John Legend Says He’s Teaching His Children ‘Life Lessons’ Through Lullabies

John Legend has found his newest audience: his four children. The singer-songwriter, known for being a devoted father to his four children with his longtime wife, Chrissy Teigen, is now using his music to teach them life lessons.

That’s the revelation he made on the most recent episode of Raising Good Humans with Dr. Aliza Pressman, where he discussed his newest album of lullabies, My Favorite Dream. Released earlier this summer, the album features backing vocals from his two eldest children, Luna and Miles. It serves as a melodic testament to the values Legend and Teigen hope to teach their children.

“I talk a lot about family and togetherness and the idea of us being there for each other through good times and bad,” he told Pressman. “A lot of the messages in the songs are about that. When I started the album, I just sat down and brainstormed. What are the things Chrissy and I like to talk to [our children] about? What are the issues we face? What’s the fun stuff we talk about? How do we comfort them when they’re not feeling okay?”

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the EGOT winner was inspired by his children to create the album. “I was very directly inspired by parenting and being around my family,” he said. “We released the album in August and my kids still listen to it all the time. And hopefully it’s a part of a lot of other people’s lives now, too.”

Inside the John Legend-Chrissy Teigen Household

Legend and Teigen, who married in 2013, have both been very open about their parenthood journey since their first child was born in 2016. Their family includes Luna, 8, Miles, 6, Esti, 19 months, and Wren, 14 months.

In September 2020, the couple faced the loss of their son, Jack, at 20 weeks of pregnancy. At the time, Teigen described the loss as a miscarriage, though she revealed in 2022 that she had come to realize the pregnancy loss was an abortion

Despite the ups and downs, the “All of Me” singer shared that he and Teigen tackle the challenges of parenthood together—managing their 6-year-old son’s recent  Type I diabetes diagnosis while navigating the everyday dynamics of their older children.

Still, Legend finds time to enjoy the journey. “I think we’re really learning, both Chrissy and I,” he said. “If we all approach it as ‘we all can learn from each other and exchange great ideas together,’ I think we’ll all be better off.”
