In what fans the world over are calling the “dream blunt rotation,” Gabby Windey joined SNL dynamo Bowen Yang and Prince of Christmas himself Matt Rogers on Las Culturistas.
(Hold for screaming, crying, and throwing up. We are ALL readers, Katies, publicists, and finalists over here.)
During the show’s signature “I Don’t Think So Honey” segment—where the guest and hosts spend one minute dragging something in pop culture that deserves it—Gabby took aim at the concept of being a “yes girl.” Guess what? When someone invites you to do something, you can refuse! “I’m not going to leave the house on a Saturday! I want an opportunity to get REM sleep,” says Gabby. “Use your critical thinking. What am I gonna do? Fly to Thailand? I’m scared I’m gonna get lost in the ocean. I have no budget. I’m staying in hostels for three weeks and jet lag.”
As Matt and Bowen point out, Shonda Rhimes made a whole self-help empire out of her book, The Year of Yes, which has somehow convinced thousands of people to agree to things they secretly hate. But Gabby, who recently took Coachella down with similar precision, says no to all of that.
“The way the self-help part of our culture has been pushed on us is awful. If you find yourself in the self-help aisle, get yourself a psychiatrist. Lamictal 200mg.” (A timely reminder that before she was on reality TV, Gabby was an ICU nurse, so she knows her stuff when it comes to prescription drugs.)
We all could stand to be a little more aggressive about saying “no” to stuff we just don’t want to do. As Gabby says, it’s time to become a “no bitch” instead. On getting asked to go to an ABBA night at Akbar, a popular gay nightclub in LA: “I like Meryl Streep. I just cannot get into the musical theater,” she says.
Look, as a theater nerd myself, that one stings. But as Gabby points out, “We have different interests and we should be able to have them! I still have to walk on eggshells, but I can’t anymore.”
We stan a relatable queen, and so do Matt and Bowen. Matt cops to “progressively becoming a no bitch as I get older,” while Bowen agrees: “The real opportunity is getting REM sleep.”
And by the way, being a “no bitch” to one request can mean being a “yes girl” for something else. As another icon, Liz Lemon, once said, “Yes to love! Yes to life! Yes to staying in more!”
