After Josh Peck and Ben Soffer delivered that tear-inducing Drake & Josh reunion, the Good Guys just served up another nostalgic treat: a Disney/Nickelodeon crossover featuring That’s So Raven star Raven-Symoné and her wife Miranda Maday (with whom she hosts a pod of her own) and boy, did they have a lot to discuss. Here, we give you the highlights.
On her own podcast, Tea Time with Raven and Miranda, Raven admitted that she thought boys had a particular reason for watching That’s So Raven. “I felt like boys watched the show because I had big boobs,” Symoné said on the December 5 episode. “They came for the boobs and stayed for the comedy.”
But ever since she made that statement, Raven says people have been telling her otherwise. ”I was in Atlanta. I was walking down the street and this guy came up to me, and he’s like, ‘I love you, and I just want you to know you’re incorrect.’ And I stopped and said, ‘What are you talking about?’ And he goes, ‘That’s not the only reason I watched you.’”
Miranda added, “That became a big thing. A lot of people were actually saying, ‘Raven, we never watched the show for your titties. We watched the show because we loved you. And we loved your comedy. Don’t sell yourself short.’”
Raven said she was touched by the outpouring of love for her show, although she seems to still think her breasts had SOMETHING to do with it. “I know what they were looking at,” she joked, but added, “Thank you social media for standing up and proving me wrong-ish,” she said.
Raven and Josh bonded over being self-conscious about their weight when they were on TV, admitting that it’s still something they worry about, as does Ben. After discussing what clothing they prefer not to wear, Raven shared her “exposure therapy” approach.
“One morning I woke up, I put on some spandex booty shorts, a wife beater, and my arms were exposed, my legs were exposed. My wife was like, ‘What are you doing?’ And I’m like, ‘Trauma therapy, babes. Exposure therapy, I am working to be comfortable with myself by showing my arms and my legs. It’s a muscle to get yourself used to taking your shirt off. I dare you, Josh, for one week, randomly throughout the day, in your car, at your house, take your shirt off, and then put it back on.
Ben had another confidence-building tip. “All you gotta do is go to a spa or a steam room and watch these 75-year-olds just go full dick out and walk around. And then you’re like, ‘What the hell am I worried about? They don’t care about me. I don’t care about them!’”
Growing up on a TV set meant that Raven and Josh didn’t have conventional grade school experiences. Comparing notes, it sounds like Disney had Nickelodeon beat for on-set tutoring. While Raven said she had a “wonderful teacher,” Josh said that his on-set teacher got “steamrolled by the higher ups.”
“They were like, ‘Yo, we don’t want to have to spend three hours of his nine-hour workday schooling him,’” explained Josh.
Raven pointed out that it was “literally the law” for child actors, “but okay…”
Instead, the folks at Nickelodeon sent Josh to a one-day “high school” program. “It’s in a shady office in Silver Lake. So you show up, and he goes, ‘I’m gonna give you a test.’” Josh called the test “a GED for people who wouldn’t be able to pass the GED.” And that’s how he completed his education.
Not a good look, Nickelodeon!
Last but not least, Josh shared an adorable anecdote about one of the first times he interacted with Raven—not at a Hollywood event like the Kids’ Choice Awards, but at a sushi restaurant. “I must’ve been, you know, 16, 17 years old,” he explained. “I’m mid-weight loss, at a weird time. Long sideburns, 260, okay. And we happen to be at our local sushi haunt. I see Raven there. Raven and I were chatting and she looked at me and said, ‘Have you ever had green tea tempura fried ice cream?’ And I said, ‘No.’ And she was like, ‘SIT DOWN,’” laughed Josh, adding, “It was a dream.”
Oh, to be a teenage celebrity sharing green tea ice cream with another teenage celebrity. What a world! There’s something wholesome and delightful about the image, right?
