From reality television to New York Times bestsellers, Holly Madison has been a prominent figure in pop culture for over a decade. Beginning with her time on The Girls Next Door as Hugh Hefner’s “Number one girlfriend,” we’ve watched her through so many distinct, defining eras. However, even after listening to the Holly Madison podcast interview on The Bossticks, the fans were still left wanting more.
In fact, a lot of us were asking: Who is Holly Madison really? Because being a fan-favorite Playboy Bunny is just one chapter of her story—not the whole narrative. But instead of fans having to rely on sensationalized headlines, Holly’s here to tell her story on her own terms with her brand new podcast, You Wish!
You Wish is a space built on the idea that what looks glossy on the surface is a little messier underneath—and that’s the lens we’re bringing into this conversation. In this post, we’ll tell you all about who Holly Madison is, how she became famous, and what she’s doing now. And, of course, we’ll also fill you in on all the juicy details of Holly Madison’s podcast launch and what you can expect in the future.

Who Is Holly Madison? Playboy, Reality TV, and Her Life Today
Born on December 23, 1979, in Astoria, Oregon, Holly Madison spent her early childhood in the small, coastal town of Craig, Alaska. At age 11, her family relocated to St. Helens, Oregon, where she spent her tween and teen years. (You can hear a little bit about Holly’s time in Alaska in THIS part of her podcast!)
After graduating from high school, Holly Madison enrolled at Portland State University, where she studied theater and psychology. But her path didn’t stay traditional for long! During her second year, she attended an open casting for Playboy’s “Playmate of the Millennium,” only to later discover it was a publicity stunt. Even so, it caught her attention.
Moving to Los Angeles at 20 to pursue college, acting, and modeling, Holly spent her time as a waitress at Hooters—a job she truly enjoyed. One random day, though, Holly was approached by a customer… who just so happened to be one of Hugh Hefner’s friends. The man asked if she wanted to attend a pool party at the Mansion, where she would later meet Hefner himself.
After being a year-long regular at the Mansion, a spot opened up to become one of “the girlfriends,” and Holly took it. However, it wasn’t all it was made out to be. In fact, you can hear Holly discuss her time in the Playboy Mansion in THIS part of The Bossticks. Needless to say, by 2002, the world knew Madison as Hugh’s “number one” girlfriend, a role explored more deeply on the E! reality TV show, The Girls Next Door.
While Holly Madison was a trailblazer throughout 2000s pop culture, her story didn’t end there. She’s since broadened her career, publicly rebranded her image, and made a meaningful impact as an advocate for manipulative relationships.

Why Is Holly Madison Famous?
The Girls Next Door Era
2005 marked E!’s release of reality TV show, The Girls Next Door, which aired for 6 seasons from 2005–2010. The series documented the lives of Hugh Hefner’s girlfriends, includingHolly Madison, Bridget Marquardt, and Kendra Wilkson, and their time in the Playboy Mansion. While on The Girls Next Door, Madison was never officially framed as the main character. But when you’re Hefner’s “number one,” that role just sort of comes naturally.
To the public, the series presented the mansion as seemingly wholesome, glamorous, and luxurious. Fans got a first-row seat to the girlfriends’ daily lives, all the lavish mansion parties, and what life looked like alongside the famous Hugh Hefner.
But behind the carefully curated scenes, there were power dynamics and high expectations the viewers didn’t see. Listen to Holly Madison discuss The Girls Next Door in her FIRST episode of You Wish, “The Mother of Manifestation: Trisha Paytas.”
Her Role at the Playboy Mansion
It’s no secret that The Girls Next Door presented a polished, almost fairytale version of life inside the mansion. However, Holly Madison’s real-life role was FAR more nuanced. As Hefner’s #1 girlfriend, Holly held a unique position in the home—one that came with rules, expectations, routines, and responsibilities.
For example, Madison really took on a more managerial role. She kept track of the girlfriends’ schedules, maintained order, oversaw the recruitment of new models, and served as “Playmate Editor.” In both memoirs and interviews, Holly’s been super transparent about what this experience looked like and what it actually entailed—both mentally and emotionally.
Reality TV and Entertainment Career
Following her time on The Girls Next Door, Holly Madison began creating a career on her own terms. She moved from Los Angeles toLas Vegas, where she starred as the lead in the burlesque show Peepshow from 2009 to 2012. As “Bo Peep,” Holly played a woman who discovered her sexuality. (Check out our post on the best sex podcasts if this sounds right up your alley!)
You thought she stopped at her Vegas residency? Think again. Here’s everything Holly Madison starred in or was featured in:
- MTV Cribs (2002): An episode all about the Playboy Mansion, Holly starred alongside Hugh Hefner in an MTV Cribs episode that highlighted the infamous “party pad.”
- Curb Your Enthusiasm (2005): Playing herself, Holly appeared in season 5 alongside her The Girls Next Door cast members, as Larry David visited the Playboy Mansion.
- Holly’s World (2009–2011): This spin-off reality TV show follows Holly as she embarks on her new Vegas life and career.
- Dancing with the Stars (2009): Holly competed in DWTS season 8 with Dmitry Chaplin, though she was eliminated during the third week.
- The House Bunny (2008): Appearing alongside Bridget Marquardt, Kendra Wilkinson, and Hugh Hefner, Holly made a cameo in the comedy House Bunny, playing herself.
- Celebrity Family Feud (2008): Competing alongside Kendra and Bridget, Holly appeared on the first season of Celebrity Family Feud against Vincent Pastore’s family.
- The Telling (2009): Starring alongside former co-star Bridget Marquardt, Holly played “Stephanie,” the leader of a sorority.
- Kendra (2009–2010): Holly frequently appeared in Kendra, a spin-off following Kendra Wilkinson’s life post-mansion.
In addition to acting, Holly has also produced multiple TV shows and podcasts—that you DEFINITELY need to listen to and watch. We’ll talk more about this in a sec. For now… what actually happened to Holly Madison?
What Happened to Holly Madison?
Her relationship with Hugh Hefner ended in 2008.
In October of 2008, Madison officially announced the end of her relationship with Hugh Hefner. The reason for the breakup? They wanted different things. But, honestly, that’s just scratching the surface.
In fact, on The Bossticks, Madison shared: “It wasn’t really one last straw thing. It was a couple of things. One was I wanted to have kids, and that wasn’t going to happen. Two, Hef was changing a lot. I don’t know what was going on with him. I don’t know if it was like dementia kicking in or if it was other stress things I didn’t know about, but he was getting really mean.”
While she hasn’t yet discussed this on You Wish, we’re hopeful she’ll open up more about it in the future.
She later described the mansion environment as emotionally difficult.
Holly Madison has notoriously described her time at the Mansion as “cult-like.” And being that she was Hugh’s “Number one,” she went through a lot that didn’t come to light until much later. In her memoirs, which we’ll get to next, Madison took a completely vulnerable approach to her experience.
She noted that the girls were isolated, the sexual dynamics felt like a chore, and there was a pressure to maintain a picture-perfect image. As a result, Holly began to lose her self-identity and worth, leading her to a deep depression.
For anyone out there who feels like they can even slightly relate, listen to “The 4-Step Method to Build Confidence, Train Your Brain, and Create Transformative Results with Izzy Utterson” from Beyond the Mat. It’s seriously inspiring—and a reminder that you’re powerful, capable, and always enough.
She spoke publicly about the experience in interviews and books.
In June 2015, Madison released her debut memoir, Down the Rabbit Hole: Curious Adventures and Cautionary Tales of a Former Playboy Bunny. This was the first time she had FULLY opened up about her time in the Playboy Mansion. And, needless to say, fans found it both shocking and empowering.
Holly shared that she wrote the book because she was tired of all the misconceptions. Rather than viewing Playboy as some magical fairyland, she wanted people to know how dark, discouraging, and dangerous she found it.
Since then, she’s appeared on numerous podcasts and given many interviews discussing both her memoirs and her experiences. It’s a reminder that, just like You Wish strives to capture, what glitters isn’t always gold.
If you want an in-depth conversation about everything we’ve discussed so far, listen to “Holly Madison on Life at the Playboy Mansion, Early 2000’s Fame, & Finding Herself Again” from The Bossticks! And, of course, don’t forget to stay tuned into You Wish, we’re SO excited for all Holly’s gonna talk about.

What Is Holly Madison Doing Now?
Podcasting and Media Presence
Holly Madison launched You Wish, her Dear Media-produced podcast, to explore the reality behind curated publicity. And, as someone whose life was presented one way but experienced very differently, who better to unpack that?
Through candid conversations, Holly plans to interview “cultural wildcards” about their life-changing experiences and reinvention stories. Essentially, she wants to have conversations about what happens after the wish of fame and fortune comes true. She’s fully aware that luck rarely works alone—and she’s ready to explore that.
For example, listen to Holly Madison and Trisha Paytas talk all about vision boards and manifestation! And, if you want to start a little manifestation journey of your own, listen to “The 4 Law of Attraction Practices I Can’t Live Without” from Dear Gabby!
Author and Memoir Success
Long before You Wish, Holly Madison was reclaiming her narrative through writing. We already told you about her 2015 debut memoir, Down the Rabbit Hole, but this New York Times bestselling author didn’t stop there.
In 2016, she released The Vegas Diaries: Romance, Rolling the Dice, and the Road to Reinvention. This memoir focuses on Holly’s life after leaving the mansion. She discusses what it was like to start over in Las Vegas, her experience as a showgirl, and even her dating life. It’s candid, reflective, and completely transparent—and that’s why we love it (and her!) so much.

Television and Entertainment Projects
While The Girls Next Door introduced Holly to mainstream media, that was only the beginning of her entertainment career. We mentioned all the series and movies she starred in, but she’s also a producer! More specifically, she’s known for her work in true crime, producing:
- The Playboy Murders (2023–2025): Holly served as both executive producer and host of the Investigation Discovery docuseries. This series investigated the murders and scandals that surrounded the Playboy brand. Trigger warning! It features themes of obsession, danger, abuse, and violence. But with Holly as the host, we get plenty of inside perspective.
- Lethally Blonde (2024): This true crime docuseries, produced and hosted by Holly Madison, explores the dark side of fortune and fame. Touching on topics like jealousy, obsession, and murder, Holly retells tragic stories about what happens behind closed curtains.
These projects showcased a totally different side of Holly; one that was independent, performance-driven, and in control. If you’re craving more of this kind of content, read our post, “Good True Crime Podcasts for Your Next Obsession!”
Social Media and Brand Presence
Today, Holly maintains a strong digital presence, using social media to connect directly with her audience. And the best part? Her socials allow her to present her more relatable, authentic side—no scripted storylines necessary.
Here’s where Holly Madison is active on social media:
- Instagram: @hollymadison
- TikTok: @hollyjeanmadison
- YouTube: @OfficialHollyMadison
- X (Twitter): @hollymadison
Rather than relying on traditional media, Holly uses socials to share podcast updates, true crime content, fashion and lifestyle clips, and even nostalgic throwbacks.
Public Rebranding
Holly Madison isn’t just a former Playboy Bunny. Over the years, she’s invested time and effort in a total rebrand, shifting into a multifaceted role as an author, podcast host, and media personality. Beyond that, she also has two kids, Rainbow Aurora Rotella and Forest Leonardo Antonio Rotella, who she peacefully co-parents with her ex-husband, Pasquale Rotella.
For Holly, it isn’t about ignoring where you came from. It’s about embracing your past, focusing on the present, and striving for a powerful, inspiring future.
Holly Madison is an author, podcaster, and media personality who blossomed beyond Playboy to write her own motivating story.
While you may know Holly Madison as one of the OG Playboy Bunnies, that’s hardly the half of it. She’s rebranded into a New York Times bestselling author, passionate true crime enthusiast, loving mother, and, now, an incredible podcast host! If there’s one thing you should take from Holly’s story, let it be this: the version we’re shown is rarely the whole truth—which is the premise of her brand new podcast, You Wish! We can’t wait to watch Holly crush it.
