Denise Richards is the latest Real Housewife to face the reality TV curse after her estranged husband, Aaron Phypers, filed for divorce after six years of marriage.

Lisa Rinna names the problem plain and simple on Let’s Not Talk About The Husband when a caller wonders if The Real Housewives franchise is responsible for all the failed marriages. “I do not think the show ends people’s marriages…it can affect a relationship, but I think there are so many other aspects.”

Husband Harry Hamlin doubles down, stating, “What breaks up marriages is people not working on their relationship.” Yet,  Hamlin admits cameras “magnify issues that already exist.” That magnification lens is now aimed squarely at Rinna and Hamlin’s fellow Real Housewives of Beverly Hills alum.

Rinna and Hamlin’s reality-proof strategy offers context, not immunity

Rinna and Hamlin argue that producers only highlight existing cracks. Hamlin jokes, “If your girl gets on that show, don’t show up. Hide,” emphasizing that anything left off-camera can’t be distorted in post-production.

Their keep-it-private playbook has worked so far: no cheating scandals, no emergency reunion walk-offs, and no late-night Twitter tantrums. Still, Beverly Hills history shows that even the best strategies fail when money stress, fame fatigue, and social media converge.

The Denise Richards divorce kicks the Beverly Hills grapevine into overdrive

On July 7, Los Angeles Superior Court confirmed that Phypers filed for divorce from Richards, listing July 4 as the separation date and citing “irreconcilable differences,” per PEOPLE.

The couple, who wed in a Malibu beach ceremony in 2018 after a whirlwind engagement, share no minor children, though Phypers was in the process of adopting Richards’ youngest child, Eloise. Richards also co-parents adult daughters Sami and Lola with ex-husband Charlie Sheen.

The filing upends Richards’ own on-camera vow just four months ago that she was “never getting divorced again…even if we hate each other.” Phypers played along on Denise Richards & Her Wild Things, suggesting they would simply live in “different homes” if the marriage soured.

Inside the paperwork

Phypers’ petition lays out an elaborate financial picture for Richards. According to Page Six, he asks for spousal support and states that he earned “no income in the last 12 months” after shuttering his Malibu wellness venture, presumably to follow Richards around.

By contrast, the paperwork pegs Richards’ monthly take at more than $250,000—primarily from her top-one-percent OnlyFans account, reality TV checks, and brand deals.

The couple reportedly burns through about $105,000 every month. Here’s a breakdown of Phypers’ filing:

  • Clothing: $20,000
  • Rent: $18,000
  • Groceries and household supplies: $10,000
  • Utilities: $8,000
  • Dining out: $15,000
  • Entertainment and vacations: another $15,000

Phypers also wants a 50/50 split of their production company, Smoke & Mirrors Entertainment, and to retain personal assets, including his power tools, motorcycle, and sports car. One glaring zero appears under “savings, investments, and charitable donations,” raising eyebrows about cash flow management inside Casa Richards.

Why this split feels messier than a RHOBH finale

Several factors turn a standard celebrity breakup into Bravo-level chaos:

  • Cameras were rolling. Richards’ new series chronicled marital tiffs and on set OnlyFans shoots, giving lawyers ample B-roll for leverage.
  • Public flip-flops. Declaring “divorce is off the table” on national TV, then filing four months later, invites scrutiny.
  • Finances front and center. With Phypers spotlighting Richards’ digital platform income, court watchers are bracing for an alimony tug-of-war that could dwarf Erika Jayne and Tom Girardi’s headlines.
  • Franchise déjà-vu. Fans still recall Richards’ stormy exit from RHOBH in 2020 after Brandi Glanville affair rumors. The new split renews speculation that the “reality TV curse” finally caught up with her, despite Rinna’s insistence that shows “don’t end marriages.”

What’s next for Richards—and for the mythic reality TV curse?

Richards could fight spousal support by arguing Phypers voluntarily shuttered his lucrative practice. Phypers may counter that he stepped back to manage Richards’ OnlyFans content—an arrangement she praised as “very empowering” and “quite lucrative.” Meanwhile, Bravo sleuths will dissect every expense line as fresh episodes of Wild Things air.

As Hamlin wisely notes, “producers aren’t marriage counselors,” but more master storytellers. With divorce filings public and cameras likely rolling, viewers now hold front row seats to see whether Richards can rewrite her ending—or whether the “curse” claims another victim.

One thing is sure: the drama in divorce court already feels messier than anything the RHOBH editors could dream up.
