Why Is It Important to Understand Yourself? Clarity Is Power
Dear Media
Self-care is a hot topic in today’s culture, and we’re so here for it. We’ve posted everything from affirmations for self-love to the best podcasts about self-care—as you can see, we’re totally locked in. But the thing is, a lot of people keep self-care kinda surface-level, right? Bubble baths, saying “no” to things that feel draining, taking nature walks—all super important, but not really getting us anywhere long-term. The tool that really makes a change? Understanding yourself.
We don’t mean knowing what your favorite movie is or your go-to take-out order by heart. We mean truly getting to know your strengths and weaknesses, values, morals, triggers—ALL of it. When you understand yourself on an intimate level, your life transforms for the better. But this is no easy feat; life gets busy and we lose track of what really matters… Ourselves!
So today, we’re talking about why understanding yourself is the key to unlocking your true power. We’re not keeping it superficial, either—we’ll talk about what it is, why it matters, and steps you can take to get started. Once you know what you stand to gain, it makes you WANT to put in the work. Ready to elevate your life? Let’s get deep.

Why Is It Important to Understand Yourself? Clarity is Power
When you sit back and think about whether you truly understand yourself, are you nodding your head or shrugging your shoulders? It’s easy to think you’ve got it all figured out, but chances are you’re not looking at the full picture. (And we say this with ALLLL the love.) It’s more than knowing your quirks, flaws, likes, and dislikes.
Instead, it’s challenging yourself to show up in ways you haven’t before—in all the ways that really matter. But in order to know how to do that, you have to know what understanding yourself really means. So before we dive straight in, let’s talk about it! Trust us, getting a clear perspective on things is just as important.
What Does It Mean to Understand Yourself?
Understanding yourself means really knocking down those walls to figure out who you are when nobody’s watching, throwing out opinions, or trying to fit you into a box. It’s having awareness of your thoughts, emotions, behaviors, and values, and knowing the “why” behind it all. From this, you start to notice these little patterns—like how you show up in relationships with others, to what habits you fall into when your mental health is in the gutter.
It also means being totally honest with yourself—real, raw, and unfiltered. Like, what are your emotional needs? And why do you self-sabotage sometimes instead of accepting that things can just… be good? (Hard truths, soft delivery—you know the vibe.) Basically, you need to stop ruminating on what you can’t control, and start focusing on what you can.
And we get it… There’s a LOT of self-acceptance that comes with understanding yourself, but that’s what makes it so important! Once you finally get to that place, you move through life with clarity and intention. And that’s really all we want, right? It’s the foundation for self-trust, better boundaries, healthy relationships, and true confidence. Listen to this episode of Life with Marianna for a deeper dive on this!
Now that you know what understanding yourself means, let’s talk about why it’s important and how it can transform your life. Are you excited? Because we definitely are. Let’s dive in.

What Is the Importance of Understanding Yourself?
Unlocking Emotional Intelligence
At its core, emotional intelligence means understanding and being aware of your emotions—while also being able to read and respond to other people’s emotions, too. But let’s get selfish for a sec. When you’re aware of how different things make you feel specific emotions, YOU’RE in control. Kind of like what this episode of The Bossticks discusses.
No more unproductive outbursts or back-and-forths with yourself (or others), you choose how to react. It’s basically like quieting that part of your brain that wants to scream when something hurts your feelings, or shut down when you feel defensive. You know why things impact you the way they do, so you can react accordingly.

Leveling Up Relationships
You know the phrase that’s like, “You can’t love someone else until you love yourself?” The same goes for understanding. But here’s the thing: We’re not talking about why it’s important for other people that you get to know yourself. We’re being SELFISH right now, remember? This is all about how you can benefit.
You can’t set boundaries, communicate your emotions, or ask for what you need if you don’t even know what you want or how you feel. You deserve healthy, stable relationships—but to get those, you have to get yourself. Check out “What A Healthy Relationship Looks Like ft. Hannah Brown” from We Met At Acme for a little extra insight!
Finding Purpose Beyond the Noise
Let’s be real, playing the comparison game is the thief of joy and self-worth. Someone’s always doing something bigger and better, making it easy to feel the need to “keep up.” Plus, the weight of other people’s expectations? That sh*t is heavy. When you understand yourself, you get to know your values—not what everyone else thinks is important.
“Jay Shetty on Purpose, Growth, & Self-Discovery” from Transform says it best—truly knowing yourself is the foundation of confidence. You don’t doubt your every move, you won’t question how other people will perceive your success—you know you’re killing it. Validation is nice and all, but self-reassurance? That’s the real win. Quiet the outside noise and watch how easy it is to live a truly fulfilling life.
Crushing Goals with Clarity
We all know that feeling of crushing goal after goal, but never feeling TRULY satisfied. It sucks. The reason that happens? You aren’t inspired by whatever it is you’re doing! It’s impossible to know what motivates you until you understand yourself. Reach in, find out what sets your soul on fire, and then start making moves.
This is why SO many people struggle with getting (or staying) motivated. After all, how can you be if you don’t really care about the goal you’re chasing? When you finally figure out what it is that gets you excited, starting fresh can feel rough. But that’s yet another benefit of getting to know yourself—you view challenges as opportunities because you know you’re capable.

Living More Authentically
When you take time to truly understand yourself, you stop performing and just start being. You learn to appreciate everything that you are—values, beliefs, motivators, dreams—unapologetically and authentically. Think of it this way: You should live a life that past versions of you would be proud of. Suuuper deep, but so important.
And honestly? That kind of energy RADIATES. It attracts the right people, opportunities, and ultimately, the peace you’ve always wanted. Understanding yourself isn’t just self-help talk; in the long run, it’s the blueprint for living a life that feels good.

How to Understand Yourself Better
Journal Without Rules
Journaling isn’t just putting pen to paper in your WWS journal. Instead, it’s how you connect, reflect, and make sense of everything that may be cluttering your mind. It also feels like once you start writing, everything you’ve been holding in just spills out. Now, suddenly, you’ve formed a habit that helps you track your thoughts and growth.
Practice Mindful Self-Reflection
If you’re not regularly self-reflecting, your sense of self and safety is taking a huge hit. Even worse? You probably don’t even realize. When you stop and take a sec to reevaluate your emotions, thoughts, and behaviors, you can get to the “why” behind the “what.” And when you figure out these answers? Your confidence, decision-making, and well-being flourish. This isn’t just personal growth, it’s life-changing.
Seek Feedback from Trusted People
The people who love you know you best—sometimes even better than you know yourself. So basically, this makes them a goldmine for perspective. They see the good parts, the not-so-good parts, and everything in between. At times, all it takes is a little outside-looking-in to understand who you are without a little internal bias.
And hey, that includes the good stuff, too! We all have strengths that a lot of us can’t see. Take the good with the bad and use it to grow. Oh, and check out “It’s All About Perspective” from The World’s First Podcast to feel a little more seen.
Try New Experiences
Life is allllll about getting out of your comfort zone and trying new things. How else are you supposed to learn anything about yourself? Not saying that routines aren’t important (because they def are), but so is opening yourself up to what the world has to offer. You never know when you might find a new favorite—meal, song, drink, experience, person—ANYTHING! It’s worth the risk, every. Single. Time.
Set Boundaries and Notice Your Reactions
Whatever you do, stop letting other people set your boundaries for you. YOU are in control of your life, and that includes figuring out where you want to draw lines in the sand. The other half of setting boundaries is tracking reactions. How do you feel when those boundaries are respected (or disrespected)?
Your personal space, time, and emotional well-being are some of the most important things you have. Don’t lose sight of that by trying to be a people-pleaser.
