By now, your camera roll is probably 40 percent screenshots of a life you swear you’re manifesting in 2026. The dream apartment. The hot Pilates body. The “I actually have my life together” energy. Vision boards are basically a New Year’s tradition at this point, and yet most of them end up shoved in a drawer by February.

On Dear Gabby, host Gabby Bernstein explains that it’s not because vision boards are a scam. It’s because almost everyone is doing them wrong. “Most people think vision boards are about cutting out pictures or, you know, just putting out high vibes onto a board,” she says. “It’s much more than that. It’s a lot more than that.” In other words, slapping a few Pinterest images on a board and hoping for the best is not the move. So what is the move?

According to Bernstein, it comes down to four steps.

Step 1: Get clear on the feeling

“The first step is, I want you to get clear about the feeling—not that material thing, the feeling behind it,” Bernstein says. “So before you touch any single image, take some time to meditate and journal and ask yourself, ‘How do I want to feel? And what emotions do I want to be my compass?’”

This is where most people rush, and it’s why vision boards fall flat. We jump straight to the results, the apartment, the job, the relationship, and skip the part that actually powers the whole thing. The board isn’t meant to lock in outcomes like a to-do list. “The true purpose of a vision board is to be a physical anchor for feelings that you want to experience in your next chapter,” Bernstein explains. “And it’s the feeling that needs to be ignited when you create the board.”

So instead of filling your board with “stuff,” go one layer deeper and ask what you think that thing is going to give you. If you’re picturing a new job, don’t stop at the title, ask what you’re chasing emotionally. Is it freedom because you’re tired of stressing about money? Confidence because you’re over feeling behind? Purpose because you want your days to feel less like a loop? Same with a relationship goal. It’s rarely just “a partner.” It’s wanting to feel chosen, emotionally safe, and not like you’re doing mental gymnastics over every text.

That’s the whole point here. You’re not building a board around what you think you should want. You’re building it around how you want your life to feel when you wake up on a random Tuesday.

Step 2: Hunt for feelings, not things

Once you know how you want to feel, then you start looking for images, but with a completely different mindset. Bernstein calls this step “hunting for feelings, not things,” meaning the goal isn’t to collect obvious symbols of success, but visuals that genuinely trigger the emotion you’re trying to anchor.

“You can look for photos online that resonate with you, and you can print them out. You can even use AI and maybe describe what you want to make and what you want these images to be,” she explains. “You can use your own personal photos from times that you felt joyful and really alive and awakened in your life.”

The key is that the image has to do something to you. It might be a photo of a house, or it might be a cozy couch, a sunlit room, or a peaceful morning coffee moment that captures the sense of calm you’re craving. Whatever makes the emotion click instantly is the right choice.

Step 3: Create your sacred portal

“This is the time to bring your vision to life,” Bernstein says. “As you arrange your images, I want you to think of this board as a portal. It’s like a bridge between the energy that you hold now and the reality that you’re calling in, that reality that you’re manifesting. It’s the meeting place of your thoughts, your emotions, and your intentions.”

Practically speaking, your board becomes a visual reset—something you come back to when your focus drifts or you start slipping into old habits. It “becomes like a physical reminder of where you’re directing your energy,” she explains, “and each time you look at it, you’re actually signaling to your brain and to the universe, ‘This is who I’m becoming.'” As you glue everything down, Bernstein encourages you to pause and feel gratitude for the future you’re calling in. The process itself matters, because the energy you’re in while you’re creating the board is part of what gives it meaning.

Step 4: The daily practice

“This is the step that makes all of the difference,” Bernstein says. “This is where you place your board somewhere that you can see it.” Not tucked in a drawer. Not saved in a forgotten folder. Somewhere you’ll naturally catch a glimpse of it during your day. And when you do, the goal isn’t to stare at it forever or recite affirmations like it’s a chore. It’s about taking “just 60 seconds at least” to really “feel the energy that it ignites inside of you.”

From there, keep it simple. Pick one image, close your eyes, and “just feel into the feeling of freedom, feel into the feeling of joy and love and abundance, whatever it is that you’re cultivating, and just let that feeling wash over you.”

Think of it less like manifesting and more like emotional muscle memory. The more often you practice the feeling, the easier it becomes to access. “This daily ritual is constantly preparing your subconscious mind for what’s coming,” Bernstein explains. “It’s reinforcing the neural pathways, and it keeps your desires at the forefront of your awareness…it’s constantly reinforcing the feeling of already having these desires in your life.”

Over time, that feeling stops feeling far away. It starts to feel familiar—not something you’re chasing, but something you’re already learning how to hold. And that’s the real shift. When your brain and nervous system recognize a feeling as normal, that’s where the magic actually lives.
