True wellness isn’t about looking perfect on the outside—it’s about feeling balanced and vibrant from within. Reiki master Jo Placencio has spent decades mastering this philosophy, and her approach to energetic healing offers valuable insights for women navigating the complexities of modern life.
Placencio, now 65, has been practicing meditation since she was 26 years old and has had her wellness tips and Reiki work featured in People magazine.
Gracie Norton, host of Wellness Her Way, sits down with Placencio to discuss energy blocks, hormonal changes, wellness, and feminine energy. And if you’re feeling stuck, Placencio has some wisdom to help get you through: “If you’re curious, just go do it. Say yes to everything, and have fun. You are going to make mistakes. You get one life, and you are not going to be perfect. Just do your best.”
Stop and ask yourself, “How are you feeling?” Like really feeling? Regular check-ins help you tune in with your emotions and assess any blocked energy. According to Placencio, everyone has blocked energy or feelings, and trauma and illnesses are common causes.
Placencio explains that humans have seven chakras that can get stuck with energy. Just like an individual may get a massage to move lactic acid or for lymphatic drainage, you need to do the same for your energy. That’s where a Reiki master can help. They touch or place their hands above your body to clear the stuck energy. The Japanese technique has been used for more than a century for stress reduction, relaxation, and spiritual healing.
“It’s like getting the biggest hug. You literally feel like you had a massage for your chakras and your body. It’s like soul food for your soul,” Placencio says.
For women who are in menopause and experiencing hormonal changes, Placencio encourages to show yourself so much grace. “It’s normal. You will feel like you are crazy,” she explains about the memory loss and body changes that come with aging.
Placencio is also a big supporter of hormone replacement therapy, which she started after she did blood work and learned that her levels of progesterone and estrogen had started to decrease. “It’s really helped me. I don’t have brain frog. I’ve never had a hot flash,” she attests.
For the younger ladies, it is important to know that hormones start to dip in the 30s. Placencio suggests that women, starting in their 30s, connect with a functional medicine doctor to test their blood levels.
“Check your blood levels and your hormones. Be open. Find a doctor who is willing to heal from within and find the root of the problem. You’ll be so happy and healthy,” Placencio encourages.
In our fast paced environment, we are constantly living in masculine energy. As a divorcée and a business woman, Placencio says she is often surrounded by that energy as well. But too much of that, she says, can lead to blocked energy. When Placencio comes home, every day, she has a dedicated practice of turning off the masculine energy and leaning into her feminine.
“I start doing all the soft things and put on the prettiest pajamas. I do my skin care in a really soft and intentional way, take a hot bath, and focus on what makes me feel pretty and soft. It’s the thing that helps me flow through life,” Placencio reveals.
