10 Spring Reset Ideas for Anyone Who’s Been Feeling a Little Blah
Maggie Ekberg
If your apartment smells like a candle you lit in November and your wardrobe has been exclusively black, gray, and “I’ll figure it out later” since pre-New Years—congratulations, you survived winter. Now it’s time to snap out of it.
On That’s the Point, best friends Jon Volk and Kristin Johns go through their spring reset lists, and it’s basically a lineup of small things that trick your brain into thinking you have your life together. Here’s the checklist.
☐ Pick 3 new habits for the month and write them down
Not 17 things. Not a full lifestyle overhaul. Three. Volk’s are: no eating after dinner, phone locked from 7 p.m. to 9 a.m., and vitamins every day. “It makes it more fun compared to being like, “ugh, I need to take vitamins,'” he says. Johns adds that you should write them down with an actual pen and paper because apparently the number one through line of people with zero signs of dementia is that they wrote by hand for 10 minutes a day. So there’s that.
☐ Burp your house (or as the Germans call it, lüften)
Johns says to just open your windows and doors and let the air move through. They then discover mid-episode that this is actually a longstanding German tradition called lüften, which exchanges stagnant air for fresh air, combats mold, and reduces indoor pollutants. Volk says his grandparents have their windows open every single day regardless of weather. If your house has been sealed shut since spooky season, let it breathe.
☐ Do the 27 item purge
“Get 27 items in your house and donate it,” Volk explains. “It’s supposed to be multiple different categories and not just your closet. Go through your kitchen, your closet, your books, your cleaning supplies.” Stuff that can be donated goes to a local shelter. Stuff that can’t get tossed. He’s doing his on March 20th, the first day of spring.
☐ Get fun with your outfits again
“Mama’s been wearing bulky sweaters now for four months,” Johns says. She’s bringing color and pattern mixing back. “We’re going to be not afraid to do a pop of red shoe…Not afraid to mix patterns like stripes and polka dots.” If you need inspo, she recommends her sister’s page @ashlynnsalsbury.
☐ Bring a plant inside
Both had this on their lists independently. For beginners, Johns recommends Pothos (“the easiest plant to keep alive and the fastest growing”), Snake Plant (“you can’t kill it”), Monstera (“my favorite look-wise”), and Hoya, which trails and vines and “brings so much energy into whatever room you place it in.” Even just fresh herbs on the kitchen windowsill makes a difference.
☐ Make a spring playlist
Johns makes two playlists: one upbeat for walks and workouts, one calm and ambient for cleaning or just puttering around the house. “For seasons of the year, it’s so fun to have specific playlists,” Volk says. “They’re all such different vibes. Having a boppy spring playlist to get you in the mood for the warm weather, it’s a vibe.”
☐ Whiten your teeth
“It’s a wild ride becoming a coffee drinker,” Johns says. “I watched my old YouTube videos and my teeth were literally white as a piece of paper.” If you’ve been on the daily coffee train all winter, your teeth have taken a hit. Volks recommends Opalescence because it doesn’t cause sensitivity. They are also both committing to trying oil pulling this spring, which is swishing coconut oil for two minutes to pull bacteria. Neither has actually done it yet.
☐ Make a spring bucket list
“Get together and write some really fun things you would like to do before it gets too hot,” Volk says. “Hike, horseback ride, movie night, canning pickled vegetables, whatever.” Put it somewhere visible so you’re constantly scanning for which one to knock out next. It doesn’t have to be elaborate. It just has to exist somewhere outside your head.
☐ Create a signature spring drink
Johns did homemade strawberry matcha last spring and is leaning toward a berry syrup iced latte this year. The move is making a big batch of syrup so you have it all week and can invite friends over for spring lattes, which is genuinely the most wholesome flex.
☐ Declutter one drawer that’s been silently stressing you out
Volk did this with the cabinet under his kitchen sink. “There were probably 40 Trader Joe’s bags under there, not stacked nicely, but just stuffed in there.” He pulled everything out, reorganized it, and it took 10 minutes. When his wife came home he said he had a surprise. “She opened it. She goes, ‘That’s the best thing you’ve ever done.'” You have a drawer like this. You know which one. Ten minutes.
