It’s one thing to dream about turning your side hustle into a full-time career, and another to actually make the leap, especially when you’re walking away from a stable job in healthcare in the process.

On Real Pod, hosted by Victoria Garrick Browne, guest Avery Woods opens up about her remarkable journey—from 12-hour shifts as a pediatric ICU nurse to becoming a powerhouse digital creator, wife, and mom of four. Her journey is a testament to the fact that with determination and hard work, one can achieve one’s dreams.

What makes Woods’ path different is how unplanned it all was. She wasn’t strategizing for fame, she was just sharing her life online—nursing scrubs and all. Before long, those everyday snapshots turned into opportunities that would eventually support her entire family.

How nursing shaped her

Before she was a social media force, Avery Woods was laser-focused on nursing. “There was a home video that my dad took when I was two years old, and I said I wanted to be a nurse,” she recalls.

That childhood dream led her into pediatric intensive care, a role she still speaks about with deep emotion. “I loved it because we had the opportunity to see them when they were admitted and so sick that sometimes you feel like they wouldn’t make it,” she says. “And then you’re able to watch them walk out with their parents, which is really, really special.”

Her passion for the work was undeniable, but so were the challenges. Long shifts, emotional exhaustion, and the constant demands of ICU nursing began to take a toll—especially once her online following began to grow.

The unexpected pivot to content creation

At first, social media was nothing more than a creative outlet. Woods remembers her earliest deal clearly: “I made $500 a month from that. That was life-changing money for us, $500 a month. That covered our groceries; that was huge.”

That small paycheck planted a bigger idea. If posting in scrubs could help cover groceries, what else was possible? She leaned into consistency, creating videos even on days she worked back-to-back shifts. “I promised myself, I’m gonna post every single day,” she recalls. “Even if I’m working a 12 and a half hour day, I would pre-film like three to five videos on my days off and be able to post ‘em on my lunch break.”

The grind paid off. Soon, brand partnerships multiplied, her following skyrocketed, and she had built a business robust enough to change her family’s life. Woods’s story is a testament to the financial potential of digital entrepreneurship, and it can inspire aspiring entrepreneurs to pursue their dreams.

Facing criticism and setting boundaries

Success didn’t come without backlash. Woods explains, “I was able to have my husband leave his job last year. He’s a stay-at-home dad. I support my entire family, my four kids, and was able to buy my house at 29 years old.” While some followers cheered her on, others were quick to criticize the gender role reversal.

“Women will say, yes, spend his money, queen, or this is the dream life I want,” she observes. “But the reverse of you being the breadwinner, people have something to say about it.”

Building a sustainable life online

There were also IRL moments that crossed the line into fear. From catfishing schemes to false nursing board complaints, the internet proved to be as ruthless as it was rewarding. Woods had to make tough calls about boundaries, especially with her family. Eventually, she pulled her kids offline and set stricter rules for how much of her personal life she shared.

Even so, she’s quick to point out that consistency was—and still is—the key to her growth. “I literally did not take a day off for probably two years,” she says. “I posted three TikToks a day for probably two years, you know. And that was when I really started to grow and find success.”

Avery Woods is thriving in the digital space

Today, Woods isn’t just surviving in the digital space, she’s thriving—and doing it on her terms. From pediatric ICU shifts to brand deals and podcast episodes, Woods’ rise shows what’s possible when passion, grit, and timing collide. And for anyone wondering if they could ever make a similar leap, her advice is right there in her example: be consistent, know your worth, and don’t let other people’s opinions define your story.
