The Reason You Feel Off Even When Things Are Going Well, According to ‘She’s So Lucky’
Maggie Ekberg
Ever look around your life and think, technically everything’s fine…so why does my brain feel like a malfunctioning Roomba? You’re hitting goals, posting wins, checking boxes—and somehow still waking up with that low-key ache you can’t quite explain. You’re not ungrateful. You’re not dramatic. You’re human. And on She’s So Lucky, host Les Alfred is saying the quiet part out loud: your life can look amazing and still feel heavy, messy, or weirdly hollow.
Whether you’re chasing milestones or just trying to stop comparing your reality to everyone else’s highlight reel, Alfred cuts right to the root of that in-between feeling—and what actually helps you shift it.
Your life can look great and still feel terrible
Alfred says people kept pointing to her accomplishments—“you had sold out live shows and you rebranded your podcast and you had these great guests.” But the version everyone else saw wasn’t the one she was living. “Those months were the hardest months of the year for me where I was anxious and miserable trying to keep the wheels on the bus during that time,” she says.
It lands because it’s real. From the outside, everything looks like momentum. Inside, your body is firing off alarms you can’t even name. Alfred explains that the pressure of being visible stirred up stuff she thought she had already dealt with. “I was confronted with a lot of triggers personally and professionally,” she explains. “Past things that I still hadn’t healed from, insecurities that I still had, kind of just poking at me relentlessly.”
This is the part that resonates for anyone who feels overwhelmed while carrying a life that looks functional. You’re not imagining it. Emotional load doesn’t care about your résumé or your aesthetics. You can be hitting achievements and still feel stretched thin, disconnected from yourself, or strangely misaligned with the version of you everyone else thinks is thriving.
Contentment isn’t about getting the thing
After months of running on low battery, Alfred started paying attention to what genuinely shifted her state. The surprising part is that nothing external changed. She was still in the same apartment she used to side-eye. Her bank account wasn’t suddenly full. Her relationship status hadn’t budged. Her day-to-day looked exactly the same—the only real shift was how she felt living inside it.
“None of those things have actually changed,” she says. “My life is actually quite identical today that it was earlier this year when I was feeling all of that angst. But what has changed is my perspective. What has changed is my feeling of contentment and my feeling so much more secure in myself and what I have and what I bring and what my value is that what I don’t have just doesn’t bother me anymore.”
That perspective became the difference between feeling behind and feeling anchored. She stopped grading herself against timelines she never agreed to. She stopped assuming her life needed to look a certain way before she could relax. Once that pressure lifted, she finally had space to notice what was already supporting her instead of obsessing over what hadn’t arrived yet.
The real win is how you feel
So what actually moved the needle? Not a vision board. Not manifesting a specific outcome. Just consistent, low-lift daily practices that took about 15 to 20 minutes outside of her morning workout.
Her list included a ten-minute guided meditation she swaps in for the snooze button, best-case-scenario journaling, affirmations she listens to while walking, five minutes of EFT tapping, writing down three things she’s grateful for, a forgiveness practice, and mirror work.
But here’s the real reframe. “The actual manifestation, the actual prize, the actual win is feeling better,” Alfred says. “It’s not the dollar amount that you think you’re going to have or the person you think you’re going to have or the exact job that you think you’re going to have. It’s a sense of peace and contentment in feeling so solid wherever you are that whatever you do or don’t have doesn’t matter.”
She didn’t lose her ambition. She didn’t shrink her goals. She just approaches them with a different energy. Less gripping. More grounded. “It doesn’t mean that I’m not ambitious still or that I’m not still reaching for big audacious goals,” she explains. “But I do think that I have felt a shift in myself that feels less like I’m trying to grasp something.” Many of us have been sold this idea that happiness is waiting on the other side of the next achievement. But what if the point was never to arrive somewhere—but to finally feel at home where you already are?
