Kenzie Annis Played ‘Love Island USA’ Like the Men and Somehow Became the Problem
Maggie Ekberg
Love Island USA is supposed to reward keeping your options open, testing connections, and hoping America doesn’t punish you for taking the assignment too literally. Season 8 made one thing pretty clear, though: Not everyone gets the same amount of room to move.
On What We Said, hosts Jaci Marie and Chelsey Jade look past the winning couple and zero in on the double standard that followed the Islanders all summer. Men explored because that’s what men apparently do. Women did it and suddenly everyone had assembled a case file.
Few contestants made that contrast easier to see than Kenzie Annis and Sincere Rhea.
The ‘Love Island USA’ Double Standard That Defined Season 8
Kenzie did what the show asked her to do
Kenzie had several connections during the season, but not all of them came from her bouncing between men. Zach Georgiou chose Kayda Bosse, America paired the “Split Queen” with Caleb McDaniel and she cut Corbin Mims off once she felt disrespected. Her decision to explore Dylan Wrona and Gal Tshnieder was the first time she independently pursued two men at once.
That was still enough to turn her into one of the season’s favorite defendants.
“When a woman is getting absolutely obliterated online and you kind of look at their crime and realize the punishment is not meeting the crime, then naturally I’m like, ‘Okay, well now I have to defend her,'” Chelsey says. The deeper she looked, the less criminal Kenzie’s behavior seemed. “She did not do anything wrong. Her cut-off game is so clean—it’s inspirational.”
Sincere’s situation was harder to defend. After telling the men that he and Melanie Moreno had “done some stuff” in the Hideaway, he turned around and assured her that he only said they talked and went to sleep. When she reminded him that cameras were everywhere, Sincere insisted, “I’m not a liar.”
By Movie Night, his lies had been stacked into a chronological montage that left the villa silent. Still, the Islanders appeared to give him more time to explain, apologize, and promise he had changed. Kenzie’s decisions, meanwhile, kept getting dragged back into conversation as proof that she couldn’t be trusted. “Usually girls just kind of expect that from guys like, ‘Oh he’s just a guy,’” Chelsey says. “But then when a girl did it, it was like, ‘Oh my gosh, how dare she move on.’”
Even their friends were grading on a curve
The Islanders ran the same math. Dylan’s side pushed him to question every move Kenzie made, and she felt each round of it. Melanie’s circle went the other way, nudging her toward one more chance. Parmida Keshani and Corbin told her she deserved better, and both were voted out not long after.
“Even Dylan’s friends were being more real with him about Kenzie than Melanie’s friends were,” Chelsey points out. “They were being almost harder on Kenzie about how she was exploring than Melanie’s friends were on Sincere for him exploring.”
America returned its own verdict
The season ended July 12 with Trinity Tatum and Bryce Dettloff winning the $100,000 prize. Aniya Harvey and Carl Schmidt finished second, Sincere and Melanie came in third, and Kayda and Zach landed in fourth. Kenzie and Dylan were eliminated just short of the finale.
Which tracked with something the hosts had already flagged. Every time America voted to keep Melanie and Sincere off the chopping block, it handed her fresh evidence that the whole thing was worth another shot. “You only have yourself to blame for that, America,” Chelsey jokes.
She’s not arguing that viewers should ignore the behavior they watched for six weeks. She just doesn’t think criticism needs to become a life sentence. “They gave us entertainment. Let them reap their reward.”
Even Sincere deserves to move on. Just maybe, as Chelsey suggests, warn your friends if they spot him at the club.
