Kristin Cavallari Gets Real on Dating Rules, Red Flags, and Getting Too Excited Too Fast
Bernadette Giacomazzo
Dating in your 30s and 40s is its own special kind of chaos. And if anyone is going to call it exactly like it is, it’s Let’s Be Honest host Kristin Cavallari. This time around, she brings her longtime best friend Justin Anderson back to play Sip or Spill, talk about why dating can feel like a sport, and break down the patterns she’s finally ready to outgrow.
Why dating makes Cavallari excited
Cavallari asks Anderson directly, “What do you think I need to change when it comes to dating? What am I doing wrong? What am I doing wrong?” Without missing a beat, Anderson says, “I think that you’re actually really good at dating.” He continued: “I always get nervous when I see people who will date and they’re not themselves or they put on a show. You are the queen of being authentic. So you show up exactly how you are. So no, I think the guys need to change.”
To him, the pattern isn’t about her being “too much”—it’s that the men she’s dating aren’t meeting her at the level she naturally shows up.
He even admits they’ve bumped heads about it. “We got in a little bit of a fight about it because I think, like, you’re so perfect,” he says. “I think the whole world would fall in love with you. I think people need to step up. Some of the people that you’ve been on dates with and stuff.”
Know when to go all in—and when to pull back
A throughline is Cavallari’s honesty about her emotional patterns. She knows she’s someone who genuinely enjoys the early spark—the conversation, the butterflies, the anticipation.
“You and I love, love so much,” Anderson remarks. “And we love having a crush, and we love the excitement of meeting someone that you’re excited about. And I think that at this point in our life, you get to a point where…you have to pull that back a bit because they take that as, ‘this woman wants to marry me tomorrow.’”
Men often don’t know how to handle a woman who is fully present. “Now, I’m trying really hard to make a conscious effort to pull back a little, even when I’m excited, because I think I get so excited because it doesn’t happen that often. So then when it does, I’m like, I can’t wait. But then all of a sudden, I wake up and I’m like, I’m over them.”
She goes deeper later in the episode when she says, “I’m trying really hard now to, like, just pull back a little, because I know my pattern, and it’s really exciting, and then a 180, and I’m over you. But what’s funny, too, is that people could be like, ‘Oh, so does Kristin love-bomb people?’ No.”
She’s not pretending she doesn’t have strong reactions—she’s explaining why they happen.
Why the ‘rules’ might not matter as much as the energy
While Cavallari tries to be more aware of her patterns, she also makes it clear she simply likes connection. “It’s fun and I enjoy talking to men. Like, I just do. I like men, you know?” she says. “And so, yeah, they take it. But by the way, there’s been a lot of people where I’m like, ‘hey, heads up. This will never work. We’re just friends.’”
To win at dating, it’s about naming the patterns, laughing at them a little, and deciding which ones get to stay. Cavallari knows who she is—and as Anderson reminds her, that’s the best possible place to start. If dating is going to work, the right men simply have to meet her there.
