A relationship can hit so many highs—it can be exciting, inspiring, empowering… the list goes on. But if your partner is emotionally unavailable? Something will always feel a little off. And, like “Match Maker Shares All the Secrets to Finding the Right Person” from House Guest talks about—you’ll wonder if that spark is butterflies or anxiety.

Plus, think about all the things that tie into emotional intimacy! Openness, communication, empathy, responsibility—it’s easy to see how a relationship can struggle without it.

Before you spiral too far into your own thoughts, this doesn’t mean your relationship is doomed! If you (AND your partner) are willing to put in the work, it’s sooo easy to spot the warning signs and patch things up ASAP. (Which, BTW, is the difference between a boyfriend and a husband.)

So… how do you know if what you’re dealing with is an emotionally unavailable partner? To get the big picture, we’re diving into allll the telltale signs. We’ll talk about what the concept means, how to spot the signs, and how to deal with things moving forward. It’s time to bridge the gap before resentment grows.

Signs Your Partner Is Emotionally Unavailable

10 Signs Your Partner Is Emotionally Unavailable: The Soft Truth

When it comes to dating, you’re bound to meet people with different attachment styles, love languages, and emotional responses. But that’s the fun part… until you run into someone who’s emotionally unavailable. Then you’re left asking, “Do I Like Him or Do I Hate Myself?”

It doesn’t mean it’s time to throw in the towel, though! It just means you need to know where you stand and how much your partner is willing to actively work on their avoidance. Sooo, let’s start with what it means to be emotionally unavailable. Then, we’ll dive right into the signs of emotional unavailability.

What Does Emotionally Unavailable Mean?

When someone’s emotionally unavailable, they not only struggle to connect with themselves—they also struggle to connect with those around them. And, of course, that energy shows up strong in romantic relationships. Think: walls up, feelings down, and a constant sense that you’re reaching for something that never really reaches back.

A lot of the time, the other person in the relationship thinks it has something to do with them. You’re thinking, “My partner isn’t opening up, so I have to be doing something wrong.” Other times, though, you’re searching up things like “Signs He’s Cheating on You” or “Early Signs of a Narcissist in a Relationship.”

But here’s the thing: that emotional distance isn’t always intentional.

And it shows up differently for different people. It can look like hyper-independence, being “too busy,” or just being “too chill” to get deep. Underneath it all, though, it’s about protection—avoiding vulnerability because it feels like a huge “I’m gonna get hurt at some point” risk.

Struggle to Express Emotions

We know from “Cry Your Way to Health: Discover the True Healing Power of Tears” from Coming In Hot that expressing emotions in a relationship is everything. So, if your partner avoids talking about feelings or gets uncomfortable when they open up? Definitely a telltale sign.

Emotionally unavailable people tend to fear, well, being emotionally vulnerable. So if you’re trying to get deep about feelings, they’ll minimize, deflect, or shut down.

Avoids Deep Conversations

When a relationship starts to feel too personal, emotionally unavailable partners pivot. You bring up meeting the family, and they make a joke about confusing dynamics. You bring up marriage and kids, and they begin talking about how they “couldn’t even keep a plant alive.”

It’s funny at first, and then it becomes… draining. You’re left wondering what’s going on underneath and why the relationship feels so surface-level. This is exactly why we created  “Vulnerable Questions To Ask Your Partner” and “Questions To Ask Your Partner About Yourself.” We can’t guarantee it’ll work, but it could bring them out of their shell a bit.

Inconsistent with Affection

No matter what the relationship dynamic is like, EVERYONE likes affection. And maybe your version of affection looks different! Regardless, inconsistency can be tough—and make you feel like sh*t. In “Life After Living Together ft. Joey Graziadei & Kelsey Anderson” from We Met At Acme, Joey talks about something we’re totally on board with: Relationship ABCs. AKA, “always be complimenting.”

We’re not saying your partner has to live, eat, and breathe compliments (though they def should). But still, an emotionally unavailable partner is super… wishy-washy. That hot-cold behavior usually stems from attachment issues (looking at you, avoidant attachment style), and gets confusing. Remember: it’s not you—it’s your partner’s inability to remain present.

Keeps You Guessing About Where You Stand

If ANYONE can talk about uncertainty, it’s the duo from Let’s Not Talk About the Husband. In their episode, “Ask Lisa & Harry: Rumors & Real Housewives,” they discuss navigating that “what’s next” feeling.

Uncertainty is inevitable in any relationship, but when you’re dating someone who’s emotionally distant? That feeling’s nonstop. Instead of clarity, you get confusing responses and mixed signals. It feels like you’re always trying to decode someone’s true intentions when you should just get the truth.

Fails to Make Space for Your Feelings

You try to talk about your feelings, and an emotionally unavailable partner will shut down or change the subject. Or, even worse, they’ll tell you that you’re “overthinking, overreacting, and being too sensitive.” We’ll save our soapbox on that for another post.

Nonetheless, we learned a thing or two about this from “How to Tune Into Your True Essence, Spot Your Emotional Red Flags, and Top Manifestation Techniques” from Beyond the Mat. In a healthy relationship, both partners make room for each other’s emotions—good or bad.

Avoids Responsibility for Their Actions

Accountability. Is. EVERYTHING. When someone dodges responsibility—whether it’s for how they talk to you, how they show up, or how they make you feel—it’s a huge red flag. And let’s clear something up: accountability is not the same as assuming blame.

Read that over and over again. (Or just listen to THIS episode of The Art of Being Well because Dr. Will Cole covered this perfectly.) Contrary to popular belief, you CAN own up to how your actions impact someone else without making yourself the villain. And, honestly, that’s what emotional maturity looks like.

Deflects or Changes the Subject About Feelings

Some people aren’t just emotionally unavailable—they’re actively closed off but won’t admit it. They love the idea of a relationship, intimacy, and affection, but fail to realize that connections require more.

And this time, it’s not subtle. It’s not like we mentioned earlier, where they’ll make a joke about a serious topic. They literally steer every meaningful convo away from your emotions. Over time, it teaches you to stop expressing your feelings altogether. Basically, and we say this with ALL the love… Stop begging for crumbs—you deserve more. It’s time for them to get serious or get gone.

Struggles with Vulnerability

Opening up and being vulnerable can feel hard. After all, you’re letting someone into the deepest parts of you—your fears, soft spots, and parts you don’t usually show. The difference? An emotionally unavailable person doesn’t see the “pros” of this—just the cons.

Instead of considering how much it could elevate the relationship, they’re laser-focused on how it could backfire. The best way to shift that energy? Lead by example. Listen to “What I Learned About Vulnerability from Jay Shetty, Mel Robbins, & Lewis Howes” from Dear Gabby—it’s like a crash course in communicating from the heart.

Prioritizes Independence Over Connection

When it comes to leaning on your partner, there are two extremes. On one end, you’ve got “Breaking Down High-Functioning Codependency” from Girls Gotta Eat. On the other hand, you have hyper-independence—where your partner won’t rely on you for anything. And at first, this quality’s attractive! Right?

We all love someone strong, independent, and capable. Until it feels like they’re not just turning down your help—they’re straight up refusing it. Suddenly, that independence feels like a wall instead of a strength, and that’s when it gets complicated.

Has a History of Short-Lived Relationships

Look… we’re not saying everyone’s relationship roster needs to be filled with years’ worth of wasted time and energy. That said, if your partner has a pattern of disappearing acts? That’s not a coincidence—that’s a clue.

Sometimes, like in “Leaving a Good Relationship for the Right Reasons” from Note to Self, relationships just end. It happens, obviously. But if every relationship seems to have an expiration date or there’s always a reason it couldn’t work out (but it’s never their fault)? That’s your cue to stay alert.

Communicate What You Need

Be clear about what you need and remember that your emotions and feelings hold JUST as much weight. It’s as simple as saying, “I feel disconnected when we avoid deeper conversations. Can we talk about what’s behind that?” You have to invite honesty—not force it.

And if they need a nudge in the right direction? Tell them to tune into “Charles Duhigg – The Keys to Effective Communication” from The Bossticks. It has EVERY helpful tip and tool they need.

Focus on Your Own Emotional Health

I’m Fun Now brought up a SUPER good point in her episode, “Sister-Chat Q&A”: Learning, Healing, & Letting Go.” In life, you have to focus on the “glimmers.” The good things that make you, your heart, and your life feel good.

You can’t “fix” someone’s inability to form a healthy emotional connection. But what you can do is focus on the good in yourself, your life, and what you have to offer. Easier said than done, but seriously, so worth it.

Encourage Professional Help

Like we’ve mentioned a handful of times already, what emotional intimacy ultimately comes down to is mental health. Sometimes, your partner genuinely does notice the signs and WANTS to fix things.

In this case, spending time in couples therapy can be game-changing. Or, if they’re not super down for that, individual talk therapy is JUST as helpful! Spot the patterns early on, and you save yourself a whole lot of chaos later.

Set Boundaries Around Effort

You deserve reciprocity. You deserve a fulfilling relationship. And you deserve someone who will put in the effort to show you why they’re worthy of your time. PERIODDDD. Actually, the hosts of Everybody’s Crazy cover this in “It’s Giving… Energy Checked, Boundaries Set.”

When planning out your future, an emotional imbalance can totally derail things. Protect your energy and decide what you’re willing to accept in the long term. Oh, and do it wearing this “Boundaries” Crew, because… obviously.

Know When to Let Go

We know, the thing nobody likes to hear. However, if someone isn’t willing to improve themselves and address inconsistencies, the healthiest thing you can do is let go.

“How to Know When It’s Time to Leave” from She’s So Lucky actually feels like a masterclass in choosing yourself and walking away with grace. And, if nobody’s told you: recognizing when it is time to step away isn’t failure—it’s self-respect.

Dealing with an emotionally unavailable partner can be hard—but not impossible.

Can dealing with an emotionally unavailable partner be… challenging, to say the least? Yes, yes, and yes again. Especially when you begin to take responsibility and think it’s something you did or said. But when you know the signs and how to deal with them, it becomes sooo much easier to navigate. So, take it from us: if your partner’s all for you, they’ll be willing to break those walls and open up—end of story.
