Khloé Kardashian Gets Real About Taking Care of Tristan Thompson’s Brother Amari

That’s a wrap on the debut season of Khloé in Wonderland—and what a season it’s been. From expert guests like psychiatrist Dr. Daniel G. Amen to renowned ufologist Dr. Steven Greer to members of the Kardashian empire like Kris Jenner and Kourtney Kardashian, Khloé Kardashian has accomplished exactly what she set out to do—create a space of interesting people and conversations that she’s passionate about. 

“When I think about it, I can’t believe the people I’ve had on the podcast, like the caliber of people,” Kardashian says. “All of these people have sparked my interests in so many ways—I really feel so lucky.”

To close out this first season of Khloé in Wonder Land, Kardashian is diving into a few listener questions, holding nothing back as she gets vulnerable about her cancer scare, being a single mom, and what integrating dating and family life looks like in practice. She also dives into that slightly awkward and very emotional scene in season six of The Kardashians where she reunites with ex-husband Lamar Odom—their first meeting since Odom’s near-fatal overdose in Las Vegas in May 2016.

Ari Thompson Is a Special Part of the Kardashian Clan, Khloé Says

Khloé on her cancer scare and raising awareness about skin health

Kardashian is passionate about raising awareness for skin cancer. Her first bout with the disease was when she was 19 years old, the same year her dad died from esophageal cancer. “Months after my dad died, I found out I had skin cancer on my back, and I didn’t tell my family,” she explains. “I didn’t want to scare them. So I literally drove myself to the doctor, got the skin removed, and didn’t think much about it.”

Shortly after, Kardashian had a pimple on her face that would not go away. She was convinced it was cystic acne, and after a year of messing with it and getting facials, she finally decided to get a biopsy. “Within days, they found out it was melanoma,” she recalls. “Because it was on my face, they had to remove the tumor, and they also had to remove enough healthy skin to ensure the cancer cells didn’t spread.”

The type of melanoma Kardashian had was rare and is typically only found in really young kids or older people. The scary experience taught her the power of being proactive. “If anyone has any concerns about their skin, go to a dermatologist and get it checked,” she says. “It will save your life. Mine could have been so much worse, but it wasn’t because I was proactive.”

The emotional reunion with Lamar Odom

After seeing Odom on the first episode of season six of The Kardashians, the youngest Kardashian sister admits that it was emotionally draining. After all, she hasn’t seen her ex in nearly 10 years, and they were filming for a little more than four hours. “So not seeing someone for 10 years is crazy, but also being on camera, which he knew about, was definitely an out-of-body experience,” she says. 

Kardashian admits that she felt extremely triggered by Odom. He showed up late to the meeting that he chose the time for, and he was also very sweaty—both of which, according to Kardashian, were previous indicators during their marriage that he was under the influence. “I automatically went into protection mode, and I needed to protect myself,” she says. “I sort of blacked out, and I was on autopilot.” 

Tristan’s brother Amari holds a special place in her heart

Amari Thompson is the younger brother of NBA player Tristan Thompson. As Thompson’s ex, Kardashian had gotten to know Amari for almost a decade and has created a special bond with him. Amari has Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS), a severe form of childhood epilepsy, and he is unable to walk or talk. 

After Amari and Tristan’s mom, Andrea Thompson, passed away a few years ago, Amari came to live with Kardashian in the U.S. Previously, Amari and his mom, who was his primary caregiver, lived in Canada. Amari lives in Los Angeles with Kardashian, something she says she is happy to do. “Tristan is in the NBA, and he is in a different state every few days, which is just not conducive for Amari,” she explains. “I have chosen to take care of Amari and be there for him because it’s not good that he travels.” 

Kardashian also has two caretakers for Amari: Noelle and Elba. “I love having Amari be a part of my family,” she says. “We just want to provide Amari with the best, most beautiful life we know how.”

Secret dating and family integration

Kardashian says integrating men and new relationships into her family dynamic isn’t all that seamless. “I don’t know how seamless it is, but it is probably quite intimidating,” she laughs. “There are so many of us, and we definitely move like a pack of wolves.” 

Anyone who gets to join Kardashian’s family, as she says, is lucky because there’s so much love. She admits that if you date one of the Kardashian-Jenner family, you date them all. “We like to be around each other all the time, so everyone has to mesh,” she explains. “If you don’t mesh with my family, it probably won’t work out.” 

Dealing with loneliness as a single mom

As for dealing with loneliness as a single mom, Kardashian says that hasn’t been her experience. “I don’t feel a ton of loneliness because I am surrounded by so much love and I’m doing so many things that make my soul happy,” she explains. “Right now, a man isn’t going to fill a void because I don’t have a void; I think that person would just add to my life and enrich my life.”

Kardashian admits that while she sometimes wishes she had someone to do things with, she doesn’t feel less than because she is a single mom. “The more that I work on myself, the more comfortable I get in my skin and the more things I do that bring me joy,” she says. “I think that I just have a really full, amazing life, and I don’t feel lonely in that regard.”
