Jenny McCarthy is sharing her unfiltered thoughts about women’s health, specifically regarding perimenopause, self-healing, and autoimmune struggles. She joins The Skinny Confidential Him & Her Podcast, hosted by Michael Bosstick and Lauryn Evarts Bosstick, to discuss why prepping before perimenopause hits is important.

Her decades-spanning career—from her breakout days on MTV’s Singled Out to her bestselling books, TV gigs, and advocacy work—dwarfs in comparison to what really matters to her now: health, hormones, and healing. McCarthy knows that these topics can feel taboo or even overwhelming, but her approach is refreshingly direct. She emphasizes the power of early self-care and prevention, stating, “If you don’t fix yourself in the beginning of perimenopause, you are going to suffer when menopause and post-menopause happen.”

Why Jenny McCarthy is talking openly about perimenopause

McCarthy shares that her wellness journey started as a necessity. After working for years to help her son navigate his autism, she began noticing her own health declining as she entered her 40s. She describes feeling run-down and plagued with new diagnoses. “I had hypothyroidism, I had leaky gut, Candida. I mean, I can keep going. There are so many more that I can’t even name right now. But I started getting all these diagnoses and I started to feel like shit,” she recalls.

That wake-up call forced her to shift focus. “I got to put the oxygen mask on myself now,” she says, highlighting how women often push their own health to the back burner until their bodies demand otherwise.

What happens to your body in midlife

McCarthy doesn’t shy away from the less-glamorous realities of perimenopause, noting that her biggest qualm was about everything “drying out.”

“Your vagina dries out as you get older, as you go through perimenopause and menopause. But then your saliva also dries out, causing your gums to recede. That’s why women they’re noticing more like root canal infections or teeth falling out,” McCarthy states. It’s not exactly cocktail party chatter—but that’s the point. By talking about these symptoms out loud, McCarthy gives permission for women to be honest about what they’re going through.

The role of genetics and prevention

McCarthy also dives into the science she’s learned over the years, especially about the MTHFR gene mutation, which impacts how the body detoxes. She explains why this matters for women navigating hormonal shifts. “Because we have a methylation issue, we can’t detox properly,” she says, noting that the “secret sauce” for that is “glutathione.”

She also notes that she and her son get weekly glutathione infusions due to this MTHFR mutation, which she believes she has. McCarthy believes honesty with oneself is the best tool women have. “If you don’t fix [your problems], you will start to fall apart and your teeth will start falling out of your body,” she warns, underscoring the urgency of paying attention early.

For McCarthy, the message is prevention, empowerment, and keeping it real. She’s sharing what has worked for her and encouraging others to start asking questions about their own health. By tackling the subjects most women whisper about (if they talk about them at all), she opens the door for more honest, helpful conversations around women’s wellness.
