Britney Spears had everyone singing along to “Lucky” when the chart-topping record dropped in 2000. The catchy tune had us thinking that luck was something you’re just born with, and if you had it, perhaps, you’d sparkle like Spears in the iconic music video. But what if luck isn’t something you’re born with? What if it’s actually something you create?

In a recent episode, Bria Jones, host of Because I Love You, is exploring the empowering and transformative idea that we all can create our own luck and the patterns behind the people who “always seem to win.” The truth is it has nothing to do with the divine or being “chosen.” Jones wants you to nix the self-sabotage, the inconsistency, and the fear that holds you back. Trade them in for this radical mindset shift—you don’t become lucky by force or fantasy, but through a conscious decision to show up differently.

Here are a few habits of people who “always win.”

Consistency creates luck.

Give yourself a chance to succeed and do the hard work. Jones references Addison Rae, one of the top content creators on TikTok. In her early content creation days, she would post upwards of eight times a day. While every video wasn’t a success in the beginning, Jones says she understood the assignment of repetition and consistency.

According to Jones, good things don’t just always fall into people’s laps. There’s work happening behind the scenes that you don’t see. “Are you showing up enough to get lucky with those opportunities?” Jones asks. “The people who have obtained ‘lucky circumstances,’ there was a lot of work ethic behind it that has to be acknowledged.”

Lucky people perceive failures in an optimistic way.

If you want to create your own luck, then you have to shift your mindset. Don’t fixate on failures. Setbacks can actually be a form of redirection. “They have a way of perceiving obstacles and failures that is positive,” Jones explains. “You have to see a setback as a blip in the road and move on quickly.”

When you are flexible and adaptable, you attract luck.

Lucky people stay open. They are open to things working out differently than they predicted. It’s important to understand that good things can happen to you in infinite ways, and Jones says the key is to not fixate on things working out in one specific way. “Be open to the best-case scenario happening for you,” Jones says. “Move into the idea that the outcome will surprise you and that you may not even know what the best scenario is.”

Here are five habits that Jones says will open the door to more luck in your day-to-day life.

Remain flexible.

Jones encourages you to change your daily routine and shake up your habits. Say yes to new experiences. “If you do the same exact thing every day, it’s hard for luck to creep in,” she explains. “You are not being open.”

There are small things you can do to create more flexibility and attract new opportunities. For example, instead of getting your coffee through the drive-thru, you could go inside, or you could take a different route home one day. “In flexibility there is novelty,” Jones says. “When we experience something new, we are just a little more excited. Excitement attracts new things.”

Talk to more strangers.

You never know who you are going to meet or what opportunities are in proximity to people you are connected with. Jones says community is critical. “It’s really hard to do life alone,” she says. “Building a network is essential to building success and having lucky things happen to you. Be open to making new friends and to helping other people.”

Practice meditation.

Meditation and mindfulness are about embracing calm. A meditation practice looks different for everyone. “Meditation doesn’t have to look like you are a Buddha on a green hill watching the sunrise,” Jones says.

For Jones, she prefers to check in with herself and meditate during her bathtime. It’s also the only time she isn’t checking her phone. “In those moments of meditation and openness, you can recognize when there are lucky things happening around you and embrace them,” she adds.

Improve your self-worth.

According to Jones, if you think that you deserve something, you will find a way to get it. If you don’t think you are deserving, you will inevitably find a way to self-sabotage it. Work on your self-worth, and your entire world will change around you.

Jones says to simply watch what happens when you make this deliberate mental shift. “It requires a lot of work to remind yourself of your worth and go against those self-sabotage patterns,” Jones says. “Just learn how to clock it because the more honest you can be with yourself, the sooner you can fix it.”

Keep promises to yourself.

These promises can be small—such as what you’re going to eat in the morning or a daily practice to make yourself feel better. “Make a promise and keep it—this is a part of building your self-worth,” Jones says. “Keeping promises drastically builds your self-worth because it builds trust within yourself. If you cannot trust yourself, you can’t trust anyone in this world.”
