Kristin Cavallari’s 20 Most Important Life Lessons for Her Kids (And Honestly, the Rest of Us Too)
Jane LaCroix
There’s something different about the advice you give when you’ve actually lived through the mess of it. When you’ve ignored your gut and paid for it. When you’ve tried to please everyone and slowly lost yourself. When you’ve gripped the wheel so tightly, life had to pry your fingers off one by one.
Kristin Cavallari isn’t offering polished platitudes in her recent episode of Let’s Be Honest—she’s pulling from the seasons that reshaped her. Divorce. Public criticism. Reinvention. Growth she didn’t ask for but ultimately needed. If she could hand her kids a small stack of truths to carry into adulthood, these are the ones she says matter most.
1. Trust your gut—always
Cavallari calls it the one thing she’d equip her kids with above everything else: “We are our own best compass.”
Learning to trust your intuition takes trial and error—but once you see it’s rarely wrong, you build real trust with yourself.
2. You will never please everyone—so live for you
“No matter what you do…you will not please everyone.”
So if disapproval is inevitable, you might as well choose what makes you happy instead of managing everyone else’s expectations.
3. Protect authenticity like it’s your superpower
“The highest vibration is authenticity.”
When you stop bending for approval, you stop losing pieces of yourself. Yes, it might trigger people—but she’s clear: that’s not your job to fix.
4. Other people’s opinions have nothing to do with you
“Other people’s opinions of you have nothing to do with you. Nothing, nothing, nothing.”
Someone else’s projections are about their beliefs, their insecurities, their lens—not your truth.
5. Don’t take things personally
“We have no idea what someone is going through.”
From rude strangers to online criticism, assuming people are fighting unseen battles makes it easier not to absorb their behavior.
6. Words only have power if you believe them
“Words can only carry power and weight if you believe them.”
Criticism only sticks when it hits a doubt you already have. Be rooted in who you are, and it rolls off.
7. Everything is energy—what you feed grows
“Where attention goes, energy grows.”
Obsess over what you hate, and it expands. Shift your focus to what you want instead.
8. Don’t live in fear
“Fear is such a wasted emotion.”
She believes focusing on what you don’t want just fuels it. Instead, put your energy toward what lights you up.
9. Be careful with your words
“We have to be really careful what we’re thinking and feeling and saying out loud.”
Cavallari’s belief: what you repeatedly speak becomes the reality you live in.
10. Question everything
“Just because an authority figure says it doesn’t mean it’s true.”
She wants her kids to build their own belief systems—not inherit one blindly.
11. Never compare yourself
“Comparison is the thief of joy.”
The only competition that matters? You versus who you were yesterday.
12. If you’re going to do it, give it 110%
“If you’re gonna do something, give it 100%, otherwise, don’t even do it.”
Work ethic matters. Effort gets noticed. Follow-through builds trust.
13. Time heals—be patient
“In the midst of it…you think you’re never going to be OK…and then you wake up one day and you are.”
Breakups, grief, heartbreak—she’s lived it. It doesn’t disappear overnight, but it softens.
14. Life is the long game—let it surprise you
“Life has a funny way of always taking care of things.”
Have goals, yes—but loosen the grip. Control isn’t always strength.
15. Learn to love the hard times
“There is beauty in pain.”
She admits she used to avoid feeling anything. Real growth happened when she chose to sit in it instead of running.
16. Take responsibility for your life
“What have I done to contribute to this?”
Ownership isn’t self-blame—it’s power. When you see your role, you can change the outcome.
17. Character matters more than talent
“Character is what’s going to get you in the room.”
Kindness, integrity, and doing what you say you’ll do matter more long-term than skill alone.
18. Mistakes are part of it—just get back up
“The most important thing is getting back up.”
Failure isn’t the problem. Staying down is.
19. Chase fulfillment, not achievements
“When I’m dying…I’m not going to be like, thank God I had a New York Times bestseller.”
What matters is whether you had fun, showed up for people, and lived a life you actually liked.
20. Know your worth
“You are valuable. You bring something special into this world.”
When you know that, boundaries become easier. So does walking away.
