18 Shows Like Game of Thrones: New Epic Worlds to Get Lost In
We all have our guilty-pleasure watches. Some rewatch shows like Vampire Diaries—because who doesn’t wanna see Ian Somerhalder as much as humanly possible? Which, BTW, if this is you… Tune into the Ian Somerhalder and Nikkia Reed episode from The Bossticks! You’re welcome. Then you have people whose guilty pleasure is shows like The OC—nostalgia and drama wrapped up in a neat bow.
But there’s a reason GOT is one of the most popular TV shows of all time. So, in this post, we’re giving all the Game of Thrones fans exactly what they’ve been craving—similar series that live up to the hype. Expect wild, immersive battle scenes, powerful families clashing for control, and INSANE plot twists.
First, though, let’s explore a little must-needed GOT recap. This will help remind you of what this epic series is all about—and set your expectations for what’s to come.
What Is the Show Game of Thrones About?
Game of Thrones is an American fantasy drama series based on George R.R. Marin’s A Song of Ice and Fire fantasy novels. The story is set across the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros—a continent shaped by centuries of shifting alliances, rival houses, and long-standing power struggles.
Physically? Westeros is one “united” continent. Politically? It’s fractured, corrupt, and totally divided. But there’s one thing everyone believes can hold it all together—the Iron Throne. Whoever sits on it becomes the ruler of Westeros, with control over the armies, laws, taxes, resources, alliances—you get it. Naturally, powerful families fight (sometimes literally to the death) for control of the Iron Throne.
Some are good and genuinely want to unite the people of Westeros. Others are, well, power-hungry and evil as hell. Meanwhile, a far bigger threat—the White Walkers, an ancient army of the dead beyond the Wall—begins to rise. The problem with that? The families and kingdoms are too busy fighting each other to even notice.
While the political schemes drive most of the plot, that’s not all this series offers. It weaves in fantasy, drama, morally ambiguous characters, and ancient prophecies. Characters evolve in shocking ways, loyalties shift without warning, and the stakes are always life-or-death. It’s eight, award-winning seasons of love, power, drama, and politics.
Now what you’ve been waiting for: here are all of the shows like Game of Thrones.
Are There Any Shows Like Game of Thrones?
Absolutely. We’ll be honest, nothing hits the exact same—but true GOT fans already know this. However, there are definitely a ton of series that deliver similar vibes. Sprawling fantasy worlds, intense political drama, iconic character arcs, magic, mythology, revenge, romance—these recs have it all.
So, in other words? If you loved Game of Thrones, you won’t be disappointed.

What Other Shows Are Like Game of Thrones?
House of the Dragon
Where to watch: Hulu, HBO Max, Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video
Set nearly 200 years before, House of the Dragon dives straight into the Targaryen family dynasty. Yes—the same dragon-riding, silver-haired, OG Westeros power players. More specifically, Rhaenyra and Aegon II are in a huge conflict for the Iron Throne.
And when we say huge conflict, we really mean a civil war known as “The Dance of the Dragons.” It’s like a WAY more chaotic version of what Dr. Aliza was talking about in “How to Foster Friendship Among Siblings & Resolve Sibling Rivalry” from Raising Good Humans.
GOT fans will appreciate how familiar yet fresh this series feels. The world-building is rich, and the power struggles are, naturally, the center of the story. It’s an instant must-watch if you’re craving a little Game of Thrones nostalgia.
Vikings
Where to watch: Netflix, Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video
If you love mythology blended with intense battle scenes and “I never saw that coming” plot twists, you’ll LOVE Vikings. Even more intriguing? This series is based on real-life Norse legends. Think: the creation of the cosmos, powerful Gods, and epic battles.
This historical period drama follows Ragnar Lothbrok, played by Travis Fimmel, as he rises from an average farmer to a noble king. Throughout the series, though, we witness battles, religious conflicts, and historical Viking raids. Consider it GOT’s grounded, gritty cousin.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power
Where to watch: Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV
If your favorite part of GOT was immersing in a totally unique and cinematic world, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is EVERYTHING you’ll want. A prequel to the OG film, this series is set in Middle-earth, thousands of years before all the LOTR events.
Instead, this high fantasy expands on the forging of the nineteen Rings of Power. But don’t worry, we still get to see all of the juicy details and intense pilot twists. Think: the fall of island kingdoms, the formation of alliances, and narratives designed to control and corrupt others. It’s a littllleee softer than Game of Thrones, but it’s so worth the watch.
And given that The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 3 was just announced to be released November 2026, you’ll definitely want to catch up!
Succession
Where to watch: Hulu, HBO Max, Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video
Succession is for viewers who crave ruthless power and unchecked betrayal. Basically, think of it as a modern-day version of GOT dressed up in designer suits instead of armor. This comedy-drama follows the Roy family, owners of Waystar-Royco, a powerful global media empire.
But as soon as the owner falls ill, his four children tear each other apart for total control. And yes, it’s somehow equally as entertaining as medieval battles. Plus, Logan Roy gives off total Tywin Lannister vibes—ruthless, demanding, and fiercely loyal to their family name. You can actually hear more about it in “Analyzing Succession’s Parent-Child and Sibling Relationships!”
So no, it doesn’t have fantasy elements, but don’t let that deter you. The strategy and family drama will pull you right in. Want an inside scoop to the behind-the-scenes deets? Tune into “The Morgan Episode (with Justin Lupe)” from The World’s First Podcast!
Black Sails
Where to watch: Netflix, Hulu, Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video, Starz
If Game of Thrones featured pirates, oceans, and sweaty sun-drenched tension, it’d be Black Sails. Serving as a prequel to Treasure Island, this 18th-century historical drama follows Captain Flint and his crew as they fight against the British Empire and rival captains to protect Nassau.
To Flint, Nassau represents freedom, a shot at redemption, and a chance to rebuild. But to everyone else, it represents power, riches, and total control. It honestly feels very “Westeros”-inspired, just on the high seas. And like GOT, alliances are temporary and nobody’s FULLY trustworthy.
The Witcher
Where to watch: Netflix
If you stuck around GOT for the magic, monsters, and messy destinies, The Witcher is a must-watch. Plus, anything with Henry Cavill in it? Sign. Us. UP. The series follows Geralt of Rivia, a monster hunter trained since childhood.
His job is monster-slaying for hire, but destiny drags him into something much bigger. AKA, political conflict, ancient magic, and a world-changing bond with a princess named Ciri. You know, the usual. Like GOT, there’s political chaos across kingdoms and rich world-building. Plus the fight scenes? They’re cinematic masterpieces, to say the least.
Rome
Where to watch: Hulu, HBO Max, Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video
Dipping right back into real-life events, Rome leads viewers through the Roman Republic’s transformation into the Roman Empire. Following two Roman soldiers, Lucius Vorenus and Titus Pullo, the series blends historical politics with personal drama.
Plus, the duo becomes entangled with some of the most powerful figures of the era—like Julius Caesar, Mark Antony, and Octavian. Like GOT, it features alliances built on shaky trust, brutal warfare, and morally complicated characters you’re never sure about.
The Last Kingdom
Where to watch: Netflix, Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video
Yet another historical fiction series, The Last Kingdom, follows the story of Uhtred—warrior, outcast, and kingmaker. He’s stuck between a rock and a hard place, though, as he navigates life between Saxon England and Viking culture.
Because of his Danish upbringing and Saxon heritage, Uhtred is left right in the middle of powerful leaders as they battle for control of England. Like GOT, it blends emotional storytelling with warfare and edge-of-the-seat cliffhangers. You think you’ll start it as a casual watch, until it’s 3am and you’re screaming “WAIT, WHAT?” at your TV.

The Serpent Queen
Where to watch: HBO Max, Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video, Starz
Who doesn’t love watching a woman in charge, right? The Serpent Queen follows Catherine de Medici, a sharp-tongued queen of France tasked with navigating a dangerous court. She’s not just juggling court politics, arranged marriages, and ruthless enemies, though.
Catherine also recounts her life story to a young servant behind the scenes. The show is based on historical events, but it explores them with humor and plenty of antihero intrigue. Just like GOT, this series is stylish, witty, and delightfully dark. Instead, think Renaissance France vibe instead of Westeros.
Speaking of women in charge… Listen to “You’re Not Behind. You’re Just in the Wrong Room” from She’s So Lucky.
The White Queen
Where to watch: Hulu, Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video, Starz
If dynasty drama is your guilty pleasure, join the club. The White Queen is inspired directly by the War of the Roses—the same inspiration for GOT’s Stark vs. Lannister feud. But in this series, we watch Elizabeth Woodville, Margaret Beaufort, and Anne Neville—three women all fighting for the crown. Too bad they didn’t have THIS episode of Transform to listen to about the true power of female friendships.
At the same time, though, there’s also the conflict between the Houses of York and Lancaster. So, naturally, we get to enjoy lots of forbidden love, shifting alliances, and powerful women who shape the kingdom’s fate. If you love GOT, you’ll love the drama and romance steeped in power struggles in The White Queen.
The Expanse
Where to watch: Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video
Hear us out. The Expanse is like a beautiful blend of sci-fi WITH political complexity and compelling characters. Basically, it’s Game of Thrones… but in space. The series focuses on a colonized solar system where Earth, Mars, and the Belters are constantly clashing for power. The show begins with a missing person, making you think that’s all there is to it.
However, as the story unravels, you find out that there’s actually an ancient alien technology acting as a driving force. Yeah, it’s layered—but that’s what makes it SOOO good. Like GOT, the stakes feel massive, and the show’s pacing is effortlessly bingeable. Even if you’re not typically into sci-fi, this one grabs you and never. lets. go.

Spartacus
Where to watch: Netflix, Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, Starz
For fans of action and intensity, Spartacus is a total adrenaline rush—from the first to the last episode. Set in Ancient Rome (like… 1st century BC, to be exact), this series blends historical figures with fictional storytelling.
It follows Spartacus, a Thracian warrior sold into slavery and forced to become a gladiator. Except Spartacus refuses to accept his demise, rising from a gladiator to a legendary leader. And, reasonably so, his one goal is to rebel against the Roman Republic. Just like GOT, this series offers friendships, rivalries, loyalties, and sacrifices.
You know what else it feels like? “From Homeless to Healed: How Jewel Broke Free From Pain to Pursue a Life of Happiness & Purpose” from Real Pod! Super encouraging and inspirational.
Borgias
Where to watch: Hulu, Paramount+, Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video
If The Serpent Queen and Game of Thrones had a love child, it’d totally be Borgias. This historical drama is set in Renaissance Italy, under the patriarchal rule of Rodrigo Borgia. As if he weren’t powerful enough, his family also works to garner power and wealth throughout the Catholic Church.
Through scheming, seduction, and betrayal at every turn, it’s super Game of Thrones-coded. Plus, you also get an even blend of strategic thinking and unstable alliances as other powerful leaders in Italy have no idea who to trust. It’s lush, dramatic, and full of unseen twists that will pull you in further with every episode.
Think of it this way: Borgias = Kardashians. Both brands, both intensely loyal, and both have a center “Momager” running the show. Except the Kardashians aren’t evil, obvi. ANYWAY! Tune into “No F*cks Given ft. Kylie Jenner” from Khloé in Wonder Land. It’s so good.
King & Conqueror
Where to watch: Amazon Prime Video
King & Conqueror, an intriguing historical drama, explores how alliances can quickly become deadly if a common goal is important enough. In the 11th century, the English crown was a hot commodity—especially between William the Conqueror and King Harold. Although they were once “kindred spirits,” their destinies intertwine, turning them into instant enemies.
It’s a show rooted in real history, strategic warfare, and men making decisions that shift entire nations. (Sound familiar?) The battle scenes are intense, the politics feel sooo authentic, and the character dynamics will have you totally confused. It’s perfect for fans who love medieval storytelling and real-life relatable drama.
House of Cards
Where to watch: Netflix, Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video
Remove the swords and dragons, and add suits and cabinet positions, and you get House of Cards. Set in Washington, D.C., the series follows Francis Underwood, a U.S. representative who was promised the position of Secretary of State.
And once he was lied to and didn’t actually get it? He makes it his MISSION to destroy the president and his allies. Similar to GOT, the series features ruthless political operators who will do anything to climb the ladder of success. Plus, the “behind the scenes” manipulation is chef’s kiss.
TBH? He probably should’ve just listened to “Dana White: A Winner’s Mindset on Business, Health, & What It Takes to Get What You Want in Life.” Could’ve totally outsmarted them all.
Shōgun
Where to watch: Hulu, Disney+
Set in feudal Japan in 1600, Shōgun follows Lord Toranaga, a powerful warlord, as he fights to outmaneuver Lord Ishido and the other members of the Council of Regents. But then comes John Blackthorne, and English navigator who landed on the coast of Japan armed with knowledge that could disrupt Japan’s political and trade alliances.
While Shōgun follows real historical events and shifting loyalties, it’s still super similar to Game of Thrones. Just remove the magic and fantasy worlds, and switch it with slow-burn suspense and cultural clashes. TL;DR: Shōgun is the exact show you’d get if you mashed up Succession and GOT.
Dune: Prophecy
Where to watch: HBO Max, Hulu, Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video
Ever wondered what took place before the films Dune? Then you’re in luck—Dune: Prophecy is a TV series set 10,000 BEFORE Dune: Part One. The series follows tow Harkonnen sisters as they work to establish what will eventually become the powerful Bene Gesserit. At the same time, they have to navigate political intrigue, shifting alliances, and a growing threat to the Imperium.
There’s a lot to compare when you put Dune: Prophecy and Game of Thrones side by side. For one, both series feature powerful organizations that work night and day to control an empire. Beyond that, both shows have noble houses, morally gray characters, blind faith, and political influence. It’s the PERFECT watch for GOT fans.

The Tudors
Where to watch: Paramount+, Hulu, Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video
This historical drama series follows the early reign of King Henry VIII and his unending desperation for a male heir. And when we say desperate, we mean the series follows his 6 marriages, infamous affairs, and complicated relationship with the Roman Catholic Church. (If you know, you know). However, The Tudors also dives deep into political struggles, conflicts with historical figures, and what someone would do if they had absolute power.
Like Game of Thrones, The Tudors focuses heavily on power struggles, political back-and-forth’s, shifting loyalties, and hyper-sexualized Renaissance royal courts. AKA, if you like GOT… you’ll love The Tudors.
Movies Like Game of Thrones

Fighting as a gladiator, Maximus begins a dangerous journey to reclaim his honor, avenge his family, and challenge the empire from within. And little does Commodus know, Maximus uses his skills and experience to completely change the game. If you loved the political power struggles, betrayals, and larger-than-life battles in Game of Thrones, Gladiator delivers all of that in a historical setting.
Braveheart
Where to watch: Paramount+, Peacock, Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video
Braveheart follows William Wallace, a 13th-century Scottish warrior, who ignited and lead a rebellion against the English King, Edward Longshanks. Originally peaceful, William’s final breaking point was when English soldiers executed his wife. After that, he would do whatever it took to unite his people, fight for Scottish liberty, and inspire a rebellion that changes the course of history. If you loved the epic battles, political betrayals, and fight for power in Game of Thrones, Braveheart delivers many of the same high-stakes moments fans can’t get enough of.
Kingdom of Heaven
Where to watch: Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video, Google Play Movies & TV
After his wife’s suicide, blacksmith Balian is right in the midst of deep grief. When he learns he’s the illegitimate son of a powerful crusader, he embarks on a journey to Jerusalem, where he becomes entangled in political conflict, religious tensions, and a battle to defend the kingdom. But his journey isn’t just about power; it’s about maintaining peace, earning respect, and unity. If you loved the power struggles, large-scale warfare, and morally complex characters in Game of Thrones, Kingdom of Heaven is well worth the watch.
Troy
Where to watch: Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video, Google Play Movies & TV, Philo
Inspired by Homer’s Iliad, Troy follows the legendary conflict between the kingdoms Troy and Greece after Prince Paris of Troy (Orlando Bloom) elopes with Helen (Diane Kruger), the wife of the Spartan king. As thousands of soldiers descend upon Troy, the greatest warriors—including Achilles (Brad Pitt) and Hector (Eric Bana)—fight for honor, glory, and survival. Not only do both Troy and GOT share similar themes of intense political rivalries and sieges, they’re also both written by David Benioff! Instant must-watch.
