Manifestation has become one of those buzzy concepts that can feel both inspiring and overwhelming. You hear it everywhere—on social media, in wellness conversations, even from your most rational friend who now swears by her vision board. And yet, there’s a subtle pressure baked into it: the idea that to manifest what you want, you must always stay positive, never waver, never feel doubt, and never have a bad day.

But if you’ve ever tried to be “high vibe” while dealing with real-life stress, relationships, grief, hormones, and exhaustion, you know that forcing positivity feels fake fast. And according to Dear Gabby host Gabby Bernstein, that performative approach works against you.

Be authentic, even when your emotions aren’t at their peak

Bernstein acknowledges this common misunderstanding. Many people believe the Law of Attraction requires constant happiness—that feeling low means you’re messing up your ability to manifest. According to Bernstein, that’s not how energy works.

She explains that your emotional state is not something to be bullied or controlled. “People think they have to be happy all the time, and if they’re not feeling super high vibe, then they’re doing something wrong,” she says.

But suppressing emotions isn’t alignment—it’s avoidance. “Denying your feelings doesn’t actually raise your vibration,” Bernstein explains. “It actually buries the energy, and it festers.”

And when it festers, it eventually erupts. She shares her own recent example: “I’ve been letting some feelings fester and they came to the surface today,” she says, noting that doing that left her feeling disconnected from herself.

The real work, according to Bernstein, is allowing yourself to be where you are without judgment.

Feeling your feelings is a crucial step in the manifestation process

You cannot skip your emotional life and call it spiritual practice. Bernstein encourages listeners to treat their emotions as a built-in navigation system—what she calls the Emotional Guidance Scale.

On this scale, you’re not expected to leap from despair to joy in a single jump. That’s unrealistic and destabilizing. “Your goal isn’t to leap from despair straight into joy,” Bernstein says. “The real work is about climbing one rung at a time.”

In practical terms, going from frustration to boredom is progress. Moving from numbness to annoyance is a sign of progress. Anger, surprisingly, is progress too. “I was in a bit of despair and then I got angry,” Bernstein shares. “Anger was actually a progression from despair.”

Part of that honesty is letting yourself actually feel the more complicated emotions. “Feel the feelings all the way through to the end,” Bernstein says. Whether that means journaling, crying, venting to a safe friend, or just sitting quietly with yourself, the permission to feel is non-negotiable.

The ‘next best feeling’ approach

Once the emotional flow has been acknowledged (not repressed or rushed), it becomes possible to shift. According to Bernstein, you can ask yourself one simple question: What’s the next slightly better feeling I can reach for?

This might look like:

  • Choosing a softer thought over a self-blaming one
  • Moving your body instead of scrolling
  • Stepping away instead of spiraling
  • Letting yourself rest instead of pushing harder

And when you make those small energetic shifts, your external reality starts to shift, too. It’s a journey of progress, not perfection, and every small step is a victory.

Manifestation is about becoming

At its core, manifestation is about being real. It’s about nurturing your emotional landscape instead of policing it. It’s about recognizing your feelings as information rather than obstacles. It’s about progress, not perfection.

And when you let yourself be human—messy, feeling, evolving—your energy becomes clearer, steadier, and more magnetic.

Because the universe isn’t responding to your performance, it’s responding to your truth, which is your authentic self and your genuine feelings. When you align with your truth, the universe responds accordingly, bringing your desires into your reality.
