If you are throwing a lavish party, there is one woman you’ll want to have in your arsenal. Los Angeles-based wedding and event planner Mindy Weiss is the planner extraordinaire who knows how to add sparkle to every celebration. She creates meaningful and unforgettable events for clients worldwide.
Weiss has been working with the Kardashion-Jenner family for decades and has brought countless family parties to life. Her first project for the family was creating wedding invitations for Kris Jenner and Robert Kardashian. In 1979, she went on to plan the baby shower for Kourtney Kardashian.
Weiss sat down with Khloé for an episode of Khloé in Wonderland to discuss party planning and how each family member puts their own unique spin on every celebration.
“Mindy Weiss has been a part of my family for decades—before I was born. You are the end-all to be-all in my eyes,” Khloé says.
Weiss has been in the event planning industry for 35 years, handling all types of events. She is meticulous about details, from choosing decor to setting tables. “When people ask why I’m doing that, I just say, ‘It’s part of the job.’”
Although being an event planner wasn’t her original plan, Weiss remembers that her parents threw the most creative parties, acknowledging that the event planning gene was simply in her blood. She has one memory of her parents planning her 16th birthday party at a Playboy Club. “Now I’m so embarrassed when I tell people, but my mom was so funny. Back then, I was so obsessed with having boobs. She decided to plan my Sweet 16 at the Playboy Club. Literally the bunnies had ‘Mindy’s Sweet 16’ sashes and my cake was a torso.”
Weiss got a job at a stationery store called William Ernest Brown, which is where she met Kris Jenner. While working at the stationery store, a client’s son asked her to throw a party. “I had never done that before, but I loved this family. It was this big birthday. So when I went to look at the venue, there was a party going on, and I took down every vendors’ name. I faked the whole thing.” That single party led to more clients.
Khloé shares that beyond being an “insane party planner,” Weiss is a master at connecting with her clients. To that Weiss says, “If you are planning or doing anything that is so intimate, that’s where the connection comes in. I kind of have to be a chameleon for some people because I’d never let them know how I really feel.”
Weiss began by planning Kris’ baby showers and now handles all the Kardashian-Jenner baby showers. She works with every family member, each with their own distinct style.
Weiss says that the parties have become such a big deal because of the matriarch of the family: Kris Jenner. “It’s because of your mother. You guys all want to have that feeling and that memory of a party. All of you, not one of you, all of you celebrate everything, which is a great thing for me!”
Khloé asked Weiss if there were any quirks or differences for each family member: “I know exactly when I get the call what the expectations are. I know the pattern of each person,” Weiss says.
Here’s the breakdown:
Wedding planning is not always the most glamorous job, but it requires a person who is a chameleon, a trait that Weiss says you are just born with. In her personal life, Weiss keeps it simple: “I don’t really like parties because it reminds me of work. In my family, I am only responsible for Hanukkah. I get it catered, and it’s beautiful.”
When asked what’s next, Weiss shares about her love of writing: “During the pandemic, I wrote a flower girl book about my grandkids. I wrote a ring bearer book about my best friend’s grandson. I also wrote a 500-page wedding book on how to get married.”
When asked if she’s going to retire anytime, Weiss laughs and says, “What would I do?”
Weiss doesn’t think about retiring too much, unless she’s tired. “I want to keep elevating and doing unique events. There are some really good event planners out there. I love competition. It’s better than sex to me.”
