Samhita Mukhopadhyay

Samhita Mukhopadhyay, journalist and author, is the newest voice in the weight, health, and GLP-1 conversation, and she’s not interested in giving you easy answers. Host of the brand new weekly podcast, The Weigh In, Samhita is going straight for the most talked-about, most complicated topics out there with honesty instead of judgment.

A lot of those conversations come back to what it’s actually like to live in your body when everyone seems to have an opinion about it. Samhita isn’t there to tell people what they should do or hand out one-size-fits-all answers. She’d rather ask the questions people are already thinking about and let the conversations go from there.

You can hear that approach right away in the trailer. Press play for a quick introduction to Samhita and her new podcast, The Weigh In:

The Weigh In is a Weight Watchers podcast made for conversation, and it is not intended as medical advice. If you have questions about your own health, talk to your doctor.

Who Is Samhita Mukhopadhyay? Get to Know the Host of The Weigh In

Samhita Mukhopadhyay is an accomplished journalist, author, and the Head of Content at Weight Watchers. Her entire career has been spent at the intersection of politics, culture, feminism, and identity. She’s also no stranger to all the hot topics about weight loss in tabloids, headlines, and social media videos. She wrote about her own GLP-1 journey for The Cut before most people even knew what the medication was.

We’re not JUST impressed by Samhita’s résumé, though. She offers real lived-through experience. As someone who took a weight loss drug herself, she brings a personal connection to the conversations happening on The Weigh In.

She’s talked about how she lost her father to obesity-related complications and was navigating her own weight-related health issues. She also knew firsthand how hard it can be to trust the medical care you’re offered when the advice is always just “lose weight.”

Samhita describes herself as a body-positive feminist who eventually started questioning what body positivity could and couldn’t do for her. She had to figure out what respecting her body looked like for her while also making choices that let her live with dignity.

And she doesn’t describe that experience as simply “pro-Ozempic” or “anti-Ozempic.” She brings that same willingness to sit with the complicated parts to The Weigh In each week.

What Is The Weigh In Podcast?

The Weigh In is a weekly Weight Watchers podcast where Samhita explores weight, health, and GLP-1s from multiple angles. Samhita wants to have the conversations about weight and health that people are already having with their friends, families, and doctors.

There isn’t always going to be one clear answer, and she isn’t pretending there is. She’s more interested in hearing different experiences and talking through the parts that don’t fit neatly into one side or the other.

A lot of the conversations on The Weigh In come back to the fact that two things can be true at once. You can believe in body positivity and still make decisions about your health. You can have a positive experience with a GLP-1 and still have questions about the way weight loss is talked about. Samhita leaves room for both.

What The Weigh In Covers

What The Weigh In Covers

Samhita is pretty upfront about the topics she wants to get into on The Weigh In. GLP-1s, weight loss, body image, health, and the way all of those things show up in our everyday lives are all part of the conversation.

Here’s what you can expect to hear about:

  • Science behind GLP-1s and what these medications actually do
  • Side effects, including the physical and emotional ones
  • Body politics, from the judgment women face to the way thinness gets gatekept
  • Identity shifts that come with changing how you look and how you’re treated
  • Relationship changes with partners, friends, family, and, most importantly, with yourself

The show isn’t just about “weight,” which is why no topic is off limits. It’s about feeling seen, and understood.

If you’ve followed conversations surrounding body image, whether that’s through Barbie Ferreira’s body positivity conversation or Remi Bader’s weight loss story, this show will be right up your alley.

Two Things Can Be True at Once

Who Should Listen to The Weigh In

Regardless of what your typical weekly listen is, The Weigh In is a place for anyone who would rather have an honest, judgment-free conversation than a quick fix. You might already have experience with a GLP-1, be thinking about weight loss differently than you used to, or simply have complicated feelings about health and body image. You don’t have to have it all figured out before you listen.

It’s also a good fit if you like hearing people talk through their experiences without trying to turn every conversation into advice. Samhita comes at these topics as both a journalist and someone who has lived through some of them herself.

Listen to the First Episode

For the first episode of The Weigh In, Samhita sits down with Lindsay Peoples, the award-winning Editor-in-Chief of The Cut and co-founder of the Black In Fashion Council. They dig into how the media covers body image, why the public conversation keeps shifting, and Samhita’s own relationship to GLP-1s.

As you’ll learn while you listen, Lindsay was the friend who encouraged Samhita to publish her essay on GLP-1s and losing her dad in the first place. They talk about the judgment women face for their choices and the “struggle Olympics” mindset around weight loss. Most importantly, they talk about the shame that still surrounds a decision Samhita says should be between a person and their doctor.

Listen while you read along, it’s worth it:
