Shopping for foundation can be overwhelming. Serum formulas, matte vs. dewy, cult favorites getting reformulated, shade matches suddenly looking off—pair that with influencers shoving various products down your throat and you can find yourself in a full-on spiral in the beauty aisle. If you’ve been standing in Sephora wondering why buying foundation feels harder than it used to, you’re definitely not imagining things.

On a recent episode of Breaking Beauty, hosts Jill Dunn and Carlene Higgins are breaking down exactly what’s happening in the foundation world right now in an easy-to-understand way. They discuss why iconic formulas are changing, and which finishes actually work for different skin types. There isn’t one “best” foundation anymore, there’s only the best one for your skin, lifestyle, and preferences.

So here’s the easy-to-understand guide based on the episode:

Step 1: Know what you want your foundation to do

Before shade matching, decide your priority:

If you want long wear, look for phrases like:

  • Longwear
  • Stay-in-place
  • Transfer-resistant
  • Matte or soft matte

These keywords are best for oily skin, events, weddings, humid weather, long days.

If you want glow, look for:

  • Radiant
  • Luminous
  • Dewy
  • Satin finish

Think of these words for dry, dull, or mature skin.

If you want skin-like everyday makeup, look for:

  • Natural finish
  • Buildable coverage
  • Light-medium coverage
  • Serum foundation

Step 2: Coverage matters more than you think

Sheer coverage: Lets skin show through. Good if you like freckles, texture, natural skin.

Medium coverage: Most versatile. Evens tone but still looks real.

Full coverage: Best for redness, acne marks, events, photos.

And as an important note, Higgins and Dunn note that many newer formulas claim “medium to full,” but often lean fuller than expected.

Step 3: Choose by skin type

Oily skin? Look for:

  • Matte
  • Oil-control
  • Blurring
  • Longwear

Dry skin? Look for:

  • Hydrating
  • Luminous
  • Serum
  • Hyaluronic acid

Combination? Try natural matte or satin finishes.

Mature or textured skin? Look for flexible formulas that don’t settle into lines. Thin layers matter more than heavy coverage.

What is a serum foundation?

This is the biggest trend right now, but what is it? It’s basically a serum foundation that blends makeup pigment with skincare ingredients like hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, and botanical extracts.

They often feel lighter and look fresher, but may not last as long on oily skin. Both Higgins and Dunn repeatedly found that many of these serum foundations apply beautifully at first, but are weaker in staying power. So yeah, might be a good pick for brunch, maybe not for a 12-hour wedding.

What actually makes foundation look better

Forget expensive formulas for a second. The real game changers?

  • Moisturized skin underneath
  • Correct primer for your skin type (if any)
  • Thin layers
  • Letting each layer set
  • Using brush/fingers/sponge based on formula instructions
  • Powder only where needed

Sometimes the issue isn’t necessarily the foundation—it’s the prep.

Quick Cheat Sheet

For workday wear: natural matte or satin

For weddings/photos: longwear matte

For dry winter skin: luminous or serum foundation

For everyday no-makeup makeup: light-medium natural finish

For oily summer skin: oil-control matte

The hosts’ favorite foundations right now

If you don’t want to sort through every category yourself, the hosts did make it clear which formulas stood out most after testing dozens of launches.

Best overall glowy skin pick: Clarins Double Serum Foundation — $62
The hosts say this was likely their favorite overall because it gave a “beautiful luminous satin finish” with medium-to-full coverage. They also like that it delivers glow while still covering redness and describe it as dewy without looking cakey and say it creates a natural finish.

Best for: Normal to dry skin, glow lovers, anyone wanting skincare-meets-makeup.

Best luxe pick: Hermès Plein Air Luminous Matte Foundation — $145
Though expensive, the hosts note the finish was “absolutely stunning” and describe the application as a true luxury experience that felt like silk on the skin. They note it may need the right prep underneath for best wear.

Best for: Luxury beauty fans, special occasions, elegant soft-focus skin.

Best for oily skin/camera days: Estée Lauder Double Wear Stay-in-Place Lightweight Matte Foundation — $52
If you’re someone with oilier skin, the hosts say they would come back to this one and would wear it on camera. They like  that it still performed well and held up for long events, even if it feels different from the original formula.

Best for: Oily skin, long days, events, photography.

Best natural blur: Outside In Silk Serum Foundation — $64
This was another favorite and they praised the immediate coverage, soft-focus effect, and skin-first feel. The hosts note it dries down quickly, so skin prep matters.

Best for: People who want polished skin without heavy makeup.

Best drugstore glow pick: Maybelline Lifter Plump & Glow Foundation — $15
While not the right fit for oily skin, the hosts note it gives instant glow and could be great for someone who loves a radiant finish at a lower price point.

Best for: Younger skin, budget shoppers, dewy makeup fans.

Most polarizing pick: Rare Beauty True to Myself Natural Matte Longwear Foundation — $38
The hosts dislike how it emphasizes pores and texture, while acknowledging it may work better for younger skin. Dunn’s daughter likes it, which reinforces that skin type and age can change everything.

Best for: Smoother, younger, oilier skin types who like matte finishes.
