10 Shows Like Shameless: Wild, Messy, and Seriously Binge-Worthy

Whether you’ve never truly dipped into the chaotic world of “Shameless” or you’ve rewatched it enough to feel like you’re actually a Gallagher yourself, we’re gonna take a second to revisit what the show is all about before we jump our list of recs. This way, you’ll have a better idea of what to expect from the shows on the list. Trust us, we didn’t come to disappoint.

What Is The TV Show Shameless About?

Shameless is an uncensored rollercoaster that follows the Gallagher family as they struggle through addiction, poverty, and unconventional loyalty. Set in the south side of Chicago, Frank Gallagher (played by the iconic William H. Macy) is a selfish alcoholic father of six Fiona, Debbie, Carl, Liam, Ian, and Phillip (Lip) but he’s no role model father at all. With Frank either knee-deep in his addiction or out somewhere causing chaos, Fiona (the oldest daughter) is left to basically raise her siblings by herself.

Fiona’s not entirely alone, though. She’s got her ride-or-die neighbors, Veronica (V) and her boyfriend Kevin. But, even with a support system, life is still full of challenges. Each sibling has their own struggles to deal with, from addiction and criminal activity to failed relationships and mental health.

At the end of the day, one thing’s clear: the Gallaghers’ loyalty is unmatched. They’ll always show up for each other even if it means committing insurance fraud or digging up bodies (hey, loyalty looks different for everyone, right?!?).

Fans love “Shameless” because it’s REAL. Raw, gritty, and unapologetically honest. There’s something everyone can relate to: life can get sh*tty, but there’s always hope, love, and laughter somewhere on the other side.

Looking for something that gives you all those same feels? We’ve got you covered. Let’s look at some TV shows that remind us of those chaotic (but lovable) Gallaghers.

What Shows Are Like Shameless?

Shameless (UK Version)

We couldn’t start this list without giving a nod to the OG “Shameless” that premiered in the UK years before the US version made its debut. As you probably expected, this series looks at the Gallaghers’ dysfunctional lives as they deal with all of life’s challenges.

While they are two sides of the same coin, “Shameless” UK is its own unique series. There are different plots, themes, and, of course, settings. With endless back-and-forths from fans trying to decide which version is the best, you’ll have to watch the UK version to decide for yourself. Either way, both versions of Fiona would’ve definitely benefited from this episode of Recovering From Reality about setting boundaries with family.

Where to Watch: Hulu, Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video

The Bear

If you want more Jeremy Allen White (Lip from “Shameless”), then “The Bear” is a must-see. Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto was a young and upcoming chef in one of the world’s most prestigious restaurants. That was until his brother suddenly passed away, and he had to head back to Chicago to run his family’s failing sandwich shop. Not only is this a huge setback, but he’s also forced to face some old demons.

Just imagine it as an alternative universe where Lip ventured out of the south side to become a young and successful chef but still deals with the same hectic family life. It has all the dark humor, fierce loyalty, and tense moments you saw Lip dish out in “Shameless.”

Where to Watch: Hulu, Disney+

Weeds

If “Shameless” drew you in with humor and dark themes, “Weeds” will keep you just as hooked. This show follows Nancy Botwin, a suburban widow who decides to start selling marijuana to keep her family afloat and maintain her privileged lifestyle.

Even though this endeavor started as something she did as a side gig for close friends and acquaintances, it quickly became her full-time job. This series is edgy and funny, and it gives off that same messy but lovable family vibe we miss from “Shameless.”

Where to Watch: Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia

Here’s a dark comedy series you don’t want to miss! When you’re craving twisted relationships and quick-paced dramatic storylines, “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” hits that sweet spot. This series follows a group of self-absorbed friends as they run an Irish bar, “Paddy’s Pub,” in Philadelphia.

But, to keep Paddy’s Pub in business, this friend group has to do some serious scheming to make their money’s worth. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, your jaw will drop ya know, everything you wanna experience with a sitcom. Plus, it’s now the longest running live action sitcom, so you know it’s got to be good!

Where to Watch: Hulu, Disney+, Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV

Curb Your Enthusiasm

If you’re a fan of the way Frank Gallagher was able to find humor in socially awkward (or even straight-up cringy) moments, you’ll LOVE Larry David’s “Curb Your Enthusiasm.” Larry plays a fictionalized version of himself as a semi-retired TV writer and producer who, unfortunately, has no social awareness or filter.

While this series isn’t focused on family like “Shameless,” it does share that same boundary-pushing comedic aspect that we know and love.

Where to Watch: Max, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV

Skins

“Shameless” is so relatable because of its uncensored portrayal of chaos, and “Skins” gained popularity for that exact reason. Set in working-class Bristol, this series follows a group of teens navigating those trying teenage years. But we’re not talking about sneaking out and staying up late we’re talking about love, drugs, and rebellion.

It tackles genuine topics that some TV shows will skip right over, like mental health, addiction, and family trauma. Hmmm, sound familiar? Not only is it authentic, but it’s also super emotional and thought-provoking. You’ll be obsessed as soon as the first episode.

Euphoria

“Euphoria” is like the modern, trendy version of “Shameless,” minus the whole older sister having to raise her siblings thing. Both shows give us a real, unfiltered view of drug addiction and how it impacts the people around you.

Rue is a high school student who, after tragically losing her father, turns to drugs to cope. She’s got a whole team behind her leading her to recovery (along with a handful of friends dealing with their own love-triangles and criminal endeavors), but does she even want to get better? Guess you gotta watch to find out!

Where to Watch: Max

The Righteous Gemstones

If you fell in love with “Shameless” because of the Gallagher’s deeply flawed but somehow still loveable dynamic, then you’ll definitely find comfort in the Gemstones. Centered around a corrupt and wealthy family running a megachurch, “The Righteous Gemstones” is packed full of dark humor, scandalous situations, and characters who will do anything to maintain their power.

Where to Watch: Max, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV

Good Girls

Three suburban moms who break out of their normal, dare we say, boring lives to step into the life of crime? Yeah, sign us up. “Good Girls” has that perfect blend of comedy and drama in a way that we thought only “Shameless” was capable of.

With the main characters making questionable decisions and reaping what they sow, you’ll almost feel like their characters and storyline came straight out of “Shameless.” It’s full of heart, humor, and lots of tension.

Where to Watch: Netflix, Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video

Eastbound & Down

After former professional baseball pitcher Kenny Powers got wrapped up in stardom and fame, his ego got the best of him. From drug use and self-destruction ive to redemption and family, Kenny has to figure out who he truly is outside of baseball.

Like Frank, Kenny in “Eastbound & Down” is a character you can’t help but love… somehow. We imagine that in another life, Frank and Kenny are definitely besties. Speaking of men being vulnerable, check out this episode of Beyond The Mat for a much bigger, important discussion about this topic (that’s actually super important, all jokes aside.)

Where to Watch: Max, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV

Which one of these series are you binge-watching when you want that edgy and dysfunctional “Shameless” vibe?

As much as we love Frank’s hit-or-miss humor and Fiona’s badass women-empowered attitude, we can only rewatch “Shameless” so many times before we want something new. You probably thought you’d never find a show to compare, but that was before we came to save the day with a whole list of series that will fill that Gallagher-shaped hole in your heart.
