Death to Stock

Everybody has rules they live by. Not the kind that are posted on a wall somewhere, but the quiet ones that run in the background of every decision you make without you even realizing it. On That’s the Point, hosts Jon Volk and Kristin Johns share theirs—and the range is honestly incredible. Some of these will make you rethink your entire routine. Others will make you want to drive to Taco Bell. 90

Here are the highlights.

Make your bed the second you get out of it

Before the phone, before the bathroom, before anything. “I make my bed immediately, and instantly, my room is clean,” Volk says. It’s the smallest win that sets the tone for everything else.

Never text a serious conversation

“So many things are misconstrued and misunderstood over text,” Johns says. “Nobody hears the tone in which you’re speaking,” Volk adds. If it’s serious, pick up the phone. If you’re brave, FaceTime. If you’re really brave, meet in person over a cup of coffee.

The burnt toast theory

Every time you burn your toast, miss your bus, or get stuck in traffic, you’re being delayed for a reason. Can’t find your keys for 10 minutes? That might have been you being protected from something you’ll never even know about. “Trust the process,” Johns says. Both hosts fully stand behind this one.

Nobody at the party is thinking about you

Johns calls this the invisible guest theory. “At almost every party or gathering you walk into, most people are not thinking about you,” She says. “Everyone is just trapped in their own head.” So the thing you’re so self-conscious about? Nobody noticed. The only person thinking about you when you walk into a room is you.

Put your oxygen mask on first

“I can’t pour from an empty cup, especially now that I’m a mom,” Johns says. For her, that looks like reading her Bible, prioritizing exercise, eating well, soaking in the sun, date nights with Marcus once a week, and making time for friends. “I realize this wholeheartedly. It’s important that I’m taking care of mind, spirit, soul, body so that I can be the best wife, mom, friend I can be.”

An emotion only lasts 90 seconds

Johns shares the 90-second theory: neuroscience discovered that an emotion only lasts 90 seconds chemically in your body. “After that, if you’re still feeling it, you’re the one keeping it alive,” she says. “So learn to let it go, especially the bad emotions.”

Jump in the water and get your hair wet

Whether it’s freezing water in Croatia or just something in life you’re overthinking, the rule is the same: just jump in. “There’s never been a time where I’ve jumped in the water and regretted it,” Johns says.

No budget for healthy food

“I will always spend the extra money to buy the organic vegetables, the farm-fed milk, all of that,” Johns says. She also drops the Dirty Dozen, the 12 foods with the most pesticide residue that you should always buy organic:

  • Strawberries, spinach, apples, peaches, nectarines, grapes, bell peppers, cherries, blueberries, green beans, and potatoes

Let whoever think whatever

“Your perception of me is a reflection of you,” Johns says. “I’ve been living by that this year, and wow, my life is bountiful.”

Always be generous

“We’re not talking just monetarily speaking, but just be generous with your time, with your action, with giving to others,” Volk says. “[My dad] always says, ‘I want people to remember me by my generosity,’ and that has always stuck with me.”

Get to Taco Bell once a month and have the Baja Blast

Johns’s final rule: “Get to Taco Bell once a month and have the Baja Blast.” No elaboration needed. Just get there.
