In the midst of the wellness podcast boom, Nina Westbrook, on Well with Arielle Lorre, sheds light on a paradox. The proliferation of content has led to a constant online hustle, often contradicting the very wellness values these discussions aim to uphold.

Host Arielle Lorre knows the grind firsthand. “It became my main shebang,” she explains about her own show. “And it’s a little harder. I would say the past year has been a little more of a grind. Just because of how saturated it is. It’s like fighting for attention basically.” That push for relevance—keeping up with social platforms, marketing episodes, and grabbing clicks—often feels at odds with the calming, reflective tone wellness is supposed to encourage.

Westbrook, a licensed marriage and family therapist, host of the Do Tell podcast, and founder of health and wellness platforms Bene By Nina and Nebbi, agrees. She admits she doesn’t enjoy the performative side of promoting herself. “You have to be like, ‘Oh my God, you gotta listen to my podcast,’ like begging people to listen and tune in,” she shares.

The pressure to stay visible in wellness

The two women reflect on how much has changed since podcasting first took off. What used to feel like a passion project now requires strategy, consistency, and relentless promotion. Lorre puts it bluntly: “Between social media and podcasting and everything…it is kind of an everyday challenge of like, how do I stay relevant and how do I get attention? That’s the commodity.”

For Westbrook, the relentless demand for visibility can be exhausting. “I’m a very private person, and it’s a constant struggle to find the balance between sharing about my life and keeping things to myself,” she confesses. This conflict, between maintaining personal boundaries and establishing a brand, is particularly pronounced in the wellness industry, where authenticity is a paramount value.

When self-promotion clashes with self-care

Westbrook admits that the pressure to be everywhere online can undermine the message she’s trying to send. And Lorre, who has also struggled with the tension between privacy and visibility, echoes the sentiment. “I feel like you have to lack a little bit of self-awareness to be successful on social media now,” she muses. “And I have too much self-awareness and I’m too private a person to do the things that will get you that attention.”

Why good content still matters

Both hosts are resolute in their belief that, amidst the cacophony of content, meaningful work still manages to cut through the noise, inspiring hope and reaffirming the value of their efforts.

Ultimately, while wellness can be about green smoothies, meditation apps, and the latest hot girl walk playlist, it’s also about understanding your own limits, recognizing when the grind is encroaching on your peace, and refusing to let the pursuit of visibility drown out your own voice. Both hosts are on this journey, navigating the challenges of the wellness industry while staying true to their personal goals.
