Kristin Cavallari Revisits Speidi’s Big Day on ‘Let’s Be Honest’—and How Time Proved Everyone Wrong About the Couple
Bernadette Giacomazzo
Kristin Cavallari’s Let’s Be Honest revisits one of the most dramatic moments in MTV history: Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt’s wedding—and the birth of the infamous portmanteau Speidi—on The Hills. The revisit of one of reality TV’s groundbreaking super-couples comes hot on the heels of the upcoming Laguna Beach 20-year reunion, set for release on Roku next year.
For younger Gen Xers and elder millennials, this week’s flashback on Let’s Be Honest serves as a time capsule to a simpler time. Cavallari revisits Season 5, Episode 10 of the show, where the tension was sky-high, Lauren Conrad was about to walk away from the show for good, and Speidi was sealing their union with all the drama the producers could dream up.
In hindsight, Cavallari can’t help but laugh—not just at the staged moments, but at how the couple everyone doubted is still going strong nearly two decades later. Considering that Spencer Pratt is currently in the headlines for battling the City of Los Angeles over the wildfire that destroyed the couple’s $2.5 million Pacific Palisades home, the rewatch makes clear just how far they’ve come, from tabloid villains to a married duo raising two kids while weathering both media storms and literal ones.
The marriage everyone thought wouldn’t last
As Cavallari explains, she went into her Hills rewatch with no memory of what went down. “I felt like I was a viewer watching it for the first time, and I had no idea what was gonna happen,” she admits.
Watching the cast throw shade at Heidi and Spencer’s relationship years ago now feels ironic. Cavallari recalls how “Lauren made a joke about how she’ll be at Heidi’s next wedding because like, ‘Obviously this one’s not gonna last.’” Even Brody Jenner—Kylie and Kendall Jenner’s half-brother—chimed in with doubts, telling Lauren he thought they were “rushing into things.”
But Cavallari points out how wrong everyone was. “Isn’t it so funny, you guys? All these years later, they’re still together,” she wistfully says. “They’re gonna be coming up on their 20th anniversary here pretty soon.”
How the producers staged the drama
Part of the fun of Cavallari’s rewatch is hearing just how much of The Hills was manufactured TV magic. She breaks down how cast members were “held” outside events to fake late arrivals and how “pickup scenes” were filmed afterward to make storylines work.
Take Heidi’s sister Holly, for example. Cavallari reveals, “My guess is Holly wasn’t in fact late, they did that on purpose. We need the drama, we need the stakes—we need all this drama leading up to Heidi’s wedding.”
And when it came to Cavallari’s own surprise entrance at the ceremony, production made sure it played out exactly the way they wanted. “They also told everybody where to sit in the church. They want you to cross in front of Justin Bobby and sit right smack dab in the middle,” she says, laughing at the absurdity.
A real love story behind the cameras
What strikes Cavallari most now isn’t the drama, but how authentic Heidi and Spencer’s commitment really was. “Joke’s on everybody else because Heidi and Spencer are still together and they’re thriving and they’re killing it and they’re still in love,” she says. She even notes the shift in Spencer himself during those episodes. In one scene, he talks about going to therapy and wanting to be a better partner. At the time, the cast rolled their eyes. Today, it’s clear he meant it.
And if you scroll his Instagram now, that hasn’t changed. He gushes about his wife like he’s still the nerd who married the cheer captain, posting about her music, her projects, and their boys with all the devotion of a full-fledged stan.
After the Palisades fire, he told Good Morning America through tears about watching his children’s bedrooms burn on camera, remembering, “Our son’s bed started just burning in the shape of a heart. The fire started in the shape of a heart. I was like, ‘This is like, out of body insane.’” Who would have thought that reality TV’s first-ever bad boy would be comfortable showing his emotions on breakfast television?
Where Speidi is today
From MTV drama to married-with-kids life, Speidi has stayed center stage. They married in 2009, welcomed Gunner in 2017 and Ryker in 2022, and even while rebuilding from the fire, they’re still developing new projects. Montag recently described their younger son as “such a blessing…you can tell he’s just a really calm, relaxed baby.”
Meanwhile, Pratt has doubled down on family first. After Gunner was born, he said, “It’s the best thing that ever happened to me…I think I finally found my calling…everything now is about looking toward the future and making it good for him.”
It’s a far cry from the “villain edit” that made him infamous. The couple, once painted as reality TV’s biggest mistake, has become one of its longest-lasting love stories.
Why the Let’s Be Honest rewatch hits different
Cavallari doesn’t hold back in her commentary, even laughing at her own over-the-top entrance. “Could you imagine in real life if you are late going into any sort of social function and you have to sit down, you would never go up to just two guys that you don’t know and sit in the middle of them,” she says.
But for all the laughs, her biggest takeaway is clear: the wedding that was treated as a punchline on The Hills turned into proof of an enduring partnership. Speidi may have been reality TV’s favorite controversy, but as Cavallari reminds listeners, time told the truth—and the truth is, they’re still here, still married, and still very much in love.
