Shows Like Desperate Housewives

There’s a reason people are still looking for TV shows like Desperate Housewives over two decades later. Reason number one? The picture-perfect suburban life that’s actually full of secrets, scandals, and quiet chaos. Reason number two, naturally: the curated blend of dark comedy, mystery, and soap-level drama. Few shows have the power to make THIS big of a cultural impact.

The Bossticks actually talked all about this in “Teri Hatcher on Reinvention, Resilience, Hollywood, & Living with Grace Through Every Chapter of Life.” (Yes, the very same Teri Hatcher who played the iconic Susan Mayer.) It wasn’t just a popular one-off series. It set the tone for SO many shows, including The Real Housewives franchise, that turned polished lifestyles, complicated women, and public-facing perfection into must-watch TV.

And that’s exactly what we’re here to talk about today. In this post, we’re sharing a handpicked list of shows like Desperate Housewives across multiple genres. If you’re into layered storytelling and drama that simmers beneath the surface, get ready to add to your “Watch Next” list.

15 Shows Like Desperate Housewives: Drama, Secrets, and Scandal

Desperate Housewives wasn’t one of those shows that had a big boom in popularity, only to later fizzle in rankings. It had true staying power, with its final episode drawing in a little over 11 million viewers. And, of course, an immeasurable amount of rewatches since it went off the air in 2012.

It wasn’t just the INCREDIBLY strong character ensembles that drew people in, either. (Though seeing Eva Longoria, Teri Hatcher, Felicity Huffman, and Marcia Cross in a series together is nothing short of iconic.) It was also the hidden secrets beneath perfect facades, female-centered narratives, and a perfect blend of humor and drama.

Which, speaking of legendary female leads, you can’t NOT listen to “Eva Longoria on Hot Cheetos, Desperate Housewives, & Her Mexican Roots!” Eva and Amanda Hirsch from Not Skinny But Not Fat talk all about Eva’s rise to Desperate Housewives fame.

Before we dive into our list of similar series recommendations, let’s first talk about what Desperate Housewives is—and what it’s all about. Knowing the show’s core appeal will set the stage for what’s to come. And trust us, you didn’t come here to be disappointed. Your next-up list is about to be STACKED.

What Is Desperate Housewives?

Desperate Housewives, created by Marc Cherry, is an American mystery comedy-drama series produced by ABC that aired from 2004–2012. The series followed the lives of four women on Wisteria Lane, a suburban street in the fictional town of Fairview, Eagle State.

Susan Mayer (Teri Hatcher) was the romantic divorcee. Lynette Scavo (Felicity Huffman) was the overworked mother. Marcia Cross (Bree Van de Kamp) was a perfectionist obsessed with appearance. And Gabrielle Solis (Eva Longoria) was the materialistic ex-model. They’re not telling their own stories, though. The series is narrated by Mary Alice Young (Brenda Strong), the fifth friend in the core group who committed suicide.

Naturally, this shakes both Wisteria Lane and the women in the friend group. And that’s only the beginning of the twists and turns this series experiences! Desperate Housewives ultimately became such a hit for its standout themes: suburban satire, mystery, and serialized drama. Creator Marc Cherry also perfected the combination of dark humor and soap-style twists with sharp comedy, secret revelations, emotional beats, and strong character dynamics.

Earning 38 Emmy nominations during only eight seasons, it’s easy to see why so many people crave more. And more. And more. And don’t you worry, we’re here to deliver!

What Is the Show Desperate Housewives About?

Multi-Layered Storytelling

With four main characters, you’re gonna get four main storylines. And while it may seem a little chaotic at first glance, it’s what makes Desperate Housewives such a cultural hit. Viewers also get to see how each character evolves over almost a decade. The personal conflicts, relationships, and secrets all unfolded in parallel, creating long-running storylines that keep people totally invested.

Mix of Comedy and Drama

We’ve said it plenty already, but Desperate Housewives is literally known for its blend of dark humor with emotional moments. It isn’t coined as a dramedy for nothin’! Lighthearted, satirical scenes often sit right alongside serious topics. Fans of Desperate Housewives still get relatable conversations and heartfelt moments—they just get to laugh AND cry at the same time.

Another example of people who blend comedy and emotion beautifully? Rainn Wilson. Tune into “Rainn Wilson: From The Office to Soul Boom—Finding Purpose, Spiritual Growth, & Meaning in Life!” Different vibe, same idea, equally as entertaining.

Strong Female-Led Narratives

Female-led narratives werepopular before Desperate Housewives came out—but they weren’t as common. Not compared to male-led series, at least. And, even better, Desperate Housewives had DEPTH. It explored themes like marriage, motherhood, identity, and friendship. It was also the perfect portrayal of women as layered, deeply human characters—not one-dimensional stereotypes.

And the fascinating part? Almost 40% of Desperate Housewives viewers were men. For a female-led show in the early 2000s, those stats speak for themselves.

For a deeper convo into the relationship between motherhood and identity (which Desperate Housewives touches on a LOT), tune into “Can We Just Be Honest About How Hard Motherhood Is? With Stephanie Biegel.” This episode of Let’s Be Honest is so important to women—and mothers—everywhere.

A Central Mystery

Each of Desperate Housewives’ eight seasons focuses on a new mystery surrounding a new character. You don’t lose out on seeing how the core friend group is intertwined; you just get a new shocking event to hyperfixate on! It’s a fun layer of suspense that keeps you invested, suspecting, and on the edge of your seat.

What Shows Are Like Desperate Housewives?

Good Girls

Where to watch: Netflix, Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video

Good Girls, a dark comedy-drama, follows three suburban mothers—Beth (Christina Hendricks), Annie (Mae Whitman), and Ruby Hill (Retta). Each facing their own financial difficulties, they decide that the best solution is to rob a grocery store. Makes sense! (We say with total sarcasm.)

Of course, it’s never that easy. After the heist leads to more problems than they expected, they’re shoved into a world of money laundering and organized crime. As the series progresses, we get to see how they balance their suburban personas with their newfound roles as criminals. Like Desperate Housewives, Good Girls is all about suburban mothers and their secret, high-risk double lives.

Totally NOT about robbing a local supermarket, but we have the perfect episode for this topic. Listen to the Emma Grede podcast episode from The Bossticks for a deeper discussion about business vs. parenthood.

Big Little Lies

Where to watch: HBO Max, Hulu, Apple TV, Amazon Prime TV

Another series that focuses on dark secrets and intense rivalries, Big Little Lies is like a more mature Desperate Housewives. This psychological thriller follows a group of wealthy women in a coastal California town whose lives are turned upside down after a shocking murder.

But here’s why we said it’s the more mature take on suburban living. Big Little Lies explores super serious themes, like domestic abuse, sexual assault, and social rivalries. And, while it can be dark, it’s also extremely relatable. Everything looks perfect on the surface, but a loooot of trauma and complexity is brewing underneath.

Oh! And can we talk about the killer cast and crew?! Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Laura Dern, Meryl Streep, Shailene Woodley, Zoë Kracitz, Alexander Skarsgård—need we go on?

If you’re craving more just like this, make sure to jump over to “Shows Like Tell Me Lies” next!

Devious Maids

Where to watch: Hulu, Disney+, Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video

As you watch Devious Maids, you’ll probably realize it has a LOT of similarities to Desperate Housewives. That’s because both shows were created by Marc Cherry! So, naturally, they give off near identical vibes. The series stars five Latina maids working for rich families in Beverly Hills. Except… one maid, Flora, is murdered in her employer’s home, and things get dicey.

From there, Mairsol, Rosie, Carmen, and Zoila, bound by friendship, navigate a tangled web of secrets, power dynamics, and dangerous truths. You’d be surprised to find what’s hiding behind Beverly Hills’ most prestigiousdoors. It’s dark, hilarious, undoubtedly mysterious, and a true reminder of why female friendships and support matter more than ever.

Oh, and it’s also produced by Eva Longoria! Double that Desperate Housewives touch.

List of Shows Like Desperate Housewives

A Million Little Things

Where to watch: Hulu, Disney+, Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video

On the surface, A Million Little Things feels like a heartfelt drama. A group of tight-knit friends, feel-good moments, and so many engaging characters. Underneath, though, you quickly realize that the suicide of one of the friends is the catalyst for what’s to come.

Like Desperate Housewives, this series’ foundation lies on secrets, emotional fallout, and complicated relationships. However, it’s less soapy and “whodunit,” and instead, grounded in emotional depth and personal accountability. The most important message? Friendship isn’t one thing, it’s… drumroll! A million little things. Cue the tears.

We talk more about this series (and similar recs!) in our post, “TV Series About Family Drama.”

Dynasty (2017)

Where to watch: Netflix, Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video

There are two reasons why we love the Dynasty reboot: Liz Gillies and the similar vibes to Desperate Housewives. Set against the backdrop of an affluent manor in Atlanta, the Carrington family has it all. Wealth, power, a global energy empire, and, naturally, secrets that could implode it all.

Like Desperate Housewives, it features high-stakes drama, suburban secrets, and sharp, witty moments. It’s definitely a bit more glamorous (you just need to see Fallon Carrington’s closet), but it still exudes feuds fueled by money, ambition, and social status.

And, honestly, this series gives off MAJOR girl-boss energy. Who doesn’t love that? Tune into “THAT’S EMBARRASSING” from What We Said for more about why women deserve to be powerful, successful, and badass—loud and proud.

Cruel Summer

Where to watch: Hulu, Disney+, Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video

Ever looked at someone’s life and thought, “Damn, I wish that were me.” Yeah, totally normal! Except Jeanette Turner, an awkward outsider in Cruel Summer, takes that mindset to the extreme. After once-popular queen bee Kate Wallis disappears, Jeanette sees this as an opportunity.

She takes her boyfriend, her friends, and her social status. What could possibly go wrong? It’s not like Kate will just magically return… right? Incorrect. When Kate returns, she isn’t just mad because Jeanette stole her entire life; she’s mad because she thinks Jeanette knows a thing or two about her kidnapping. Like Desperate Housewives, this suspense-driven storytelling and slow-burn tension make this SUCH an engaging watch.

Pretty Little Liars

Where to watch: HBO Max, Hulu, Disney+, Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video

If Desperate Housewives focused on high school teens instead of suburban women, it’d be Pretty Little Liars. Set in the town of Rosewood, a core group of five quickly becomes four after one of them goes missing. Over the course of the show, you’re constantly on the edge of your seat, wondering who’s responsible.

Aria (Lucy Hale), Hanna (Ashley Benson), Emily (Shay Mitchell), Spencer (Troian Bellisario), and Alison (Sasha Pieterse) were definitely Bree, Lynette, Susan, and Gabrielle for teens. You can actually hear more about what it was like to film Pretty Little Liars from SHE MD! Tune into “Pretty Little Liars’ Sasha Pieterse Sheaffer’s PCOS Journey.”

The Vampire Diaries

Where to watch: Peacock, HBO Max, Hulu, Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video

While supernatural elements set it apart, The Vampire Diaries is still rooted in small-town secrets and long-running mysteries. Mystic Falls, full of vampires, werewolves, and witches, isn’t all it seems. And Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev) is right in the middle of it. On the surface, it looks like a cute small town full of complicated teen relationships and entangled generational drama.

However, dig deeper, and you’ll realize that the storyline is much higher-stakes than you realize. Like Desperate Housewives, the serialized storytelling and interconnected character development will feel super nostalgic—and intriguing.

Interested in learning more about Vampire Diaries? You’re in luck! Listen to “Ian Somerhalder & Nikki Reed on the Truth About Hollywood, Sustainable Living, & Values That Matter.” It’s not a fullTVD deep-dive, but we think we speak for everyone when we say we’re tuned into anything Ian Somerhalder does.

Sex and the City

Where to watch: HBO Max, Hulu, Netflix, Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video

Set in New York City, Sex and the City shares Desperate Housewives’ focus on female friendship, personal growth, and the challenges of navigating adulthood. This comedy-drama follows Carrie (Sara Jessica Parker), Miranda (Cynthia Nixon), Charlotte (Kristin Davis), and Samantha Jones (Kim Cattrall). And, while there’s no murder mystery directing the storyline, their love lives are chaotic enough.

But, honestly, aren’t ALL of our romantic relationships confusing AF in our 30s? (Cue I’m in My Early 30s—Here Are a Few Things I’m Still Learning from Note to Self.) Beyond that, SATC focuses deeply on relationships, careers, complexities of adulthood, and female-led storylines. Just like with Desperate Housewives! Plus, every young woman HAS to watch SATC at least once. It’s like… the law.

You have to check out Kyle MacLachlan discussing his character’s exit from Sex and the City, too. Especially because he was ALSO in Desperate Housewives, so it’s such an interesting POV.

The Hunting Wives

Where to watch: Netflix

The Hunting Wives is frequently compared to Desperate Housewives, and we totally get why. Aside from being a steamier, darker, and more chaotic version of the series, The Hunting Wives totally shares similar themes. Picture-perfect suburban women, deep-seated secrets, scandalous murder mysteries—it’s all there.

Aside from that, this thriller and murder mystery series is intense, satirical, and, in many ways, deeply relatable. Which, actually, you can hear all about in “Malin Åkerman: The Gayest Show of the Summer!” Fans of scandal-driven storytelling will feel right at home.

Why Women Kill

Where to watch: Paramount+, Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video

Yet another Marc Cherry series, Why Women Kill, explores how betrayal leads to murder. Let’s get more specific, actually. It’s a dark comedy that explores why women’s reactions to betrayal end in murder across different decades.

As you’d probably expect, a lot of series centers around topics like infidelity. However, it also delves deeper into themes like self-discovery, survival, and mercy. Just like Desperate Housewives, Why Women Kill is dark, it’s funny, and it’s a little melodramatic. But it definitely shares the same tone and high-stakes storytelling.

After you watch, you’ll definitely want to tune into “Giving You Dating Nightmares, Fetishes, and Cheating Husbands” from Give It to Me Straight. SPOILER: This episode talks all about why it’s important to stop blaming the other person when your partner cheats.

Shows Similar to Desperate Housewives

Gossip Girl

Where to watch: HBO Max, Hulu, Netflix, Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video

Another teen show that exudes similar soapy vibes to Desperate Housewives: Gossip Girl! (The OG, of course.) Trading suburbia for the Upper East Side in Manhattan, GG keeps the secrets, scandals, and social warfare all Desperate Housewives fans are craving.

Plus, the series features hidden relationships and power dynamics that we think you’ll be pretty pleased with as you watch. Add a little more chaos and a lot more nativity, and you have a younger version of the show we all love so dearly.

And, because we can NEVER get enough of the OG cast, we have the perfect nostalgic listen for you. Head to The World’s First Podcast and listen to “The Leighton Meester Episode!” The iconic actress who played Blair talks all things marriage, feminism, and offers plenty of nods to Gossip Girl.

Ugly Betty

Where to watch: Hulu, Disney+, Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video

While lighter in tone, Ugly Betty TOTALLY gives off Desperate Housewives vibes. This American comedy-drama follows Betty Suarez, a Mexican-American woman who works at the high-fashion Mode magazine but lacks complete fashion knowledge. AKA, her style is… questionable.

Over four seasons, Betty transforms from a quiet, timid assistant to a confident, chic professional. So, naturally, Ugly Betty is drama-filled, intense, scandalous, and witty. Like Desperate Housewives, it’s an homage to women overcoming challenges—and that’s what we live for.

“FACE YOURSELF! Inspiring, Motivating, and Pushing Yourself to Be the Best You with Massy Arias” from What’s Your Spark? is the perfect episode for remembering who you are.

Bad Sisters

Where to watch: Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video

After the Garvey sisters—Eva, Grace, Ursula, Bibi, and Becka—experience a traumatic loss of both parents, they make a promise. They promise to always protect each other, placing their loyalty to their relationships above all else. And, after Grace’s husband becomes manipulative and controlling, the Garvey sisters do what all sisters would do. They plotted his murder.

Flipping between two timelines, Bad Sisters is as funny as it is emotional. Common themes include toxic masculinity, abuse, and how far people will go for those they love. Just like Desperate Housewives, this series knows just how to blend humor with heart.

All jokes aside, there’s a seriously beautiful episode that covers this level of loyalty perfectly. Listen to “Sisterhood as Medicine (with Dr. Sara’s Sister, Anna Reed)” from Treated with Dr. Sara.

Bridgerton

Where to watch: Netflix

Bridgerton has been all the rage for YEARS, and that’s not ending anytime soon. Often compared to Desperate Housewives, Bridgerton balances high-stakes drama with an affluent community sooo well. This romantic drama is set in Regency-era London, where high-society families navigate love, ambition, and reputation under constant public gossip.

It’s glamorous, it’s hilarious, and it’s got a little bit of Gossip Girl meets Desperate Housewives energy. And, similar to both series, Bridgerton’s drama drives the plot, while secrets carry the REAL consequences. It’s a period-piece version of suburban chaos.

If you’ve already seen (and loved) Bridgerton, you NEED to check out “Best Period Drama Shows” next.
