Brutally Honest Truths About Dating From Someone Who Learned Them the Hard Way
Maggie Ekberg
On Don’t Think, host Carla Bezanson records from her apartment on the day she’s moving out, reflecting on everything that happened inside those walls: a long-term relationship ending, a toxic situationship that nearly derailed her career, and eventually meeting someone who made her feel safe for the first time in years.
Whether you’re mid-situationship spiral or finally in something good and wondering why it feels weird that nothing is wrong, these might be the dating truths you need to hear right now.
Carla Bezanson Shares Brutally Honest Dating Truths on ‘Don’t Think’
Intensity is not the same thing as compatibility
“I used to think that if something felt incredibly intense, it meant it was worth exploring,” Bezanson admits. It wasn’t. The relationship that felt the most electric was also the one that wrecked her mental health, tanked her career, and left her walking on eggshells every single day. Chemistry that costs you your peace, your friendships, and your ambition isn’t chemistry. It’s just expensive.
If your nervous system isn’t calm around them, that’s your answer
The first night Bezanson spent with her current boyfriend, something clicked. “I remember feeling so calm. My nervous system was so calm. And I felt peaceful and safe. And I hadn’t felt that in so long. Not only with a man, but in general.” She slept through the night, woke up, fell back asleep, and thought: “Oh my gosh, this is what it’s supposed to feel like.”
Love shouldn’t feel like your body is bracing for impact 24/7. If you can’t relax around the person you’re dating, that’s not butterflies. That’s cortisol, babe.
Knowing it was wrong didn’t stop her from staying
“It’s not even a matter of like, how didn’t I see it? I saw it,” she says, referring to every sign that her previous relationship was toxic from the start. “But I wouldn’t listen to myself because I didn’t want to believe what I knew to be true cuz I wanted the excitement.” She chose fun over protecting herself and she owns that fully.
Sometimes the gut feeling is so loud you have to actively talk over it to stay. And that’s usually the moment you should stop talking and start packing.
Lowering your expectations isn’t the same as lowering your standards
“I didn’t lower my standards [to get a boyfriend],” Bezanson says. “I lowered my expectations because I too am imperfect.” She’s an overthinker, she’s moody, she has borderline personality disorder. She knows she’s not the easiest person to date and owning that changed everything. “Not everybody’s perfect. Nobody is perfect, actually.”
Her boyfriend isn’t flawless. But when she mentioned she loves fresh flowers and wishes he’d replace them when they die, he just started doing it. No reminder needed. “Wow, what a concept,” she quips. “I don’t think I’ve ever really been with someone before who takes that feedback and actually puts it into action.”
The willingness to actually hear you and adjust without being asked again? That’s the stuff that matters way more than checking every box on some imaginary list.
