Celebrity Trainer Harley Pasternak on GLP-1s and the Key to Long-Term Vitality, Now on ‘The Dream Bigger Podcast’
Bernadette Giacomazzo
Scroll through social media, flip through a glossy magazine, or even sit at a dinner table—chances are, someone is talking about Ozempic, Wegovy, or some other semaglutide. The promise of rapid weight loss in a weekly injection has catapulted these drugs from a little-known diabetes treatment to a cultural phenomenon.
But what happens when hype meets real life? That’s where celebrity trainer Harley Pasternak comes in. Appearing on The Dream Bigger Podcast with host Siffat Haider, Pasternak doesn’t dismiss the effectiveness of GLP-1s. Instead, he issues a much-needed reminder—the basics of health and wellness still matter whether you’re on a GLP-1 or not.
Why GLP-1s aren’t the whole story
Pasternak not only acknowledges the growing popularity of these drugs, but he also empowers the audience by shifting the focus to the bigger picture. “The popularity of strength training is greater today than I think it’s ever been,” he explains, calling it “the fountain of youth.” This emphasis on strength training gives the audience a sense of control over their health and wellness.
That comment takes on extra significance in the context of GLP-1s. These medications may slim waistlines, but they can also strip away lean muscle mass. Without resistance training, users risk ending up lighter but weaker—a tradeoff that can backfire in the long run, especially with age.
“Even with the popularity today of semaglutides and all these weight loss drugs, strength training becomes even more important for them than it’s ever been,” Pasternak says. In other words, if you’re relying on injections alone, you’re missing half the equation.
Why strength training is non-negotiable
Continuing in the vein of strength training, Pasternak draws a clear line between nutrition and fitness. Diet changes may cause the scale to drop, but only movement reshapes the body. “If someone wants to change the shape of their body dramatically, they’re going to have to resist and strain and hit their steps,” he says.
This becomes especially critical for GLP-1 users. Without regular resistance training, much of the weight lost may come from muscle instead of fat—a dangerous tradeoff, because eventually, your heart’s muscle will be stripped of its fibers. Pasternak emphasizes that maintaining lean muscle mass is key to healthy metabolism and long-term vitality.
Building habits that last
Throughout the episode, Pasternak returns to one core principle: sustainability. Crash diets and shortcuts may bring quick results, but they rarely stick. “You have to do whatever you can do for the rest of your life,” he says plainly.
That is where GLP-1s collide with reality. The drugs can suppress appetite, but they don’t teach you how to build a balanced plate, move your body regularly, or prioritize sleep. Pasternak insists those basics aren’t optional. “It also helps with recovery,” he explains. “It’s meditation, it’s mental health, physical health, and then the diet. So, the trifecta of that, plus sleep, lifestyle.”
GLP-1s might be one tool, but without the fundamentals, they won’t add up to lasting wellness.
Cutting through the noise
While the wellness industry floods consumers with gadgets, trackers, and miracle claims, Pasternak’s approach is straightforward, reminding us to zoom out and focus on sustainabilty. “We’re getting way too lost in the details,” he says. “I want to simplify it. Eat three meals a day and a snack, and follow the path, and that’s really all you need to do.”
It’s a call to stop obsessing over every glucose spike, every macro, every step count. GLP-1s may promise to handle hunger, but they don’t replace the fundamentals. Basics like balanced meals, daily movement, and rest still win out.
As always, it’s imperative to consult with a trusted, licensed physician before beginning GLP-1s or any other weight loss regimen.
