The Universe Can’t Hear You When You’re Screaming—‘Dear Gabby’ Explains Why You’re Still Stuck
Maggie Ekberg
Roughly one in three people believe in manifestation—and among young singles, 41 percent say it’s basically the new astrology. Yet here you are, meditating, scripting, charging your crystals, doing all the things…and still feeling stuck.
On Dear Gabby, host Gabby Bernstein leans into that tension. She unpacks why all your “high vibe” effort might be blocking what you actually want and how to get back into flow. Because sometimes, the harder you try, the further you drift from the thing you want most.
The real reason your manifestations aren’t working
“The universe does not respond to pressure. It responds to presence,” Bernstein says. “So all of the doing—the doing the manifesting, the doing the meditation—can actually be another source of blocking.” When your practice turns into performance you slip into the exact energy you’re trying to escape.
Psych-wise, that tracks. Under pressure, performance often drops because attention narrows, anxiety spikes, and you start overcontrolling—classic “choking under pressure.” Studies show this effect across skills that require working memory and fluid thinking. And when you’re trying to force solutions, stepping away can help.
Bernstein learned this the hard way. When she wanted something to work out in a business situation, she took one aligned action and immediately spiraled. “Is this going to work out? I have to control it. What else do I have to do?” she says, recalling how her mind went into overdrive. Then that inner voice kicked in: “Gabby, stop doing and start allowing.” That’s the paradox. The more you try to make it happen, the more resistance you build.
What ‘allowing’ actually means
“The secret to elevating your energy is to let go,” Bernstein says. “And when you stop trying to control everything, everything begins to flow.” But letting go doesn’t mean zoning out. It’s about redirecting your energy from control to creation. “If I wasn’t spending all my time controlling this outcome, what else might I be doing?” Bernstein offers.
That question matters more than it sounds. Psychologists call it detachment—a proven way to calm the nervous system, reduce overthinking, and restore clarity. Studies show that mentally stepping back from an outcome improves problem-solving and emotional regulation. It’s the foundation of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, which teaches that presence and values-based action beat perfection every time.
And when Bernstein tells you to do the thing that brings joy, she’s basically putting you in what researchers call flow state. That’s when you’re so engaged in what you love that time disappears, and creativity, intuition, and clarity finally have room to breathe. The irony? You can’t force flow, alignment, or timing. You just create the conditions for it. Joy is the condition. Presence is the strategy. Allowing is the moment you stop chasing and start living.
The truth about manifestation nobody wants to hear
Manifestation isn’t a magic trick. It’s a practice of becoming the energetic match for what you want—and sometimes that means letting go of what you think you want so something better can find you.
“We have to make our beliefs stronger than our blocks,” Bernstein says. That’s the real work. Not the vision boards. Not the 5 a.m. meditations. The real work is the internal shift from forcing to allowing, from controlling to trusting, from desperate to magnetic. “It’s not easy to undo decades of burdened beliefs,” Bernstein admits. But here’s the thing: “The miracle is that when we do, when we make those shifts, that’s when we can heal,” she explains.
So maybe stop trying so hard. Put down the vision board, cancel the 5 a.m. alarm, and think about the things that genuinely make you feel alive—and then go do that. Paint. Dance. Call your bestie. Cook something delicious. Live your life like you’re already the person who has what they want. Because that’s the secret. You don’t manifest from lack…you manifest from wholeness.
