Simi Muhumuza Tells ‘She’s So Lucky’ How a Missed Job Became the Opportunity of a Lifetime

Rejection has a way of making people feel like doors are slamming shut for good. But on She’s So Lucky, guest Simi Muhumuza proves that sometimes what feels like a dead end can turn out to be the beginning of something life-changing.
Host Les Alfred introduces Muhumuza as someone who embodies self-love, style, and leadership. But before landing her big break, Muhumuza admits she was “so terrified of what was going to happen next in [her] life.” For her, rejection wasn’t just a single job slip—it was a moment of deciding whether she would keep trusting herself.
How rejection became redirection
After working as a marketing consultant in Atlanta, Muhumuza felt ready to move to New York. She had started applying for roles, but nothing seemed to land. “Everyone loved me for the most part, but no one wanted to pay for me to go,” she recalls. At the time, she felt stuck and out of options.
Finally, she landed an interview with Red Bull, a role that felt like a lifeline. She threw herself into the process, only to learn that the company wasn’t moving forward. “They eventually call me, and they tell me, ‘We really, really like you. Still, unfortunately, we can’t hire you because you don’t have enough…,'” she says. What they wanted was someone with sports experience, which she didn’t have.
The rejection hit hard. “I was super depressed,” she remembers. “I didn’t get the job. And at that point, I was feeling very, very unlucky.” But she didn’t let it break her.
Here’s where her story takes a turn. Muhumuza explains that something inside reminded her to stay steady: “I feel like whatever is guiding me—God, ancestors, whatever—I feel like I need to trust that I am an inherently lucky individual.”
The moment everything shifted
Just when she thought her path was blocked, Red Bull called her back with an unexpected offer—in New York. Muhumuza didn’t hesitate: “I was like, absolutely. I go up, I interview, and everything goes well, and they hire me that same week. And then they also pay for me to move from Atlanta to New York.”
That moment of rejection transformed into the opportunity she had been dreaming about. Looking back, she reflects, “I feel like that was when I really realized that anytime that you have doubt, just know that you are a very highly blessed individual.”
Turning 30 and redefining luck
Today, Muhumuza is in a new season of life, freshly 30 and more centered than ever. She tells Alfred, “I think I’m in this space where I’m like, I’m lucky because I have all of these things that I’ve always had. But for whatever reason, right now, I feel like I’m experiencing them in a way that I’ve never experienced them before.”
Her gratitude shines through in simple ways—friendships, daily routines, and the joy of waking up and choosing her own path. “Every day I wake up and, like, I can choose a new adventure. And I think that that is one of the coolest things,” she says. It’s not about perfection. It’s about perspective. “When I look at my life, I’m like, wow, I have been so lucky to be able to build the life that I’ve built and do the things that I want to do,” Muhumuza explains.
The lesson in her story
Muhumuza’s journey is a reminder that rejection doesn’t always mean “no” forever. Sometimes it’s the pause before a better opportunity, or a nudge to trust that timing matters as much as effort. “Rejection is redirection, which ended up being better than that initial job anyway, because that’s what you really wanted,” she explains.
For anyone staring down at a closed door, Muhumuza’s conversation with Alfred on She’s So Lucky is proof that the story isn’t over. Sometimes, rejection is just clearing the path for the opportunity of a lifetime.
