Kristin Cavallari Breaks Down How ‘The Hills’ Was Really Made on ‘Let’s Be Honest’
Bernadette Giacomazzo
If you grew up glued to MTV in the mid-2000s, then you certainly remember The Hills as the pinnacle of reality TV drama. But as Kristin Cavallari reveals on Let’s Be Honest, not everything you saw on screen was exactly the way it happened.
In her latest rewatch episode, Cavallari revisits “It’s On, Bitch,” her explosive entry into The Hills universe. Not only is she rehashing the drama, she’s explaining how much of what fans saw was crafted behind the scenes by producers.
The Hills was more scripted than it looked
When Cavallari joined The Hills, MTV was carefully producing her everyday life. She reveals that the lavish Malibu house viewers saw her walking out of wasn’t hers. “MTV got me this sick ass house in Malibu for the summer,” she explains. “It was right on the beach, worth maybe $30 or $40 million. But I only stayed there a few nights because we could only be there when we were filming.”
Even something as simple as driving to an event wasn’t necessarily real. Those sweeping helicopter shots of Cavallari heading to the London Hotel? Shot on a different day entirely. “That was a separate filming day just to get coverage of me driving. It wasn’t me actually going to the party,” she says. The carefully edited footage helped producers build the image of Cavallari as the late, dramatic entrance—whether it was true or not.
The manufactured villain narrative
Perhaps the most eye-opening part of Cavallari’s recap is how producers shaped her storyline from the moment she arrived. “They always want to make it seem like I’m the last one to show up, like I’m this big troublemaker. And then they laid the groundwork that I was going to swoop up everybody’s boyfriends,” she recalls.
Spencer Pratt even called her “the real deal female player,” a label Cavallari says she took as a backhanded compliment. Off camera, though, her friendships with people like Audrina Patridge were much less combative than fans were led to believe. “Audrina and I had hung out before. We had mutual friends. Producers definitely pushed for us to be rivals,” she says.
The infamous London Hotel party
Of course, no rewatch would be complete without revisiting the London Hotel blowup. Cavallari remembers walking into the party, saying a casual hello to Justin Bobby, and suddenly finding herself in the middle of an all-out feud. “If Justin and I were flirting, they would have aired it. It was a simple hi. But then all of a sudden, I was being attacked like I had done something horrible,” she says.
Fueled by tequila and surrounded by cameras, tensions escalated. Cavallari laughs now about her quick-witted line comparing the other girls to “piranhas,” but at the time she felt ganged up on for no reason. “I stood my ground because I had literally done nothing wrong,” she says. What viewers saw as juicy drama was, in her words, more about producers pushing the narrative than real betrayal among friends.
Then versus now
Rewatching her younger self has also given Cavallari perspective. Just 21 years old when she filmed these episodes, she admits her fiery energy made great TV, but it’s not how she’d react today. “I’m really happy I worked through my shit,” she says. “I would never behave like that now, but at the time it made a great show.”
So why do viewers still care about the behind-the-scenes details of a show that aired more than a decade ago? Maybe it’s because The Hills was one of the first reality shows that blurred truth and performance so seamlessly. But Cavallari reminds us that even though we knew it wasn’t 100 percent real, we still got hooked—and we still quote lines like “It’s on, bitch” all these years later.
