Flags make it easy to categorize the different issues or good signals that come up as you get to know each other. They can help you decide where the relationship is going, including whether it will last long term. Green and red flags are pretty easy to figure out. 

We already wrote a post addressing the question What is a beige flag?” But today, we’re taking a closer look at yellow flags. What are yellow flags in your relationship and what can they tell you about the person you’re dating? Let’s get into it!

Understanding what a yellow flag means can help you more than you might think. Being able to recognize yellow flags means also being able to spot potential warning signs in your relationship, which is just as important as knowing the signs of healthy relationships. Remember, we want to see you WIN! So we’d hate to see you miss the signs that are right in front of you! 

Soooo, with all that said, it’s time to dig deep and talk about what we mean when we say “yellow flag” and then give you some common examples of yellow flags in a relationship. You ready!? Let’s GO!

Yellow Flag Meaning In A Relationship

So, now think about what a yellow light means in regards to driving. You probably came up with the words “caution” or “slow down,” right? Yellow flags in a relationship carry the same meaning. They are things you should probably keep an eye on, but they aren’t necessarily deal breakers that suggest you need to break up with the person immediately. 

Yellow flags are subjective, and not necessarily good or bad. But you definitely want to keep an eye on them in case they start looking a little more red.

What Are Yellow Flags In A Relationship?

No experience with long-term relationships.

Everyone has a first, and if that happens to be you, don’t be alarmed! However, just be aware that their lack of experience with long-term relationships means there will probably be a learning curve. It’s up to you to decide whether it’s too steep for you to handle.

Very small friend group (or no other friends at all).

Are they just super selective about who they get close to or do they have some deep-rooted issues that prevent them from maintaining healthy relationships? If your significant other has very few or no friends at all, you would do well to find out why. 

Not close to their family members. 

The same goes for their relationship with family members. If they’re not close to any of them, even their parents, there might be something problematic to be aware of. This is especially the case if you are super close to your own family members. But remember, don’t jump to conclusions. Their relationship with their family could have been ruined by something entirely outside of their control.

Moving fast.

We’ve all heard someone say they “just knew” when they met the right person. And sure, many people have maintained long, healthy relationships that moved quickly in the beginning. But this isn’t always the case. If the person you are dating prefers to go 60 mph while you’re coasting at a steady 35, it could create problems down the road.

Unemployed or lack of career prospects.

There will always be exceptions, but if your beau is unemployed or stuck in a low-level or entry-level position that is well below their skills, this could be a yellow flag. Unless they are still in school, on temporary medical leave, or they are a contract worker, you should probably start paying attention to the factors at play. Do they have a legitimate reason to be where they are career-wise, or are they actually just lazy and unmotivated?

Lots of debt.

It’s important to openly communicate about finances if you see a future with the person you are dating. Debt in itself isn’t a red flag, but it’s definitely not a green flag either. Tons of people have debt and it’s not all bad. But it depends on how they came into it and how they’re addressing it. 

Trash-talking their ex. 

Ugh, this is totally one of our biggest pet peeves. Unless, of course, their ex really is a total bitch. This isn’t a total deal-breaker, but it does make you wonder if their ex actually deserves what’s being said about them. Not to mention, what would they say about you if y’all’s relationship goes south? It may be time to put on the red flag bucket hat

Half the battle is learning to spot those sneaky little commentators in your head that like to bring you down and make you think less of yourself. You knock over your coffee, and your brain’s all, “You’re always so clumsy.” Or, you start a calorie-counting app, and it’s like, “You’ll never stick to it. You never stick to anything.”

Sometimes, we’re so deep in our own negativity that we don’t even know we’re wallowing. But you can say, “Not today, brain,” and lift your mood by listening to Questions to Ask Yourself Next Time You’re in a Funk from Trying Not to Care.

Though listening to some great advice is a great first step, we know it’s not always easy to catch yourself in those downward spirals, so here are some signs to look out for:

  • Excessive “I can’t” or “never” talk that makes you doubt your greatness

  • Constant comparisons to others that make you forget your own magic.

It could be as simple as appreciating your cozy bed, whatever TV show is making you laugh, having your favorite coffee today, the sunset you saw on your walk home, the brand new bikini you bought at the store to rock during summer…purr, or that your mascara didn’t run at the gym (yep, we’ve all been there.)

Take your time.

It’s great to have ambition, but it’s depressing AF when we set goals without giving ourselves some grace or being kind to ourselves. It only leads to frustration, stress, and, ultimately, a negative mindset. 

So, instead of beating yourself up over perceived failures or mistakes, cut yourself some slack and celebrate those little wins. Self-care is one of the best ways to show up for yourself each day. It’s not just about taking care of your body; it’s about the holistic wellness of your mind, body, and soul. Developing a healthy lifestyle can train your brain to have a more positive, focused mindset.  

So, instead of moping on the couch every night, shake things up with a fun fitness class like yoga, dance, or HIIT. After sweating all the negativity away, you’d sleep better and be in a better mood. Besides, if you make this a regular thing, it’ll give you a sense of accomplishment, which will make you more confident and positive. 

You also need to feed your body and brain with healthy nutrients. So trade that large cup of strawberry milkshake from Dairy Queen for a green smoothie or that large box of Oreos you’re about to stress-eat for some fruits. 

Finally, make time every day to do one thing just for you. Give your mind a much-needed break from all the stress of work, finances, and family, and have some “me time.” Lose yourself in a book, treat yourself to a long bath, take yourself to dinner, or zone out to your favorite Beyonce album. Find humor in little things.

Life will inevitably be a lot sometimes, but you can’t go through it feeling like you want to pull your hair out every day. You can’t take life too seriously and you need to find humor in little things. After all, laughter is the best medicine. 

So, giggle at the fact you just stepped in that rain puddle. Laugh with your co-worker about that ridiculous customer that just left. That point is, just brush it off and make a joke of it! This way, you’ll become the happiest person you know. No matter how small, appreciating humor puts a smile on your face and helps you have a more positive outlook on life. 

Talk to someone.

You know how they say, A problem shared is a problem half-solved? Well, it’s true. Sometimes, a good rant is all you need to shift your negative mindset to a positive one. Now, speaking to someone doesn’t necessarily mean you need therapy (but don’t we all?) It simply means you should find a trusted person to talk to who can give you unbiased advice and feedback.

You could schedule coffee with your BFF to get everything off your chest. Or, speak to your parents during Sunday dinners. It could even be your ultra-wise gym instructor or co-worker. If you can’t find anyone to confide in, you could always join an online support group and vent for laughs and virtual hugs.

However, don’t hesitate to schedule time with a therapist if that’s what you feel you need. They can provide an objective view of the areas of your life you’re struggling with.

You feel insecure and unheard, and it’s like your soul is slowly shrinking like a withered flower with each red flag swept under the rug. Between late-night tears and overthinking, you lose your self-esteem and overall glow before you know it.

Sending hugs and kisses to all of you who may be in a toxic relationship right now and feeling stuck. We understand that feeling of knowing you need to leave but still clinging to it like your fave discontinued tube of lip-gloss. So, why is it so hard to leave even when you know you deserve better?

One reason could be that you’re scared of the unknown. We know we’re speaking for most women when we say that leaving a relationship and stepping into the dating pool again is scary AF! So, we sometimes feel it’s best to tug out our current one, no matter how unhealthy. 

Another common reason is what we call the One more chance times a million syndrome. This is where we think our S.O. is irreplaceable and “the only one” for us. We hold on to the hope that things will change, so we keep giving chances to someone who repeatedly proves they can’t step up. It’s a cycle that can be difficult to break. 

Past trauma can also prevent you from leaving a toxic situation. If unhealthy relationships have been all you’ve known, it can feel impossible to break the cycle. If you’ve been experiencing frightening manipulation tactics, disrespectful behavior, or even physical abuse, please know that it’s never your fault. You don’t have to tolerate it!

Being with someone who exhibits signs of a narcissist, like gaslighting, stonewalling during arguments, or never accepting responsibility will leave you feeling on edge and walking on eggshells. And, leaving might even be harder when you’ve been made to feel like nothing without a man’s approval. But, you can walk away from him and survive it. Disrespect

No relationship is perfect. But basic respect should be the bare minimum. And, anyone who can’t give that to you simply doesn’t deserve your time or energy. Period!

The fact that he isn’t remorseful is a clear sign that he’ll do it again. After all, once a cheater, always a cheater—even though it doesn’t apply to everyone. Your mental health doesn’t need the emotional rollercoaster that will come with that.

You shouldn’t have to beg for basic TLC, attention, respect, or affection before you get it. Plus, no one wants to constantly sacrifice their own joy and confidence to keep the peace. So, it may be time to say, “Boy, bye!”

Emotional Unavailability

Can we address the elephant in every exhausted girl’s room? Emotionally unavailable men. OMG! These types of men can be exhausting with their super dry texts, avoiding deep talks, and never compromising or apologizing. 

No matter how you try to sugarcoat or tolerate it, you’d eventually get tired of getting scraps of attention only when it suits him. So, you need to walk away. But, that’s total crap, because growing older doesn’t have to mean “getting worse.” I mean, look at Anne Hathaway? Sandra Bullock? JLO? If these ladies can age like fine wine, so we can we.

Your 40s, 50s, and beyond can be some of the most exciting times of your life if you shift your focus to appreciating the aging process and challenging these stupid stereotypes. Because what we think about ourselves affects the way we feel. 

In fact, worrying about the fact that we’re all growing older (which is pretty inevitable) can make you age faster. Um, NO THANKS! A study by psychologists at Yale University proved this, stating that older people with more positive mindsets about the aging process lived 7.5 years longer than those with a negative mindset. 

It sucks how people act like life is over once you’re a certain age. But we’re here to tell you that the best is yet to come. In this guide, we’re sharing simple tips on how to shift your mindset about aging and embrace the process. The best is yet to come, guys!

Take up meaningful hobbies.

Life gets busy when we’re raising kids and working our cute little butts off. But, when we enter those retirement years and you suddenly have way more time, you NEED to embrace your creativity with some cool hobbies. This means finding an activity that fulfills you and brings you joy. You can indulge in a passion project or try your hands at pottery, painting, yoga, learning to play an instrument, or volunteering in your community the options are endless.

Finding hobbies you love is a great way to stay engaged, keep your mind sharp, meet new people, better your quality of life, and feel excited about each new chapter. You’ll feel younger just by having fun with these activities.

Be grateful. 

One of the easiest ways to have a positive energy and attitude towards aging is by being grateful. It may sound cheesy, but being thankful can help promote positive aging. We sometimes get so caught up in what we don’t have or what we wish was different that we forget to pause to reflect on the things that are fricken amazing about our life. 

You can start by keeping a gratitude journal to jot down what you’re grateful for daily in your SLAY ERA notebook. Don’t worry about it sounding corny. Just write down the littlest, simplest, and funniest things you’re thankful for (it could be the delicious latte you sipped at your favorite cafe.)

If you do this often, you’ll soon realize that you have so much to be thankful for as you grow older. Suddenly, aging won’t sound so bad. Nurture relationships. 

There’s nothing more beautiful than our relationship with other people. As we age, these relationships become even more important for our well-being. Instead of wasting time stressing over wrinkles, put your energy into the people who make you happy.

Why shouldn’t we get to dream big well into our golden years? Giving yourself something to work towards, whether big or small, keeps your mind active and gives you a sense of purpose. Besides, smashing those goals reminds us we’ve still got it at any age.

Stay physically active. 

You’ve heard this a gazillion times already, so we won’t overdue it. Exercise makes you feel better in EVERY way. Not only does it lower our blood pressure and reduce the risk of age-related complications, it actually helps our mental health and confidence. 

Small amounts of daily activity, like a lunchtime hot girl walk, a 30 minute yoga session in the park, or a Beyonce dance party in your living room, can make you feel amazing. 

Learn from some aging role models. 

Sometimes, a little inspiration is all we need to start shifting our mindset as we age. And what better motivation is there than strong, sexy women ladies like ourselves living their best lives in their positive age? 

Of course, there are the obvious choices like Oprah Winfrey, Meryl Streep, Serene Williams, Reese Witherspoon, and Sonia Sotomayor, but there are so many more out there. Some are even our Dear Media family. Here are some podcast from strong, smart (and smart ass) women over 40+:

Understand where your negative age beliefs come from and tackle them. 

Embracing aging is all about caring for your physical AND mental health. Rather than continuously internalizing those negative stereotypes about aging, why not stop to trace where those beliefs started from? To be able to change your outlook on aging altogether, you need to dig deep and get to the root of the problem. 

It could be from watching some of your family members struggle with aging or losing a grandparent at a young age, or they could sneak in from watching movies where vibrant women get pushed to the sidelines once they hit a certain age. Social conditioning is REAL, ladies!

Keep a positive mindset about aging. 

Much of aging is mental. Like we said earlier, what you think is how you’ll feel. Your perception becomes your reality.
