How to Make a Wedding Mood Board: Design Inspo for Every Style

We all want our wedding day to be one of the most memorable, beautiful, and everlasting moments in our lives. But here’s a secret from Real Pod: the best wedding moments happen when you stop trying to be “perfect.” (Listen to the full episode for tons of useful advice for brides!)

Life happens. Unpredictability happens. Focus on the process, not perfection. When you create a mood board, you gain a realistic sense of control. You can strategically plan out the color palette, wedding vendors, lighting styles, venue details—all the little details that make a big impact.

Suddenly, your focus shifts to “How can I make my wedding what I want it to be?” instead of “How can I plan the perfect wedding?” It’s YOUR day, and a wedding mood board reminds you of that. SO! Let’s start by talking about what a wedding mood board is, and then we’ll dive into the creation process.

What Is a Wedding Mood Board?

A wedding mood board is a collection of images, colors, and textures that display the overall aesthetic of a wedding. And you can create your wedding mood board however you’d like, from Pinterest boards and Canva collages to magazine clippings and corkboards.

Regardless of what platform you choose, these are a few things you’ll include in your wedding mood board:

  • Color Palette: 3–5 core colors that you want your wedding design to center around
  • Florals: The flowers you want in bouquets, entrance areas, altars, aisles, backdrops, flower girl crowns, and groom/groomsmen boutonnieres (More on this in the DITL episode with Sofia Richie Grainge’s florist, Dani Page!)
  • Decor: Any centerpieces, meaningful pictures, table settings, and lighting design choices you prefer
  • Guest Attire: Black tie? White tie? Cocktail and semi-formal? Dressy casual? Festive themed? Set expectations for guest formality
  • Textures: All textures you want to see around the venue, in the place settings, and throughout the decor
  • Photo Inspo: The vibe, aesthetic, or feel you want your wedding photos to look like

If you’re using a Pinterest board template, just save a bunch of wedding inspiration to your board. If you’re using the classic magazine-and-corkboard method, pin up pictures, color swatches, and fabrics as you come across them. Then share your board with your planner, photographer, florist, and venue stylist so they can get a sense of your vibe.

Note to Self touches on something SUPER important: wedding rules are dead. Don’t feel like you have to stick to traditions that just aren’t you. This is a day for you and your significant other. YOU make the rules—your mood board is here to follow them.

Should You Create a Wedding Mood Board?

You ABSOLUTELY should create a wedding mood board. Not only is it fun to see your wedding visions come to life, but it’s also incredibly helpful. You get to define your atmosphere, vibe, and aesthetic before booking vendors and making any final decisions. And the best part? You can change things as you go.

Listened to makeup artist Hung Vanngo discuss wedding glam on Breaking Beauty, and want to change your “day of” look? Perfect, just save new inspo pics. Tuned into The Bossticks episode with Marcy Blum, the world’s top planner, as she shared secrets to flawless weddings? Just switch up the pictures of the design elements you want!

Wedding mood boards make it SO easy to gather inspiration, refine your palette, and guarantee everything is cohesive. Plus, there’s seriously no better way to reference your preferences with vendors and planners. No guessing, no miscommunication, just clear mood boards that literally lay everything out for you.

Select a Board Template to Organize Ideas

Before you start planning anything, decide which template you want to use. And, word of advice, you don’t have to be super tech-savvy to use Pinterest boards or Canva. So, it all comes down to what’s easiest—and most convenient—for your process!

If you decide to make your wedding mood board on Pinterest, simply create a new board and title it. You can even invite your friends or significant other to the board to help out! If you choose to use clippings, swatches, and physical ideas, grab yourself a corkboard and get to work. Or, have a little fun and use both! Your wedding planning process, your rules.

Choose a Color Palette

Color. Palettes. Are. Everything. After all, they’re what your ENTIRE wedding will be centered around! And we know, it sounds super overwhelming. But honestly, figuring things out without a wedding mood board is the hardest part.

Pick 3–5 colors to serve as the “backdrop” for the celebration. Soft pastels create romance; bright, bold colors add energy. Now, incorporate these hues into things like dresses, florals, and decor arrangements. You can ALWAYS add pops of color later.

And if it’s any resolution, you’re not the only one navigating stress. Just listen to “What Really Happens in Paradise with Hannah Brown” from Gals on the Go. This Bachelor and Bachelorette star talks all things wedding planning—and it’s so relatable.

Pull Photos That Reflect Your Vibe

It’s so easy to get lost in the process, especially when you’re on the fence about your theme and style. However, as THIS episode with Jaz Smith from She’s So Lucky discusses, wedding planning should be on your terms. If you wanna mix and match aesthetics? Go for it!

You can always weed things out later. However, don’t just add pins to your board or clippings to your corkboard because they look pretty. Then you’re just dealing with clutter and confusion. Pick things that reflect your vibe, even if they don’t “traditionally” go together.

Define Your Overall Aesthetic

Now’s where things get a little more “structured.” You like the feel of modern minimalism, but you also like vintage-inspired decor. This, darling, is what we call “Modern Heirloom.” You can blend literally any style; you just have to make them cohesive.

So, on that note, define your aesthetic! Do you want bold pops of color? An architecturally STUNNING venue? Beachside ceremony with a nightclub-inspired reception? Think about how you want everything to look, what design elements you want to pop, and make it yours.

Still feeling iffy? Listen to “Monica Ravichandran on Wedding Planning Hot Takes” for an honest conversation about the unconventionality of labeling wedding planning.

Layer in Pre-Wedding Details

Planning the wedding is when you should think about all the little things—not on the days leading up to it. Trust us, it may be stressful now, but you’ll thank yourself later. Think about things like pre-wedding beauty routines, which Bryony from Beyond the Mat talked about in “The Ultimate Wedding Edition.”

Or listen to “Wedding Prep: Skin, Hair + Workouts, Overcoming Self Doubt & My Approach to Alcohol” from The Wellness Process to start thinking about hair and makeup looks you want for the big day. Basically, more work now equals less stress later. And when you just have to add in a few pictures to describe your ideal look? It’s seriously so much easier.

Wedding Mood Board Examples

Wedding Mood Board Examples

Romantic Neutral Wedding Mood Board

Romantic neutral weddings really lean into soft hues, organic textures, warm lighting, and simple details. Think: candles lining altars, taupes and creams layered on tables, and monochromatic florals where it matters. It’s perfect for couples who want that “fairytale” feel without making it bland and boring.

Modern Minimalist Wedding Mood Board

Modern minimalist weddings kind of give off the same vibe as romantic neutral themes. Instead, they prioritize high-impact decor a little more. AKA, less is more. The mood boards will reflect simple arches, single-stem florals, clean lines, and muted accents. This theme emphasizes intentionality and timelessness.

Vintage-Inspired Wedding Mood Board

Vintage-inspired weddings are totally nostalgic, emphasizing era-specific details and curated aesthetics. And the fun part? “Vintage” doesn’t refer to one specific style. Fill your board with 1920s inspo using feathers and champagne towers. Or lean into 1940s Old Hollywood with black-and-white palettes and velvet gowns. It’s timeless, romantic, and unarguably unique.

Coastal Chic Wedding Mood Board

Seaside charm, beachfront ceremonies, soft white and blue accents—does any of this sound up your alley? This is what coastal chic weddings are all about. They highlight natural elements, romantic florals, airy decor, and scenic venues. It’s perfect for the bride who wants the environment to be just as whimsical as the day itself.

Speaking of this theme, listen to “Will Raw Milk Kill You?!” from Good Guys to hear Josh and Ben talk about coastal-inspired wedding menus. It’s a dose of inspo you didn’t know you needed!

Garden Party Wedding Mood Board

Garden party weddings are heavy on florals, string lights, and rustic charm to create a whimsical, enchanted vibe. It feels romantic, it looks intimate, and it’s the perfect way to celebrate love in a relaxed, personalized atmosphere. Plus, who needs to spend a fortune on decor when the natural greenery is already so picturesque?

Weddings are naturally stressful. Guest lists, venue choices, cake flavors, oh my! However, this is one of the most beautiful, special celebrations of your life. Take your time to enjoy it.
