A Psychic Medium Explains What Happens When We Die and It's Oddly Comforting

Ever have a phase where life starts feeling like a rerun…and not in a cute comfort-show kinda way? Same arguments, same situations, same “why am I like this” spiral—just with different outfits and a slightly new cast. Well, according to one psychic medium, there might actually be a reason for that.

On The Art of Being Well, host Dr. Will Cole sits down with spiritual teacher and bestselling author MaryAnn DiMarco to unpack soul contracts, spirit guides, intuition, and the invisible patterns shaping our relationships and choices. The conversation gets deep, comforting, and honestly kind of mind-bending in the best way.

Below are the highlights, adapted from the episode.

So how did you first realize you were psychic?

“My mom is a spiritualist. She always has been. She’s been into the metaphysical and used to drag me around with her when I was a little girl to meditation classes. I was ‘om’-ing and trying to find my third eye at a very young age. I didn’t even know what that meant, but I thought it was really cool…

…She made it very normal for me. And it wasn’t until—I denied it for a very long time. I knew I was psychic, but I didn’t really want to deal with it in a way that felt awkward and weird and out of place. I wanted to be normal. And so when I got into my thirties, I wound up going through a massive change in my life…I was getting divorced. I was dealing with deep grief. I had these two little children. And I wound up in the hands of a spiritual teacher, Pat Longo…She said to me, ‘I’m not a psychic. I’m a healer. And I teach people how to connect with their psychic abilities.’ And I just thought, ‘Yeah, this is the time I’m supposed to do this.'”

What exactly is a ‘soul pack’?

“Soul packs are the people that we have in our lives right now. We have probably lived past lives with them. We go lifetime after lifetime. I’m not really clear as to why. I can only say that we learn from each other contractually. I know that some people in my life who have even been a fleeting moment, there was a contract there and it taught me something…

…I’ve done past life regression—I’m pretty sure I mothered my mother in a past life. I mother her often now. I’m sure she wouldn’t mind me saying that if she listens to this podcast. Mom, I love you, but you know, I mother you. It’s okay.”

What are soul contracts—and can you renegotiate them?

“We all come here with lessons to learn. We have signed up for them. And so I just call them soul contracts. They are negotiable…I have a meditation that I do where I set up a boardroom and I go in with my guides and I’m like, ‘Look, I’ve worked on this real hard. Can we start to repurpose this or look at it in a different way?’ But there are things like fear, doubt, comparison, impostor syndrome, all kinds of things that can come up in your life. And I always say the great way to recognize a soul contract is: is your story starting to annoy you? Are you starting to make choices that are repetitive? Do you keep repeating the same pattern? And when that occurs, try to recognize it as maybe this is a learning moment for you and this is a contract that you can work on.”

What happens when we die?

“I am not afraid to die…Getting there and being part of what I feel is complete love, ultimate peacefulness, higher awareness and knowing the answers that your soul couldn’t come to realization in this life are being given. And I think we’re returning home and that feeling of—you know, when you’ve been on a long trip and you just kind of throw your bags in your room and just plop down on your bed and there’s something about that relief and that safety of being home? That is what I feel [during readings]. I’m a firm believer in it. And it’s so comforting. It’s probably one of the most comforting parts of my job is to know how well they are on that other side. And I do believe our work continues. I don’t think it’s something that we just sit around floating on a cloud. I think there’s work there.”

How can someone start speaking healing into their own life?

“If you want to heal your body, you have to speak about your body in healing terms. If you want to heal your mind, you have to welcome that healing in and take accountability and responsibility and the action that you need to take in order to get that done…

…I am a person who will talk to my cells and say, ‘You are healthy, do your job,’ you know? Or ‘Get to work,’ whatever it is. If I’m feeling low in energy—I talk about going through menopause in [my book], and I had to really navigate what that was. I needed to speak about my body in a different way. It wasn’t, ‘Hey, I’m gaining weight.’ It was, ‘My body is trying to understand its balance.’ I think you have to sort of really work it, but you want to get to the bottom of the reason. Please don’t bypass it all. There’s a reason why it comes up the way it does. So, make your mantras your own. One of my favorite and easiest things to say, however, is: please show me the way and I will say yes. Please open my eyes to the signs and symbols that I need. I will recognize them, be accountable, and I will say yes. I am ready now. I am ready to receive ‘fill in the blank.’”

You consider yourself Catholic—how does that coexist with mediumship?

“I still consider myself a Catholic at my foundation…I can tell you that I’ve been called a heathen and told I’m going to hell and all these things. I’ve received some very colorful emails, but it’s not something that I really pay attention to…

…I think that it sits so well within my body that I know that it’s right for me. I used to kind of be a little crass about it and I’d say, ‘I have one judge and jury and I’ll worry about that when I get there.’ But I don’t really say that anymore as much. But there is an element of truth still behind it. I have work to do and I feel so called to do it that if my work is out of alignment for somebody else, it’s really none of my business.”

Do we all have the ability to connect with our intuition like this?

“We’re all psychic in some way. You do not have to come to a psychic medium for these things…I think we have a tendency to make it weird and odd—’Oh, she talks to the dead people. I don’t do that’—but we all can do that. And I think depending on how we’ve been brought up, depending on societies that we live in, we’ve just been taught to forget it. And I think what we’re starting to see now is, that veil is getting very, very thin. And that there’s been a shift in perspective…

…Consistency is key. And I think you have to be realistic about what you’re asking yourself to do. Pick a day, write it out. whole week schedule, monthly schedule, I don’t really care. If you wake up in the morning and all you can muster up is maybe some gratitude for a good cup of coffee that morning and a little half hour of peace and calm before you get your day started, that’s perfect. If you are a person who can create a whole meditative space in your house and be there for an hour doing writings and bringing yourself to meditation—wonderful, then do that. Just do it consistently. If prayer in your temple, your church, wherever you are, is what is serving you in that moment, wonderful. Do it consistently. That’s really all I ask because just like any other muscle, it needs care. It needs love. And we have to sort of allow ourselves to gradually work up this muscle. We also have to be aware that sometimes that might change up based on your lifestyle and your needs in the moment. And that’s okay, too.”
