If you grew up watching WWE, you know that the Bella Twins made switching from “face” to “heel” look effortless. But on Kristin Cavallari’s Let’s Be Honest tour stop, Nikki and Brie Garcia made it clear that the off-camera story is entirely different. The live conversation—recorded in New York as Cavallari’s final bonus episode—became a breakdown of the tired “villain” narrative that often attaches to women the moment they show confidence.

Cavallari opened by admitting tabloids reduce her to one thing: sex. “With me, they always wanna just make it about sex, like, guys and sex. I’m like, I said a lot more than just that,” she says. The twins were ready to tackle the broader problem: Every strong woman gets cast into a heel (villain) storyline, whether she signs up for it or not.

Brie delivers the line that stops the room: “And the woman’s always the villain… Always.” The crowd reaction said it all—we’ve all seen those headlines. Ex-girlfriends are portrayed as clingy, mothers are labeled “difficult,” and bosses are referred to as “divas.” If you’re a woman with any visibility, fame can feel like one long villain arc you never agreed to play.

The twins call out the automatic villain edit

Nikki admits the edit can be nothing short of infuriating. “I think they make me, like, more of a villain than what I am,” she says. Cameras capture her suplexes, but not the post-match hugs, so viewers assume the on-screen heel is the off-screen human. She reminds everyone that wrestling is just entertainment. “Everyone just thought I was such a heel,” she says. That scripted swagger became a permanent label in tabloids—and even in her own divorce proceedings.

Headlines try to body-slam your reputation

Media spin doesn’t stop at clickbait; it bleeds into real life. Nikki spells it out: “People run to the media.” When breakups or legal battles occur, unnamed “sources” often weaponize gossip before facts can be verified. Cavallari confirms she’s texted publicists in panic—“never said that”—after reading phantom quotes attributed to her. Together, they expose a pipeline where rumors masquerade as reporting, and women pay the price.

Strong women, stronger misconceptions

Brie lays bare the double bind of being both tough and tender. “This is what strong women have to go through,” she says. “If we’re strong, we’re a bitch. But then if we’re meek, we’re weak.” The sisters laugh about power-bombing critics in sequins. Yet, they’re quick to note how judges and journalists alike dismiss their sensitivity because they can also bench-press a grown man. It’s a lose/lose script they refuse to follow.

Sisterhood over storylines

When the spotlight feels like a chokehold, the Bella Twins lean on each other. They joke about swapping boyfriends in sixth grade and tag-teaming life ever since, but the through-line is loyalty. “There are times when I stick up for my sister, and I’ll say something,” says Brie. ”Do take it. Send it everywhere.” If the world insists on a villain, they’ll play it together and still win.

So, how do the sisters fight back against the villain trope—and how can you do it, too?

Call out the cliché. Reject reductive storytelling the second it surfaces.

Remember the edit. Nikki’s heel persona was fiction; your worst online headline probably is, too.

Own your complexity. Brie flaunts her “sensitive soul” and her ringside grit in equal measure. You can, too.

Link arms. Whether you have a twin or a tight-knit squad, solidarity turns any forced heel turn into a crowd-pleasing face comeback.

In wrestling, a heel turn shakes up the plot. In real life, the Bella Twins show women how to shake off the label altogether. As Brie says, the villain storyline is old, and these sisters are more than ready to retire it for good.
