Jessica Capshaw and Camilla Luddington Are Back—And They’re Embracing the ‘Ish’
Jane LaCroix
After months of listeners asking where they went, Jessica Capshaw and Camilla Luddington are officially back (and is it cliché to say they’re better than ever?). Their podcast has a new name, a new home at Dear Media, and a slightly different outlook on life. Welcome to We Ride at Dawn (ish).
The “ish” turns out to be the whole point. Life looks different from what it did when the podcast first launched (formerly Call It What It Is), and both women are leaning into that. “Sometimes we have to ride at dawn. Sometimes we have to ride midday. Sometimes we gotta ride at night,” Capshaw says.
But more than anything, they’re building on the community they’ve already created. “We’ve always been on this wild ride together,” Capshaw says of their friendship, which spans more than a decade. Now they’re bringing listeners along for an even more personal ride—one that includes motherhood, friendship, career pivots, life updates, and—according to them—the kinds of conversations that usually happen over margaritas long after everyone else has gone home.
Why ‘dawn-ish’ fits this version of life
For Luddington, the “ish” started as a joke about living with Hashimoto’s hypothyroidism and not always having endless energy. Capshaw chimes in, explaining how it reflects a larger shift for her. “I think that I used to be a very black and white thinker, and I think my evolution is that I see the gray now a little bit better.”
Life rarely unfolds according to plan, and We Ride at Dawn-ish embraces that reality. The “ish” leaves room for the inevitable detours of life and those moments when showing up is enough.
Things are getting personal
People resonate with honesty, and that’s exactly what the pair intend to deliver. Capshaw opens up about preparing to send her oldest child to college, admitting she’s already anticipating the emotions that come with it. They also tease future conversations about parenting and the strange balancing act of working in Hollywood while raising families and trying to maintain some version of normal life. “I think our conversations are going to feel more intimate,” Luddington says.
The audience already knows their jokes and their chemistry. Now they’re getting into the deeper conversations too.
The pair also tease a bunch of potential guests. While they aren’t giving away too many names just yet, Capshaw and Luddington say they plan to invite people who have been part of their lives long before the podcast. Some may be familiar faces from their years on television (maybe some Grey’s Anatomy stars?), while others are simply friends who have been there through the ups, downs, and everything in between.
The community is becoming part of the show
One thing that hasn’t changed is how much Capshaw and Luddington value the people listening. The pair spent part of the episode talking about the community that formed around the podcast and introducing a new segment called Messy Mailbag, where they’ll answer listener questions and respond directly to messages from fans. “We will be reading your DMs,” Luddington says, “Also, like, tell us stuff if there’s something you’re like, please, can you guys talk about this?”
Capshaw and Luddington seem more excited than ever to hit record—and after six months of keeping secrets, they have plenty to talk about.
To hear the full conversation, listen to We Ride at Dawn (ish) wherever you get your podcasts.
