How To Improve Your Mental Health At Work

Did you know that many of us will spend most of our lives at work? Work is one of the major aspects of our lives, which is why it is so important to make sure we are always mentally healthy when in the workplace. When work is a fulfilling experience, it can significantly improve your mental health. Plus, an employee’s mental well-being can affect their work performance, productivity, communication, and their ability to maintain a safe workplace.

Stress and pressure at work can lead to a significant decrease in mental health both at work and at home. As with any job, it is inevitable to experience some stress. But, unchecked chronic stress at work can lead to serious long-term mental health problems like depression, anxiety, feelings of isolation, and more. Not to mention physical health issues, like Madeline, a patient of Catherine Gildiner (host of the Good Morning, Monster podcast) So, let’s go over some ways you can keep your mental health in tip-top shape in the workplace.

How To Improve Your Mental Health At Work

Begin your day with meditation.

Research shows that regular practice of meditation can positively impact your mental health at work in many ways. It improves memory, increases productivity and focus, and boosts your energy levels throughout the day; all of which contribute to a stress-free workday!

Start each day with a positive mindset.

Beginning each day in a positive mindset is easier said than done. But, it can have many benefits on your workday. It can reduce stress brought on by negative thoughts and help you maintain a more positive mindset throughout the rest of your day. Start your day off with a positive mindset by meditating, practicing gratitude, or doing something you enjoy.

Set realistic goals.

As with anything in life, in order to achieve success, you must set realistic goals. So, as you plan out your workday or even your work week, set small, easily achievable goals and work to achieve them at your own pace. For more tips on goal setting, check out our article about how to set clear goals in life.

Maintain a good work/life balance.

Make wellness a priority.

Make daily connections.

Research shows that there is a significant connection between making daily connections and increased mental health. Benefits of regular human interaction at work can include reduced blood sugar spikes, decreased depressive symptoms, and even decreased cardiovascular issues. Alternatively, little or no social interaction at work can lead to feelings of anxiety, social isolation, and a decrease in overall mental health.

Get plenty of sleep.

Research shows that an irregular sleep cycle is directly associated with increased mental distress. To improve your mental health at work, be sure to get to bed by a reasonable time and get at least 7 hours of sleep each night.

Eat a healthy diet.

In a study on the connection between diet and stress, results showed that diet has a direct effect on mood, productivity, and focus throughout the day. So, not only can eating a healthy diet made up of essential vitamins and nutrients improve your physical health, it can improve your mental health, too!

Exercise often.

Exercising for mental health can have many benefits on your overall life, including at work. Exercising reduces anxiety, stress, and depression. And, it can improve cognitive functioning, productivity, and mood throughout the day. Incorporating just a few workouts into your schedule each week can make a huge difference in your overall mental health.

Tidy up your workspace.

Research shows that those working in a cluttered or messy work environment tend to experience more stress throughout the day. But, those who work in a clean and tidy environment tend to be more productive and make fewer mistakes.

Make time for friends and family.

When battling mental illness or low mental health at work, it’s important to reach out to your friends and family for support. Surrounding yourself with positive people is a great way to improve mental health as well as ensure that you have a good support system in times of need. Not sure which friends to reach out to? Read this article to help you decide which of your friends are true ride-or-die BFFs

Take breaks often.

To avoid getting overwhelmed and overly stressed at work, be sure to take small breaks often. Small breaks are a great way to clear your mind and avoid getting burnt out too quickly. As you take your breaks throughout the day, try to incorporate some nature. Research shows that contact with nature throughout the workday can reduce stress and anxiety and increase efficiency and focus.

Practice gratitude.

According to this research, practicing gratitude is directly linked to an improved outlook on life. And thus, reduced stress, anxiety, and depression. To practice gratitude, you can keep a gratitude journal, give thanks through meditation, write thank you notes, give a gift to a friend, and more!

Use healthy lighting.

Working in a poorly lit environment can have significant negative effects on your mental health. From increased likelihood of developing seasonal depression to eye strain, headaches, and fatigue, artificial office lighting could be contributing to increased stress at work. Try to always work in a well-lit environment with as much natural light as possible.

Take social media breaks.

Spending long amounts of time on social media has been linked to increased stress and anxiety throughout the workday. To avoid this extra stress, try taking frequent social media breaks. Depending on your needs, these breaks can be for just a couple of hours up to whole days or weeks.

Be open-minded.

Being open-minded to spontaneous plans and new ideas throughout your workday can improve your mental health in many ways. Not only can it increase your chances of making new friends and participating in fun activities, but it can also present the opportunity for learning how to complete tasks more efficiently. All of these things contribute to a happier and healthier overall outlook when at work.

Find a creative outlet.

To reduce stress at work, try to find a fun and creative outlet outside of work. This could be your favorite hobby, painting, creative writing, gardening, and so on. Not sure how to apply your talents? Try one of these hobbies that can help you earn some extra cash on the side.

Do something nice for a coworker.

Creating a positive work environment is one of the best ways to improve mental health in the workplace. A great way to improve your work environment is to create a positive atmosphere by doing something nice for a coworker. You can offer to complete a task, purchase lunch, or purchase them a small office decoration.

Switch your phone to ‘do not disturb’.

Like taking a social media break, taking a break from your phone in general can also have many positive effects on your overall mindset. In a study published on the consequences of digital technology use, results showed that reduced cell phone use reduced feelings of isolation, improved symptoms of attention-deficit disorder, and promoted a healthier sleep cycle.

Laugh often.

We know it sounds cheesy, but laughter really is the best medicine. Especially when it comes to staying mentally healthy. On those low mental health days, don’t be afraid to laugh and joke with coworkers, look at funny memes on social media, or watch some hilarious reels to perk yourself up.

Improving mental health at work is one of the best ways to improve mental health overall.

When we’re happy at work, we’re so much happier at home. If you’re experiencing chronically high-stress levels at work, try to implement some of these easy changes to your lifestyle – we know you won’t regret it! Not only will these changes improve your mental health condition, but they will also make the workday pass quicker and leave you feeling excited and motivated about work, instead of tired and burnt out. It takes the smoke and mirrors out of whatever working towards and reminds us that we’re all just doing our best.

Second, there is no better way to boost your confidence than to continuously educate yourself, feel inspired, and get motivated. Podcasts are a great place to learn anything and everything. Whether it be tips for whatever we’re working towards or actual tips for gaining more confidence and better self-esteem. Many podcast hosts aim to support and cheer on their audience through their content. And we’re here for it.

Money-Saving Beauty Hacks

Give yourself DIY spa days.

Believe it or not, you CAN transform your home into a spa haven with affordable skincare products, essential oils, and relaxing music. Oh, and the HOT MESS ICE ROLLER. Learn to always set aside some dedicated self-care time to complete your expert skincare routine, and you might just save big.

Because you CAN enjoy spa-like experiences without spending hundreds at a spa. Moisturize with face masks made with avocado, honey, and yogurt. Dim the lights and meditate to fully unwind. Try waxing at home. The options to save with DIY beauty are ENDLESS.

Simplify your beauty routine.

Multi-use products are where it’s at. Look for items that can serve as a blush and lip color, or a highlighter and eyeshadow. This way you need to buy fewer products! If beauty is totally out of your comfort zone or changing your routine FREAKS you out, listen to this episode of Lipstick on the Rim about keeping it simple at the vanity!

For simple skincare hacks, beauty tips, and secrets, listen to Lipstick on the Rim with Molly Sims.

Leverage on online coupons.

Before any beauty shopping spree, hunt for online coupon codes or check store promotions and loyalty programs. You can save a lot by sticking loyal to a brand. But, you can also download Honey which automatically searches for coupons and applies them at checkout. It’s totally addicting and helps you save sooo much!

Bookmark websites like RetailMeNot and look for coupon codes before each supply shop. Drugstore loyalty programs like CVS ExtraBucks offer rewards every time you shop too. Consistently save more on your favorite beauty brands with online coupons. You get to also keep your makeup collection refreshed without emptying your wallet.

Make the most of DIY remedies.

If you love a facemask but hate both the expense and environmental impacts of grabbing those single-use plastic packages over and over again, remember you can make them at home! You can always create homemade face masks using kitchen ingredients like honey, yogurt, and oatmeal. Charcoal masks with aloe vera are good for deep cleaning pores. Oat flour and honey is great for hydration. The point is, do the mask thing yourself next time.

Swap store brands for name brands.

Compare the ingredients and quality of store-brand beauty products to name brands. Lots of times, they’re totally the same ingredients and you’re literally just paying for a name brand. So, swap the items if you can.

Money Saving Food Hacks

Money-Saving Food Hacks

Master the art of batch cooking.

On the weekends, you can plan simple recipes like soups, stews, casseroles, and freezable sides to avoid blowing money eating out or buying too many ingredients. Simply dedicate a few hours to prepping ingredients and doing all the cooking at once. Portion meals into individual containers for the freezer. On busy nights, you can just reheat a ready-made meal. It’ll help you eat healthier, too!

Embrace thrifty meal planning.

Try to dedicate time to browsing your favorite budget-friendly recipe sites like Budget Bytes, Half Baked Harvest, or Skinnytaste for inspiration. Make a meal plan for the week and shop just once with a list. Stick to your plan and cut off a good percentage off your monthly grocery bill. WHOA! Serious savings.

Power up with leftovers.

Don’t toss extras away. You can always repurpose them into new dishes while rocking The Breadwinning Housewife Apron! 😉 For example, you can take last night’s chicken and rice, stir fry it with veggies, and BAM–you now have fried rice. You can even mix something as simple as mashed potato scraps into potato cakes. YUM!

With just a bit of mix-and-match creativity using odds and ends in the fridge, you can save a couple of dollars each and every week on meals. The same amount would have otherwise been tossed or have required a totally new trip to the store, so it’s truly a win-win.

Join a food co-op or farmers’ market.

Food co-ops welcome members to purchase organic goods together directly from farmers. Plus, local farmer’s markets put you in touch with growers. By becoming a member of a local food co-op, you get weekly discounts on local produce and can also take advantage of bulk bins to portion out grains, legumes, and dry goods yourself for major savings.

Between these two programs, you could get massive savings on high-quality local produce. You can consider signing up for a weekly Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) box of seasonal fruits and veggies, too.

Magnify flavor with seasonings.

Stock your spice cabinet with different herbs, spices, broth, and condiments to take your simple meals to new heights. A splash of soy sauce or harissa can transform a basic soup. Experiment to satisfy your taste buds WITHOUT pricey add-ins.

Relying on flavor bombs rather than pre-made or out-of-season ingredients is a good way to save a couple of bucks here and there. Over time, cutting back on the excesses of convenience foods and sauces will see you having extra cash.

Money-Saving Grocery Hacks

Craft a shopping list and stick to it.

Creating a detailed list based on your meal plan is key. Take time to identify the ingredients needed for each recipe before heading to the grocery store. Then, only shop for items on your list to avoid overspending on impulse purchases. Pro tip: try to create meals that use the same ingredients!

It is one thing to craft a shopping list, it’s another thing to have the discipline to stick with it. Sticking rigidly to your list can help you lower grocery costs by a significant amount each trip. For more on how to break bad money habits such as impulse buying, listen to this episode of ILYSM about budgeting money management.

The store brand advantage.

Don’t shy away from store-brand products; compare ingredients and quality to name brands. Believe it or not babes, you’ll often find them just as good. Store brands offer significant savings without compromising quality.

Take a few minutes to compare ingredient lists and nutrition facts with name brands. You’ll often find store labels to be just as tasty for 15-30% less money. Going for generics over name brands is a great way to save money on groceries.

Leverage coupons and cashback apps.

Digital coupons and cashback apps are invaluable resources for slashing grocery bills. The rave for these benefits are still on, so get in on the action to score discounts on your favorite items.

Look up offers before shopping to avoid impulse buys and clip all applicable coupons. You can typically save $10-20 per trip with minimal effort. Staying on top of deals ensures your grocery budget goes EVEN FURTHER each month.

Watch for sales cycles and discounts.

Pay close attention to stores’ sales cycles and stock up when prices are lowest. Then, take advantage of those discounts on non-perishable items and essentials. With good timing, you can save big on staples, often up to 40% off regular prices. HOLY COW!

Avoid running low on key items so markdowns don’t go to waste. Strategic shopping habits maximize your grocery budget and help you save a few dollars.

Buy in bulk where It counts.

Bulk purchasing allows you to take advantage of great per-unit pricing. Items like paper goods, baking goods, and cooking staples fare well in bulk and are totally worth it when you use them every single day. Make the most of bulk sales or and take advantage when these items are offered at warehouse stores!

Buying larger sizes can shave 30% or more off your annual grocery spending with just a small upfront investment. You get to have a well-stocked pantry AND some cash left to indulge in other things.

13 Signs He’s Cheating on You

No relationship is perfect. Not even Uncle Jesse and Aunt Becky’s relationship. You’ll always hit rough patches and have seasons where you feel like you’re out of sync. If you’re in a healthy relationship, you and your S.O. will work together to get out of the rut and your relationship will be even stronger because of it!

However . . . if you have a gut feeling something is off and your partner is acting really strange, it could be a sign something bad is happening. Bad as in . . . cheating. When the red flags start to pop up, you might be wondering if you’re just paranoid and jealous or if something legit is going on. To help you get some perspective, we’re sharing some big warning signs that your boyfriend is cheating.

Here are some red flags that might tell you he’s cheating on you:

Signs He's Cheating On You

13 Signs He’s Cheating on You

He’s not communicating in the same way.

One of the first things to get weird when your boyfriend is cheating is communication. If you’re used to having cutesy play fights and deep late-night convos, and he’s suddenly barely answering the question “How was your day?” something is up! It could be stress or something like that, but if you have communication changes along with other signs on this list . . . girl, he might be getting his chit-chat somewhere else.

He’s unreachable a lot of the day.

Speaking of talking . . . if your boyfriend is suddenly unreachable throughout the day via text, call, and social media, that could be a HUGE red flag. He’s ignoring you! It’s like he’s avoiding you when he’s away because he wants to pretend you don’t exist. Yeah. Because he’s probably cheating.

He’s super defensive and irritable.

It’s rare that someone cheats and they don’t feel icky about it in some way. He’s probably full of guilt, stress, and anxiety because HE KNOWS what he’s doing is super wrong and it’ll all blow up at any moment. All of these emotions mean mood swings, irritability, and defensiveness that seem to come out of nowhere. He may even be picking fights with you as a way of justifying his actions.

He accuses you of cheating.

If he’s accusing you of cheating, this is a common sign HE is cheating. During this time, he’s going to be hyper-aware of all of your actions and specifically suspicious of you. He knows he’s cheating, so he thinks it’s totally possible you are, too. In fact, he’s probably hoping for it in some way, so he can pass all this on to you. So, if he starts throwing out really baseless accusations, he could definitely be cheating himself.

He’s way more critical than before.

Something else cheaters often do is become super critical of their partner. If your boyfriend is cheating, he’s feeling lots of self-inflicted insecurity. He wants to feel better about himself AND his situation by putting you down at every opportunity. If you’re S.O. is suddenly doing this, that’s a huge red flag!!! (He might as well sport this red flag bucket hat. LBR.)

He won’t look you in the eye.

Your boyfriend absolutely REFUSING to look you in the eye is another reason you might have a gut instinct they’re cheating. Again, they’re guilty and nervous, worried you’re going to uncover the secret. So, if he’s cheating, he wants to draw your attention as little as possible.

His routine or schedule has changed.

Is he suddenly spending a lot more time with friends and family? Or, maybe he’s spending more time at work or the gym? If your boyfriend’s schedule had changed a bunch recently without explanation making him way more unavailable for hangouts and dates, he might be cheating.

Signs He's Cheating On You List #1

He stops caring about things going on in your life.

If your boyfriend is essentially juggling a double life, you’re not going to be his focus. So, if he won’t pay attention to your life or needs at all, he could be reserving his thoughts for someone else. Is he forgetting about things going on in your life or refusing to engage in conversations about what’s important to you? There’s a small chance he’s cheating.

He cares about his body, hygiene, and style more than ever.

Another obvious sign your partner is having an affair is a sudden self-care obsession. If he has other behaviors that are giving sus vibes and he’s also all at once working on his psyche, dressing nice, showering more, and overall just caring more about his appearance—you’ve got a big red flag. Obviously, if he’s doing all this while also sneaking around and avoiding contact with you, you’re not the inspiration for his glow-up.

He doesn’t want sex or intimacy from you anymore.

If your sex life takes a sudden turn, it could be another sign he’s cheating. Think about it, when another girl is satisfying his needs, what does he need you for? It’s so sad, but if he’s not showing an interest in being intimate with you, he could be cheating.

I’ll note there are other reasons for intimacy issues (and other behaviors on this list)! If he’s not cheating, here’s how to restore intimacy in your relationship

He’s hiding his phone, bank info, location, and other things.

Girllll, what’s he hiding??? Is he making sure his phone is ALWAYS on him? Is he dropping his paychecks in another account? Did he stop sharing his Snapchat location? Is he silent on social media? All of these are major red flags that he’s cheating and going to a lot of effort to keep it from you.

He’s love-bombing you.

Some signature narcissist behavior is love bombing. Showering you with random gifts or acts of service may seem like an apology for all the sh*tty behavior he’s suddenly exhibiting, but it’s not. It’s manipulation. He’s trying to mask all of the unusual changes by love-bombing you.

That way, if you accuse him of cheating he’ll be like, “Are you crazy? I just gave you that Louis Vuitton bag?” to make you feel guilty and irrational. LADIES, don’t be fooled. You’ve got a super toxic relationship on your hands.

He doesn’t want to talk about the future.

If he’s cheating, he’s hoping for a future with someone else. So, if he’s refusing to talk about your relationship in a long-term way, he could have wandering eyes. If he’s not cheating, he’s at the very least questioning the relationship, and that’s worth a conversation. It might even be a  good idea to jump into couples therapy if he’s not cheating!

How To Deal With A Difficult Boss

It’s safe to say that dealing with a difficult boss is a pretty universal experience. Recently, three out of four employees said their boss is the most stressful part of their job. The numbers speak for themselves! No matter the particulars, having a bad boss can be nerve-racking and affect your mental health, as shown by this research. Your complicated boss might have shown favoritism, bullied you, had a terrible management or communication style, or displayed anger issues in the workplace. Either way, there are effective and ineffective ways to finesse yourself through any difficult situations with a difficult boss.

Having a bad boss is not ideal, for sure. But it’s also not worth quitting your job over them unless the circumstances turn extreme. Sometimes you just need to adjust a few things and put in extra effort to improve your working relationship with your boss. If you wait it out instead of declaring war on your manager, the issue might even resolve itself. Still, it’s a tricky situation. So today’s article is dedicated to dealing with a difficult boss. Keep reading to learn our favorite strategies for how to deal with a difficult superior!

How To Deal With A Difficult Boss

First, try to have empathy.

I know, this might be difficult when you’re boss is bad vibes, but it’s always best to start with empathy. Are you truly dealing with a bad boss or is your superior just another human being going through something? Is this a constant problem, or just the stress of the moment? And could it just be me that your work approaches don’t mix too well? Maybe they’re new to being a leader and haven’t quite perfected their management style yet. Research shows 85% of managers are not confident in their leadership skills. So throw your boss a bone and consider that maybe they’re overcompensating for something.

Don’t be confrontational or react with emotion.

If you’re in an active confrontation with your boss and feeling overly emotional, take a breath. Rather than in the moment fighting back, crying, or losing it, do what you can to diffuse the situation. Once you’ve gathered your thoughts and feelings, you can ask for a meeting with your boss to discuss the situation. It’s never a good idea to handle things in the heat of the moment if you’re not able to communicate effectively.

Build a relationship with your boss through open communication.

If you haven’t tried being honest with your superior about your discomfort with their management style, this might be a great option. Remember, your conversation should not be accusatory or judgmental. Instead, focus on how you feel. Ask your manager if there is something you could be doing better. Let them know your goal is to perform well for them. Explain that you’ve felt they aren’t happy with your performance and you want to do better. Start there, open communication builds relationships. If you’re able to be respectful and honest, improving your relationship with your boss is possible with a simple conversation. Talk to your boss and tell them what you think could improve your working relationship in terms of support, communication, and direction. Be clear and precise. It’s best to be straightforward from the start than to deal with a rocky work dynamic for months!

Set boundaries to protect your mental health.

Setting boundaries is a challenge, but they’re still vital for a healthy work-life balance. Especially if you’re dealing with a difficult boss! Don’t let the situation take over or affect your personal life. Leave work calls, emails, and texts for work hours, especially if they’re aggressive. Limit how much personal information you offer up at work. Make sure you appropriately communicate what tasks you can or can’t take on. We have two resources to share with you that can help you protect your well-being from a bad boss. First, learn all about how to set boundaries in THIS episode of Pretty Smart. Second, head over to our article on the best mental health podcasts to listen to some strategic advice to protect your mind from any stressful situation.

Understand their goals and motivations.

Sometimes, a difficult boss could be getting some pressure of their own. It’s possible that their manager expects a lot worse than your boss expects of you. Lucky you, some of that intensity and stress then gets pushed on you. Observe your boss and try to understand their motivations. Are they hard on you to keep appearances for their superior? Are they micromanaging their staff because they feel the need to control every detail to avoid failure? You won’t know what their end goal is until you do some research or ask them directly. So make the effort to understand their objectives and speak to their core values.

Stop their behavior from affecting your work.

Even if you’re dealing with a difficult boss who seems like the worst superior on the planet, you still have a job to do. Don’t start a war with your boss. This will only make your daily work more extenuating! It’s a waste of time and energy. Instead, choose to forgive and move on. Do your best to ignore their behavior and stay focused on your job. Only talk to them if 100% necessary and keep showing up for yourself, even when it gets tough. This will show them you’re determined to succeed in your career even if they seem set on making things difficult for you.

Make adjustments to avoid clashing with their management style.

Perhaps all you need to do is make a few changes to avoid clashing with their management style. If your boss is a micromanager, then do your best to show them you can handle tasks on your own. In case your manager is a terrible communicator, ask them exactly what they need from you and tell them what you need as well. It’s all about the small changes that can make two people be on the same page. Even the tiniest of details can suddenly improve your working relationship with your boss! Tune in to THIS episode of ILYSM to get practical advice for handling conflict at work.

Take the courage to put your leadership skills into action.

When dealing with a bad boss, your whole team can feel a little lost. Take that stressful work situation and turn it around. It’s your opportunity to shine! If you feel ready, show off your leadership skills by taking action whenever your superior fails to do so. Be the leader your team needs. It’s as simple as telling your co-workers when they’ve done a good job. Or encouraging them to take on more difficult tasks. Maybe you offer a helping hand to a coworker that looks stressed.

However, be careful not to overstep. The goal is to be helpful to your team, not competitive with your boss. You don’t want to risk getting in trouble for disrupting the work environment. All it takes is that extra self-confidence to step up as the leader! Listen to THIS episode of Real Pod where Victoria shares where confidence comes from and how to make the most out of it.

Don’t gossip about your boss’s poor management style.

Look, we know it might be tempting to vent to your coworkers about how terrible your boss is. However, bad-mouthing your manager can get you in deep trouble with other managers, negatively impact the entire vibe and culture at the office, and potentially earn you a trip to the human resources department. Don’t go around creating chaos! You need to shift your mindset and stay focused. Criticizing your boss only deteriorates your working relationship with them even further. So keep your head down and continue doing your job! If you need more encouragement on how to turn obstacles into opportunities and shift your mindset forever, head over to THIS episode of Dear Gabby.

Try to be one step ahead of your boss.

Once you feel like you’ve gotten to know your boss, you can start to anticipate and avoid potential problems. If they always ask you for data to back up your marketing plan, provide it ahead of time. If your boss is a stickler for being on time, be on time. This is especially true if you’re dealing with a micromanager! For example, don’t wait for them to ask you if you finished your last assignment. Just send them the completed deliverable and tell them to let you know if there are any issues with it.

Also, self-reflection on your work performance will help you stay ahead of your boss too! There is a really great episode of TSC: Him & Her on how to make mistakes, recover, and learn from them.

Keep your stress at bay.

Work is stressful, even with the best boss in the world. So you must take time to make sure you’re keeping yourself healthy and feeling good. Stress can seriously take a toll on your body. So practicing stress management is absolutely key to success. You can try to keep stress levels at work down by listening to music while you work, taking breaks, creating a to-do list to keep you on track, and keeping your mindset at work positive. Use your breaks efficiently too, and don’t sit and gossip with coworkers. Instead, go for a walk outside, or bring a novel to read for 15 minutes. You can even tune in to your favorite podcasts. And definitely don’t forget to practice stress management techniques at home!

Finally, if your boss is truly just being difficult and there seems no end in sight, it might be time to move on. Remember, you don’t have to be miserable at your job. And finding a boss that is supportive of you and your goals is totally possible. There’s no excuse for your boss’s behavior to be toxic in the workplace. So keep your head up and share your story with a friend, let them support you through this. And if things get unbreakable, talk to the human resources department to get advice from those within your company. Maybe they’ll deal with your boss, or transfer you to another department, who knows!

However, you can get through it. While it’s safe to say that coping with separation and divorce takes a considerable period of time, no matter how amicable the split up, you will get there. Divorce recovery is a long-term journey. That’s why you should give yourself permission to feel all the negative emotions. It’s okay to be sad, angry, and relieved at the same time! Take the blame off your shoulders and just feel. You’re allowed to wallow in your emotions as much as you need. And if you’re feeling guilty for the split up or for anything, really, take steps to forgive yourself. Have constructive talks about your emotions, and maybe journal through the healing process. Do what you need to feel ready to turn the page!

Surround yourself with supportive family and friends.

Having a support system is absolutely necessary when going through a divorce. You can’t expect yourself to go through this major life change all alone! So surround yourself with people that make you feel good. And let them help you, too! Whether it is a family member bringing you dinner or your best friend taking you out for a shopping spree, let others in. There’s no point in isolating yourself. You’ll heal faster if you stick to your loved ones!

Practice daily self-care.

Self-care is essential no matter what’s going on with your life. Still, it’s even more important when your emotions are taking on the toll of divorce! Research shows that self-care has a positive impact on your overall health and overall well-being. So we say bring on the bubble baths and spa days! You have to start putting yourself first, especially after a complicated breakup. A self-care routine can really be anything that makes you feel good. From meditation and journaling to beauty routines to yoga and breathwork, you can customize a self-care routine until it’s just what you need. The most important thing is to choose activities that help manage your stress and make you feel good.

Don’t get hung up on your ex-spouse.

I know it might be tempting to stalk your ex on social media. We’ve all been there at some point, divorced or not. But you’re shooting yourself in the foot by doing it! Research has suggested that stalking your ex on Facebook or other social media platforms can undermine your healing process. This prevents you from moving on in the long term, with an increased risk of indulging in obsessive behaviors. So please, do what you need to shift your mindset and focus on yourself instead! No creeping through friends and family either! It’s time to evict your ex from living rent-free in that head of yours.

Take a break if you need one.

Toxic productivity is real and more common than you might think. And it’s way too easy to fall for this trap when you’re going through a tough time. It can be tempting to throw yourself at work after a divorce or breakup. But resist the urge to avoid processing your negative feelings! If you need a break, take it. Stay at home for a couple of weeks. Maybe go on a solo adventure. Whatever it is that will help you reset and recharge, go for it! Avoid filling the ex from your void with other short-term distractions.

Remember the reasons the relationship ended.

It’s so easy to look back and wonder if you made the right decision. So we recommend you always remember the reasons your relationship ended. Don’t get caught looking back, fantasizing and only focusing on the good. You don’t need to get obsessive about the bad, but you do need to remember why the relationship wasn’t right for either of you. Take note and remember why toxic relationships are harmful, and don’t look back with any regret.

Set boundaries.

When you’re trying to emotionally recover from a divorce, the last thing you want to do is set yourself up for an emotional roller coaster. Let’s be real, we’ve all made the mistake of going through with a late-night booty call with an ex. However, if you’re getting divorced, this is not the time to cash in that favor girl. Trust us. You don’t need the emotional attachment. So set firm boundaries and stick to them,

Remind yourself that there’s a bright future waiting for you.

Here’s the deal. Divorce is not the end of the world. Yes, it hurts like crazy. Yes, it will make you more vulnerable and emotional for a period of time. But that grieving process will come to an end! You have to keep going no matter how tough it gets. Focus on your personal growth and your hopes for the future. If you want some guidance, then listen to our favorite personal growth podcasts! And remember, after this difficult time, you’ll be a stronger, more resilient person. You’ll be even more deserving and ready for the partner that can be your true match.

Dive into a new hobby or passion project.

Trying out new things is an effective way to keep your mind busy and away from your divorce. It’s also fun to take over brand-new projects! This can be a hobby or a passion project that you’ve pushed to the back of your mind long ago. Divorce is a life change, so treat it as such. It’s time to rediscover yourself and your passions! Maybe start gardening or writing that novel you outlined half a decade ago. Or join an art class and find some new like-minded friends! The options are as wide as your imagination here, so don’t hold yourself back from doing the things you love.

Consider joining a support group.

Support groups can be tabu. You might be embarrassed to admit that you need that level of support to begin with. But there’s a reason so many women have joined these groups while on their divorce recovery. It’s helpful to have someone who’s going through the same healing process as you. It can motivate you to keep looking forward, move on, and enjoy your life. In fact, research shows support groups for divorced women have helped them adjust to this new chapter more easily. So consider taking the plunge and looking for a support group near you!

Forgive and move on.

We all know forgiving someone who hurt you can get a little tough in certain situations. Still, if you don’t forgive your ex, you’ll find it much harder to turn the page. Holding a grudge against your former spouse will only make things messier and bitter. You don’t need to be best friends, but at least make your peace with them internally. Process the messy breakup details, forgive them forgive yourself, and carry on with your life and maybe even meet new people!

What are your strategies to speed up the healing process after a divorce or a painful breakup?

That’s our advice on how to emotionally recover from divorce! It’s a complex grieving process, but you’ll move on sooner than you think. There’s life after divorce or a tough breakup! You need to stay confident in yourself and trust the journey. I promise you’ll make it through in the end. Have you been through a divorce recently? What tips do you have for women in similar situations as you? Let us know your story in the comments. Stay healthy and put yourself first!

Stress Management Techniques At Home

We all deal with stress at some point in our lives, right? Whether it’s exam season, performance reviews at work, the ongoing global pandemic, a bad work-life balance, or even the crazy rush of the holidays. We’ve all experienced the infamous fight or flight response to stress levels! It’s the worst, let’s admit it. Nobody enjoys the body aches, the sweating, the heart racing, or the shortened breath. Rightfully so, because it can take a toll on your overall health in the long run!

That’s right, stress deteriorates your well-being. And we pretty much live stressed out these days, with all that’s going on with the world. Stress is a natural part of life, sure. But you don’t have to just take the punch, unable to do anything. There are a lot of stress relief techniques you can work with to feel good consistently! Things like keeping a healthy diet, or spending time with a loved family member.

Lucky for you, today’s post is all about stress reduction. We’re sharing our top tips to manage stress at home!

Stress Management Techniques At Home

Practice meditation.

It’s no secret that meditation is a huge tool to help cope with stress. Studies show this technique brings both long-term positive effects to your overall well-being and short-term stress relief with quick results. And there are many different types of meditations for you to try at home! From guided sessions to just music and your own thoughts, you’re bound to find a meditation that works for you. Meditation will help you be more grounded in the present and push the stressful distractions away! For more habits that can boost your happiness, listen to THIS episode of Real Pod where Victoria is joined by Dr. Daniel Amen!

Give aromatherapy a try.

Aromatherapy has a plethora of benefits for stress reduction! It’s an aroma-based treatment that uses essential oils (plant extracts that smell really nice) to activate your smell receptors and send a certain message to your brain through the nervous system. The oils then interact with your limbic system and the hypothalamus to release feel-good chemicals such as serotonin. It’s an easy and rapid way to lower your stress levels and feel more relaxed! Be sure to give it a try, there’s nothing to lose here. Worst case scenario, your house smells amazing. For more at-home wellness Allstar tricks, head over to THIS episode of That’s So Retrograde!

Do yoga.

Yoga is just another one of those stress-relief staples. It goes hand in hand with meditation and is just as popular as it! This technique is a relaxing blend of exercise, mindful breathing, stretching, and meditation. Yoga was developed centuries ago and is widely recognized as a form of mind-body medicine. It plays a key role in relieving stress and improving mental health, as well as a way to improve blood circulation, posture, flexibility, and oxygen uptake.

The best thing is that you can practice yoga at home! All you need is a cushioned yoga mat and a little of your time. There are plenty of free yoga classes on Youtube. Or you can download one of the many workout apps available in the App Store. But there are plenty of premium programs to choose from as well if you prefer live online classes or an accountability system. Think the Peloton app, Equinox app, & so much more. Pick the class that works best for your goals!

Step up your positive self-talk with affirmations.

It’s easy to get caught up in all of our negative thoughts. Still, you need to make actionable choices to shift your mindset to reach a more positive mentality. Affirmations can help create positive self talk and skyrocket your confidence. By repeating motivating sentences you can replace those negative thoughts with positive ones. Studies show affirmations are linked to our self-forgiveness, integrity, and efficacy. This helps to deconstruct stressful information in the long term. And yes, we have just the podcast to learn more about this subject! Listen to THIS episode of The Career Contessa Podcast for a deep dive into how to stop a negative thought spiral.

Do some stress baking.

Who doesn’t love a sweet treat? You probably know that chocolate has an actual effect on our happiness by now. But the process of baking delicious chocolatey treats can also have a positive impact on our wellbeing! Psychologists say baking and spending time in the kitchen helps to reduce stress and improve our mental health. It’s an activity that provides comfort and a soothing distraction from stressful thinking/situations. So if you’re feeling overwhelmed, consider taking a break and do some wholehearted baking!

Take a break when you need one.

Sometimes your body is just begging you to take a couple of deep breaths and unplug. And that’s perfectly fine. Listen to your body and mind! Dedicating time to self-care will make a huge difference in your well-being. You can put these techniques to good use during those personal moments! There’s a lot you can do to unplug and recharge your energy. Maybe you read a riveting story after a bubble bath, or perhaps a relaxing yoga flow is all you need. As you can see, you have plenty of options for relieving stress! Tune in to THIS episode of WorkParty on how to stress less and find joy in your finances for more actionable tips to manage stress.

Give yourself an at-home spa day.

Who doesn’t love a spa day, especially in the comfort of your own home? Sometimes if you’re feeling stressed out all you need is a warm bubble bath, some Epsom salts, a candle, and a little time alone. Heck, you can even give yourself a facial. Shave your legs! Dry brush! Go crazy! Whatever your self-care routine is, take it way up a notch and enjoy some much-needed TLC at home.

This one is no newsflash, but we had to include it anyhow! Studies show that physical activity plays an important part in managing stress and keeping our stress levels in check. Now, let’s keep it real. If you exercise in a way that you loathe and wish it could be over soon for the entirety of the workout, it won’t do you much good. Don’t force yourself to do a workout that feels like torture to you! With the endless amount of exercise methods available on demand (many of them even for free), there’s no need to suffer your way through it. That’ll only stress you even more! So go ahead and figure out which type of exercise makes you feel your best and stick to it!

Go for a walk outside.

A nature walk is always a great idea to decompress! A study by the University of Michigan shows that a 20 minute “nature pill”, AKA a walk around nature, can radically lower your stress levels. How? By reducing the levels of cortisol (the stress hormone) by a whopping 10% on average! This is recommended to be a daily practice: 20/30 minutes of strolling around nature to relieve stress. But the study shows that 3 times a week is enough to see a positive difference.

Listen to music.

Music is truly healing. Why, you ask? Because it complements the stress reduction effect! Studies show relaxing music decreases anxiety and lowers stress, relieving the fight or flight response. So if you’re feeling an increased stress, try putting on your favorite playlist, sing as loud as you want, dance even! Listen to upbeat music if that’s your vibe or just anything that is soothing and makes you feel good.

Listen to a mental health podcast.

Sometimes, relaxation isn’t the way to decompress. Maybe you want to dive in and feel your emotions plus explore the why behind the stress. Maybe it’s time for a little self-reflection, growth, and possibly action. Listening to a mental health podcast can make you more aware of your own struggles and give you practical tips on how to solve them. Plus, these podcasts are always supportive, and feel like you’re listening to a friend’s advice! Lucky for you, we have a roundup of the best mental health podcasts HERE.
