Why Forcing ‘Good Vibes Only’ Is Actually Self-Abandonment—And How That Kills Your Manifesting Power
Jane LaCroix
Gabby Bernstein has a pretty blunt message for anyone chasing “high vibes” 24/7—that “good vibes only” mindset is wrecking your spiritual life and your manifesting. On Dear Gabby, she calls the trend “one of the most dangerous traps on a spiritual path” and explains that when you shut down your so-called “negative” emotions, you’re actually shutting yourself down.
Here’s what she means.
When ‘good vibes only’ becomes self-abandonment
Bernstein’s biggest point is that “good vibes only” is a form of self-abandonment. She explains that our tough emotions are really “inner children,” and they show up as anger, fear, jealousy, or the urge to control everything. Forcing positivity tells those parts to disappear. “When we say ‘good vibes only’…we’re actually shutting down these parts, and we just tell them to go away,” she explains. And just like a kid told to calm down mid-tantrum, they don’t settle—they escalate.
Instead of helping you manifest, the pressure to be “high vibe” pushes your system into panic and keeps you disconnected from your real spiritual self. Bernstein’s fix is simple: notice the feeling, stay curious, and ask what that part needs. That’s where genuine alignment starts.
Fake affirmations, real nervous system
Bernstein calls out the habit of forcing affirmations you don’t actually believe—and why it backfires. “You’re standing in front of the mirror and you’re saying, ‘I’m abundant and wealthy,’ while a huge part of you is screaming, ‘I’m terrified and I’m broke.’” That mismatch doesn’t raise your vibration; it spikes your anxiety. Your nervous system can’t be tricked into feeling safe with words that feel untrue.
It also shows up in those automatic “I’m great!” responses when you’re actually falling apart. Bernstein says this kind of performative positivity is just another version of abandoning yourself. “You’re lying to yourself in those moments,” she explains, and the part of you that’s scared or sad ends up feeling even more ignored.
She suggests you stop jumping to the prettiest thought and reach for the truest one. Instead of pretending everything’s perfect, try a “bridge thought” you can actually land on—something like “I’m willing to see my financial situation differently.” It’s honest, it’s true.
Spiritual growth isn’t a personality trait
Bernstein shuts down the idea that being spiritual means being endlessly upbeat. “Real spiritual growth is not about being positive all the time,” she says—and honestly, it’s a relief to hear someone say it out loud.
She explains that sadness, anger, fear, and frustration aren’t signs you’ve fallen off your path. They’re part of being human, and they’re often the doorway to deeper alignment. “The times in my life where I’ve hit my biggest bottoms…were actually my greatest spiritual breakthroughs,” she says, because those were the moments she got honest instead of pretending everything was fine.
So try to show up exactly as you are—crying when you need to, praying when you’re scared, and letting yourself lean on a higher power instead of pushing through alone. Spirituality, in her framing is the willingness to be real and open.
When other people feel ‘low vibe’
Bernstein also digs into how “good vibes only” can twist into judgment, especially toward other people. Labeling someone as “low vibe” becomes an easy excuse to dismiss them, but she says that reaction is usually fear in disguise. “Judgmental boundaries actually come from a place of fear,” not empowerment.
She makes an important distinction: real boundaries protect your safety; reactive ones just protect your ego. And often, the people who annoy us most are the ones holding up the clearest mirror. “The people who trigger us the most are actually our greatest teachers.” Instead of cutting someone off instantly, Bernstein suggests pausing long enough to ask what part of you is being activated.
That curiosity puts you back in your power—and turns every relationship, even the messy ones, into an opportunity to grow instead of something to run from.
