A Psychic Medium Just Explained How to Actually Recognize Your Soul Contract

If you’re someone who reads your horoscope before checking the weather and has at least three crystals on your nightstand, this one’s for you. With 41 percent of Gen Z now religiously unaffiliated but more spiritually curious than ever, the soul contract conversation is officially having its moment.
On Dear Gabby, host Gabrielle Bernstein sits down with psychic medium Rebecca Rosen to unpack what a soul contract actually is. The short version: it’s the pre-birth blueprint your soul agreed to before showing up here, including the lessons you signed up to learn and the people you’re meant to learn them with.
Here’s how to start recognizing yours.
A Psychic Medium Just Explained How to Actually Recognize Your Soul Contract
Pay attention to déjà vu
That weirdly specific feeling when a moment, a person, or a conversation feels like you’ve been here before? According to Rosen, that’s your soul reminding you that you actually have. “Déjà vu is a perfect example of it’s your soul re-remembering,” she says. “Reminding the human part of you that this is all part of the plan that you scripted to potentially play out.” The next time it happens, instead of brushing it off, take it as a little spiritual receipt that you’re exactly where you’re supposed to be.
Look at what keeps repeating
If the same exact situation, ick, or red flag keeps showing up in your life on a loop, that’s not a coincidence. “Karma shows up in patterns that we keep experiencing,” Rosen says. “A lot of times we could liken it to Groundhog Day. You go through it until you’ve learned the lesson and you’ve integrated it.”
Instead of immediately spiraling into “why does this always happen to me,” she recommends asking “okay…what am I apparently supposed to learn from this one?” It doesn’t magically make the situation suck less, but it can stop you from feeling like life is just randomly picking on you.
Not every soulmate is your soulmate-soulmate
“Soulmates, I think there’s a big misconception,” Rosen says. “People think it’s always romantic and it’s not. Our children, our parents, our best friends can be soulmates, but also partners, romantic partners can be soulmates.”
She breaks soulmates down into three types worth knowing:
- Reason: A “bump contract”—someone who drops in intensely, “comes in hot and heavy,” and leaves just as fast. “It was there to wake them up. It’s like a shakeup to wake up.” Never meant to stay, always meant to teach.
- Season: A soulmate who’s with you through a specific growth period and stays as long as the lesson is still being learned.
- Lifetime: Your ride-or-die soul connection. “You just know that you have been together many many lifetimes.”
That ex who came in like a hurricane and disappeared just as quickly? Probably a bump contract (and a gift in disguise).
Listen to your body
Sometimes your soul stops trying to send messages through dreams and signs, and starts sending them through your body instead. “The body keeps the score,” Rosen says. “The body knows before the mind is willing to accept. If you’re not going to listen to your guides and your higher self, your body is going to start talking to you.”
Pay attention to the parts of your body that keep flaring up, because the pattern is usually trying to tell you something. “We want to listen when it’s a whisper, not a loud roar.”
