While everyone is talking about weight loss drugs lately, not a lot of people are talking about the side effects. Former Buying Beverly Hills star and daughter of Kyle Richards, Sophia Umansky, recently took to TikTok to share what four months on the medication has done to her: hair loss.
It’s important—and refreshing—for influential people like Umansky to use their platforms to share their honest experiences (adverse side effects included). Remi Bader, a model and content creator, has publicly shared her experience with the weight loss drug, Mounjaro, and how it caused her to gain more weight. Keep reading to learn more about Umansky’s recent experience and what you should know before trying a GLP-1 drug.
Numbers don’t lie, and this is especially true with the increased use of GLP-1 weight loss drugs. Gen Z is leading in a new trend: Ozempic microdosing. Increasingly, Americans are taking GLP-1 medications, including weight loss and diabetes medications like Ozempic and Wegovy.
With 12 percent of Americans already having tried one of these weight loss drugs, the market has expanded well beyond its original purpose of managing Type 2 diabetes. A Morgan Stanley study estimates that 24 million people will be taking a GLP-1 by 2035. In fact, the effect has been so profound that economists have seen measurable reductions in grocery spending among GLP-1 users.
It’s important to know that Mounjaro, like other GLP-1 medications, are traditionally used to help patients with Type 2 diabetes manage their weight. When used solely for weight, it can have a number of side effects. Four months into taking Mounjaro, Umanksy noticed some unexpected results.
She took to TikTok to share her struggles: “I would say, like, maybe for the past three weeks to a month, I’ve noticed a dramatic hair loss situation. I am very lucky that I have so much hair because at the rate that I’ve been losing hair, I’m gonna be bald in about a week.”
Umansky shows a video of what her hair looks like when she brushes her hair and when she showers. “It’s even worse than what it looks like in these videos. I’m like pulling out piles of hair,” she says.
Although she’s lost more hair in the past four months than she ever has, Umansky says she doesn’t think it’s a direct result of the weight loss drug. “I think it’s a result of the rapid weight loss because of the medication and not eating enough vitamins and protein,” she says.
Similar to Umansky, Bader shared her story online about the side effects she experienced on weight loss medication. On Khloé In Wonder Land, Bader shared that after struggling with her weight for years and trying every weight loss option (from restrictive diets to overeaters’ anonymous meetings), she finally tried Ozempic. But the results were also a bust: “I was getting sick every day. It didn’t work for me. Once I went off of it, I gained even more weight,” she recalls of her experience on the GLP-1 drug.”
Ultimately, Bader ended up having bariatric surgery to cut the weight. Her advice for people is to find what works best for you: “When you say something as a content creator or as someone with a following, people listen to you. It’s a lot of responsibility. I’m sharing my journey, but I’m not here to tell anyone what to do,” she says.
For her part, Umansky says she is happy to answer any questions about her journey. She plans to continue documenting the side effects of weight loss medications, including her attempts to mitigate the hair loss by reintroducing vitamins and proteins into her diet.
