Scandals may fade from the headlines over time, but they never really disappear. On Scheananigans, host Scheana Shay sits down down with Kiki Monique and Ryan Bailey, where the conversation turns to two women who know this all too well: Monica Lewinsky and Amanda Knox.

What began as a light-hearted catch-up about astrology, family, and pop culture took an unexpected turn when Kiki shares her experience at a panel featuring both Lewinsky and Knox, who were promoting the hit show, The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox. It was there, she explains, that the profound impact of scandals became impossible to ignore.

How scandals shape a life

Kiki describes watching Lewinsky open up on stage, saying it was unforgettable: “Monica Lewinsky got choked up and started crying because she was still emotional over what happened to her.”

Lewinsky first entered the public eye in the late 1990s after her relationship with then-President Bill Clinton became the focus of a political scandal and impeachment trial. Barely in her twenties at the time, she became a central figure in an international media storm that reduced her identity to salacious headlines and late-night punchlines. The scrutiny was relentless—her private life dissected, her reputation tarnished, and her name turned into cultural shorthand for scandal.

For many, the details of the political fallout overshadowed the very real human impact on a young woman caught in a narrative she couldn’t control. But for Lewinsky, the pain wasn’t just about her own reputation. As Kiki emphasizes, “People don’t realize it’s not just you. They don’t realize what happens to your family. And the fallout to your family, which they can’t get away from.”

Hearing Lewinsky choke back tears decades later was a stark reminder of how long scandals last. “The fact that this happened, what, 20, 25 years ago, and she’s still emotional? It sent me,” Kiki reflects.

Amanda Knox and the parallels

The event also featured Amanda Knox, whose own scandal became a global obsession. The Scheananigans crew couldn’t help but notice the similarities between Knox and Lewinsky. As Kiki puts it, “I never thought about the parallels of Amanda Knox and Monica Lewinsky. It wasn’t like Monica was charged with a crime, but they really are. They lived parallel lives in the same way, where young women just kind of got thrown out there and their names will be infamous till the end of time.”

As Kiki alludes, Knox’s infamy was grounded in something a lot more sinister than Lewinsky’s. Knox was a 20-year-old American student studying abroad in Italy when she was accused, along with her then-boyfriend, of murdering her roommate in 2007. The case quickly spiraled into a global media frenzy, with Knox portrayed in wildly conflicting ways—an innocent student caught in a nightmare or as a manipulative “Foxy Knoxy” villain. After years of trials, appeals, and prison time, she was ultimately acquitted. Still, her name remains permanently linked to one of the most sensationalized scandals of the early 2000s.

Reclaiming the narrative

For Ryan, what stands out most is Lewinsky’s resilience and kindness. “To see her thrive in this moment—and I think she’s going to continue to rise and be involved in huge projects like this—is awesome,” Bailey says.

Even when scandals brand someone for life, there’s still space to take back power and rewrite the story. Lewinsky’s tears showed how deep the scars ran. Still, her presence as an executive producer on a popular television series showed strength, too.

By looking at Lewinsky and Knox not as tabloid fixtures but as women still carrying the weight of scandals, Shay and her guests remind us that behind every headline is a human being. Scandals may grab attention, but it’s empathy that truly lasts. And when you strip away the noise, that’s the real conversation worth having—one that’s rooted in understanding and compassion.
