6 Shows like Yellowstone

How will you know which show is for you? Well, it all depends on what you loved about “Yellowstone”! We’ll give you descriptions of the show & some details for comparison. This will help you decide which show is best for you.

What Show Is Yellowstone Like?

If you’ve somehow managed to miss “Yellowstone” what, are you living under a rock? Don’t worry though, we’ll catch you up.

“Yellowstone” is basically a mix of ultra high drama, family feuds, and absolutely stunning views. Picture this: the biggest ranch in Montana, a man’s man in charge (aka John Dutton aka Kevin Costner), and a family that will do anything to protect their land.

It’s a neo-Western that’s about as addicting as “Love Island,” though with much better writing. 😉 If you want suspense, serious family drama, complex characters, and plot twists, this is the show for you.

What Other Shows Are Like Yellowstone?

1883

This list would not be complete without the prequel to “Yellowstone,” Paramount Network’s “1883”. Travel back in time with the Dutton family as they embark on a rough journey to the west. This show is all about how hard it was to be a settler in 19th-century America. It’s honestly one of the best period dramas we’ve seen.

Why you’ll love it: stunning cinematography, an emotionally charged story, and intense performances from a killer cast (looking at you, Sam Elliott).

Lawmen: Bass Reeves

Did you know the Dutton family ranch is a real ranch in Montana? It’s called the Chief Joseph Ranch, and its history inspired parts of the show.

If you want a show with roots in the real world, check out “Lawmen: Bass Reeves.” It’s the true story of Bass Reeves, one of the first Black deputy U.S. marshals. Bass Reeves was known for having legendary courage. Plus, he was tenacious about tracking down criminals across an unforgiving landscape.

Why you’ll love it: It’s a western that mixes historical grit with intense action. Just like “Yellowstone,” it explores law and justice in the wild west. Plus, the beauty of the land never disappoints.

Hell on Wheels

If the power struggles in the historical aspect of “Yellowstone” are what drew you in, you should totally check out “Hell on Wheels.” The show is set in the post-Civil War era and, as you can imagine with this time period, there’s lots of drama.

The show follows Cullen Bohannon (Anson Mount), a former Confederate soldier, as he tracks down the men who killed his family while working on the transcontinental railroad.

Why you’ll love it: it’s a gritty portrayal of the American frontier with complex characters. It gives off a similar vibe to “Yellowstone” for sure!

Sons of Anarchy

Okay, so we’re going for less of a western historical vibe with this one, and more of a thematic overlap. Because while “Sons of Anarchy” certainly takes place in a different environment, it’s got the same family loyalty, power struggles, moral gray areas, and a battle to protect what’s theirs.

Why you’ll love it: the show is about an outlaw motorcycle club that seems to be getting… significantly more outside the law. There’s raw emotion, high-stakes drama, and intricate character relationships. What more could you want?

Longmire

Alright, we’re back with another neo-Western. This one blends family dynamics with a dark, suspenseful crime narrative. It follows Sheriff Walt Longmire (Robert Taylor) a year after he was widowed.

Why you’ll love it: it’s stacked with strong character arcs, incredible views, and a suspenseful story of crime and small-town politics. “Longmire” will totally become your new obsession.

The Ranch

So, if you were more into the ranching aspect and less into the genre, we’ve got a pick for you! “The Ranch” is a sitcom starring Ashton Kutcher and Sam Elliott that’s more of a comedic take on the ranching lifestyle. In it, you’ll see the dysfunctional Bennett family as they try to keep their ranch afloat.

Why you’ll love it: it’s a more lighthearted (yet still heartfelt) take on ranch life, family tensions, and what makes relationships work when things get messy.

Yellowstone is hard to get over, but hopefully these recommendations help!

We know you’ll find what you’re looking for, whether it’s the ranching lifestyle, mystery, or drama.

Speaking of drama we’ve got a podcast recommendation, too! If you’re into the profound drama of “Yellowstone”, you’d probably love Believable: The Coco Berthmann Story. It’s a modern day mystery about a human rights advocate whose entire life got called into question when she got caught raising money for a fake cancer diagnosis. If you’re into jaw-dropping plot twists and strong investigative journalism, check out the first episode here.
