Reality TV can hook you with its drama, but sometimes it’s the real-life stories behind the cameras that stick with us long after an episode ends. That’s precisely what happens on Real Pod with Victoria Garrick Browne, where she sits down with The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives star Mayci Neeley.

Neeley is no stranger to the spotlight. She’s part of the viral “MomTok” TikTok group, a cast member of one of the most talked-about reality shows, and now, the author of the memoir Told You So. In the episode, Neeley opens up about surviving heartbreak, trauma, and loss while navigating faith, motherhood, and the realities of reality TV fame.

Why Mayci Neeley values honesty over drama

Neeley knows viewers tune into reality TV for the drama. Still, she believes that the real connections happen when cast members let their guards down. As she tells Browne, “Is it entertaining to watch you guys do fun things? Yes. But what actually impacts someone and makes them feel seen is vulnerability.”

That’s why her book feels so personal. “Honestly, reading it felt like reading a diary,” says Browne. “I felt like I just found something in your room that I maybe wasn’t supposed to be reading.” Neeley’s willingness to share the messy, unpolished parts of her story makes her stand out as a woman determined to use her platform for something bigger than ratings.

Turning early motherhood and tragedy into strength

Long before she became known online, Neeley’s life was changed forever in college. As a Division I tennis player, she became pregnant with her first child at 19. This experience challenged her identity and her Mormon faith.

Looking back, she admits, “When I got pregnant, I’m like, this is the worst thing to ever happen. My life is over. It’s never gonna be the same.” But she found strength in the very challenge that once scared her. “Turns out it actually ended up being the best thing for my life because I went from getting a 1.9 GPA to a 4.0,” she remembers, “and I came back because it motivated me to be a better person.”

That motivation became even more urgent when tragedy struck. While she was still pregnant, the father of her child died in a car accident. “Because of that, I have a lot of trauma, even from losing him,” Neeley shares. “To this day, death scares me. I don’t know. If my husband doesn’t respond to me in a certain amount of time, I’m like, ‘Oh my gosh. Did he die?’”

Confronting abuse and speaking out

In the episode, Neeley also discusses how she was manipulated in an emotionally abusive relationship. She recalls realizing the truth only after reading a checklist of abuse signs: “I could check off every single one. And I was like, oh my gosh.”

She also opens up about an even darker chapter—sharing in her book, and on the episode, about her experience of being sexually assaulted for the first time. “I don’t want to make it normal,” she says carefully. “But, unfortunately, in our society, it is because it is one in three women [affected], and it’s really scary and it’s really sad. And so I feel like that’s why I wanted to share it.”

By putting words to what many women silently endure, Neeley hopes others will recognize their own strength. “I want anyone who’s going through something similar to be like, I can do something about this, because that’s what I wish I would have done back then.”

Reality shows may thrive on cliffhangers and conflict. But the more profound impact comes from the human stories behind the headlines. Through her honesty about grief, trauma, and survival, she shows that what people really connect to is knowing they aren’t alone in their struggles.
