How Toxic Relationships Affect Mental Health

Your mental health is a priority. So it’s important to pay attention to the things that take a toll on it! Given that we as humans are innately social, it’s no surprise that our human relationships are heavily linked to overall happiness and mental well being. In fact, this study found that the overall quality of social relationships is a strong risk factor for major depression. Therefore, toxic people and relationships are one of the main things that can impact your mental health.

How Toxic Relationships Affect Mental Health

So because we’ve all experienced a toxic relationship or two (or 10), today we’re diving deep into how toxic relationships affect mental health. Plus, we’ll give you tips for how to handle these negative relationships moving forward.

What Is The Definition Of a Toxic Relationship?

How do you define something or someone that’s toxic? A toxic person or relationship is typically described as one that makes you feel unsupported, misunderstood, demeaned, or attacked ( source ). A toxic person or relationship will often make you feel worse in general or about yourself. On the other hand, a healthy relationship will make you feel better, more secure, and overall joyful. Toxic people can leave you feeling down, are able to suck the energy right out of you, and can even mess with your ability to create new bonds long term.

But how do you spot the signs of a toxic relationship? The most obvious ones are verbal abuse, any physical aggression, reluctance to set boundaries, emotional abuse, and an overall lack of support. However the signs might be less obvious. For example, negative relationships are likely to make you feel like you’re in a constant state of stress or that you’re always emotionally drained. You might feel as if you are walking on eggshells every time you are with a toxic person. Honestly, it’s not fun to be in a toxic relationship because your energy is being trained rather than refueled.

Toxic relationships can isolate you from other more empowering & supportive relationships.

When you’re constantly in a negative environment, suffering from stress and emotional abuse, you might put a wall between you and everyone else. There may be times you’re preoccupied with drama in the toxic relationship, too upset to spend time with others, or simply drained and not feeling up to it. Toxic relationships take up a lot of mental space, which is a limited resource. If you feel bad, you won’t be in the mood to protect and invest in your existing bonds. This isolation actually makes everything worse. Disconnecting from others will lead to more anxiety and loneliness.

Negativity becomes part of your everyday life.

Toxicity sends your mind into a negative spiral. You carry the weight of toxic relationships everywhere you go. That negative energy is tough to shake off and can impact you throughout the day. Being in a negative state of mind will make you view the world generally from a more negative perspective. You’re also exposing yourself to consistent negative headspace trauma. If you are struggling with negativity, give a listen to the following episode of The Femails with Lauren McGoodwin to find some comfort: How To Stop a Negative Thought Spiral.

You may experience lower self esteem.

A toxic person might constantly put you, your actions, and your feelings down. Eventually you might start putting yourself down too. Being treated poorly leads to a poor relationship with yourself. And suddenly you may experience less confidence in your abilities, your dreams, and your instincts. Inner strength is important to cultivate and protect. If toxic relationships put your inner strength and security at risk, it’s time to let go of the relationship.

Negative relationships can lead to or worsen anxiety and stress disorders.

Toxic relationships create mental strain and stress, and even all out health problems. Our emotions and nervous systems can only handle so much. This study found that toxic relationships increased anxiety and stress disorders, while health relationships decreased anxiety and stress disorders. It’s crucial to spot the early signs and symptoms of toxic relationships related to anxiety and stress. If you want to learn more on how to change toxic thinking and reduce anxiety or stress, this episode of The Art Of Being Well with Dr. Will Cole does an excellent job of covering the topic. It guides you through a five-step plan to eliminate the causes of anxiety, depression, and stressful thoughts.

You neglect self-care practices.

Toxicity and negativity feed off each other. Negative emotions are capable of tearing down your more healthy habits. If you feel bad because of a toxic person in your life, you might stop taking proper care of yourself. This includes neglecting your self-care routine, sleep habits, workout schedule, or even personal hygiene. We all can relate to the girl eating a pint of rocky road ice cream in sweatpants from yesterday after a rough break up. Proper sleep, an exercise routine, and healthy diet all impact your physical and mental health and overall wellness. Knowing how to cope and practice self-care is key when dealing with negative relationships and emotional abuse ( and especially abusive relationships ).

Here is an amazing episode of Looking Up with Dr. Deepika Chopra that covers this subject and shares tips on coping and navigating mental health issues: Learning to Cope with Mental Health Advocate and Founder of PYM, Zak Williams.

Being in constant fight-or-flight mode can trigger health conditions.

Even though this post is about how toxic relationships affect mental health, they can have a harmful impact on your physical health as well. Experts have concluded that toxic relationships can lead to an increased risk of developing heart problems, higher blood pressure and blood sugar levels, and a weakened immune system. This is because of the constant stress your body is put through when in fight-or-flight mode, a state very common when around toxic people.

How To Handle Toxic Relationships

Accept the situation and seek help.

First, practice self-awareness and discernment. What are the signs that a relationship is toxic? How does that toxic person make you feel? Could your behavior also be engaged in a toxic pattern? These are the questions you should ask yourself in order to fully accept the situation. Once you are able to recognize you are stuck in a negative relationship, it is time to seek help. Start by looking for support from your family members, your friends, your confidants. Also, consider going to therapy to get help with processing the trauma and emotional abuse you went through.

Tell the other party in the toxic relationship how you feel.

If you notice a negative shift in a relationship towards toxicity, voice your concerns with your partner immediately. This is the only way to work things out! Speak your truth in a respectful and calm manner, explaining what behaviors are hurting you. Don’t attack the other person. You are trying to reverse toxic relationships, not get caught up in a negative dynamic. If the toxic person is your current partner, think about attending couple’s therapy. Assess the situation and act accordingly. This episode of The Skinny Confidential Him & Her Podcast gives tips on the best tactics for a healthy relationship: Tactics & Tips For A Better Relationship – Couples Finance, Sex, Parenting, Future Planning, & Limited Fights. Tune in to learn more about positive couple’s dynamics.

Set boundaries. Both for toxic people and yourself.

Boundaries are key to protecting your mental health. That’s why it’s so important to know how to set them. They set the stage for mutual respect and honest communication. By establishing boundaries with a toxic person, you are setting a strict limit for their behavior. Draw the line between what you will tolerate and what you won’t let pass. But also set boundaries for yourself. If you’ve decided not to have any more contact with a toxic person, respect your own limits and don’t be tempted to resume your relationship with them. You can learn how to set healthy boundaries HERE. We also recommend this daily mediation on boundaries from Mind. Body. No Soul.

Forgive, learn, & grow.

Holding grudges doesn’t feel good and will only hurt you even further. Hate and resentment will catapult more negative emotions and transform you into a very bitterness. The best plan of action is to forgive and let go of that toxic person. Make amends with the past trauma. Forgiveness doesn’t mean you forget what happened or try to bury it deep down. Allow yourself to mourn the relationship, reflect, and look at it as a lesson for how relationships can become unhealthy. Here’s an episode of Real Pod with Victoria Garrick that discusses how to forgive and heal strained family relationships. You can also learning more about dealing with a toxic family with this episode of Relationsh*t.

Look for stress reduction practices.

Handling toxic relationships takes a toll on your mental health. So it’s important to have a solid self-care routine with stress-reduction practices in it. A few of our favorites are meditation, yoga, long baths, gratitude journals, breath-work, any form of exercise, and listening to mental health podcasts. Take a deep dive into self-care with Whitney Port of With Whit and the ladies That’s So Retrograde.

Be ready to walk away from the situation.

Sometimes things just don’t work out, no matter how hard we try. We have to recognize when we might be fighting for a lost cause and find a way out. It can be emotional and lead to severe guilt. But in the end, you will look back and thank yourself for breaking free of a toxic relationship. It only gets better from there!

What are some of your tips for dealing with toxic people?

We hope you learned a few tips and tricks for handling negative relationships, the signs of a toxic person, and how to put yourself first. Remember, it’s important to always protect your mental health and avoid letting the energy get sucked from your life! Were you in a toxic relationship? How did you handle the situation? How To Bring Intimacy Back In A Relationship

If you’re in a long-term relationship, you may be experiencing problems with your sex life. Whether you’re encountering a small speed bump or you’re in an all-out-crisis, the lack of physical intimacy is probably causing issues in other parts of your relationship too.

When you and your partner are intimately intertwined, you feel closer and more aligned in every way! But, there are many reasons love might not be in the air anymore . . . maybe your sex drive has changed, your routine is different, or mundane day-to-day life just killed all the excitement. Is there hope to restore intimacy? Definitely!

Today, we’ll be discussing how to revitalize your sex life and restore this vital connection with your partner. Here why intimacy is important and what you need to do to get it back:

How To Bring Intimacy Back In A Relationship

Effects of lack of intimacy on a relationship

Effects Of Lack Of Intimacy In A Relationship

Lack of intimacy can have a profound impact on a relationship and on a person. (Learn what “intimacy” really is HERE.) Without a healthy sex life, partners can develop mental health problems like self-esteem issues and a deep sense of isolation. Plus, once you stop communicating about sex, a barrier develops and you may stop talking about a lot of things too

After a while, the lack of communication and connection can make partners grow resentful and question the relationship. Soon, there’s no playfulness or fun in the relationship at all. Essentially, not having sex after years of a good sex life can make a relationship feel stale and hollow.

The effects of a lack of intimacy can destroy an otherwise functional relationship, but it can also break you down as a person. Feeling lonely, unwanted, and unattractive are not uncommon when sex suddenly or slowly goes away. So, how do you get that intimacy back? Let’s cut through the myths and TikTok tips and get to the truth:

How To Get Intimacy Back In A Relationship

Flirt!

The first step to bringing sex back to a romantic relationship is flirting again. We know, we know, if there’s already resentment and bickering, this can be tough. But, take the first step. Make an effort to flirt with your partner.

Flirting could simply be complimenting them often or greeting them at the door. Or, it could involve sitting closer to them on the couch and telling them what you find attractive about them. Here are a few ideas to get things steamy:

+ Lean in and tilt your head to the side when your partner is talking to you.

+ Praise your partner as much as possible.

+ Softly touch them on the hands, hips, or head while complimenting them.

+ Laugh and make jokes to make the conversational energy more playful.

+ Make eye contact.

Build your confidence.

If flirting is difficult, it’s probably because your confidence is low. That sometimes happens when your sex life has dried up. However, taking back control of your self-esteem and learning how to build your confidence independent of your relationship can really spice things back up. As far as sex appeal goes, confidence goes a long way

Developing your confidence isn’t as easy as 1, 2, 3. We know that. So, for advice on training self-love and self-confidence, check out the episode of The Blonde Files called “Confidence, Dating Tips, & Originality” and the Him & Her episode titled “Intimacy, Self Love, Cheating, and Confidence.” If that doesn’t do the trick, we’ve got even more confidence boosting podcasts for you HERE

Show affection and respect.

It’s often been said that women need affection and men need respect in order to feel loved in a relationship. Of course, this is a generalization. But, ‌as a rule, make sure both affection and respect are present in your relationship. Because when first comes love . . . then comes a rockin’ sex life.

Show affection through flirting, bragging about your partner, giving gifts, and listening when they’re down. And, to show respect, request your partner’s input on big decisions, trust their judgment, ask for their opinion, show gratitude, and encourage them. When partners make an effort to do these things, they build emotional intimacy and put a spark back in their love life.

Use physical touch outside of sex.

Physical affection shouldn’t all take place in the bedroom. If you’ve found your sex life has really been lacking, ask yourself how often physical touch is present in other areas of your relationship. If it’s absent altogether, try adding it in anywhere you can!

Holding hands, putting your hand on their back, kissing their forehead, and cuddling are all great ways to ignite that physical attraction and allure without jumping straight for sex. (To understand the benefits of cuddling specifically, check out this episode of The Art of Being Well.) Insert physical touch into all parts of your day with your partner, whether you’re sitting on the couch snuggling or holding hands while walking the dog.

Discuss and solve barriers that are standing between you and intimacy.

Remember, as the podcast hosts at Coupleish put it, hard conversations will save your relationship. In this case, you need to acknowledge there’s a problem with your sex life and identify barriers that are keeping the two of you from being intimate.

Talking about sex will allow the two of you to be emotionally intimate with one another, which is really the first step to regaining a thriving love life. When you can trust one another and align on the reason for your intimacy issues, you can start heading toward healing.

If you’re unsure of what’s causing the lack of emotional intimacy, and, therefore, sexual intimacy, here are a few common possibilities:

+ New Parents:

If you just had a child, it’s not unusual to experience a change in your sex life. Try listening to “Intimacy & Sex after Kids” by Being Bumo or “Love, Sex, and the Magic of Being New Parents” by Coupleish.

+ Hormones and Health Problems:

There are a lot of biological factors that affect our sex drive. Learn more about in “Health Sex, & Hormones” by Good Instincts, “Sex Drive and Deep Sleep Secrets,” by the Art of Being Well, and “Why Am I Always Tired, Have Low Energy, & Low Sex Drive?” by Being Bumo.

+ Medications:

Since medications manipulate our bodies, sometimes they can have side effects that manipulate our chemical balance. Note to Self has a great episode about your sex life on anti-depressants HERE

+ Sexual Trauma:

If you have a history of sexual abuse, we don’t need to tell you how it can affect your ability to be intimate. The Heal Podcast discusses this further in the episode titled “Sexual Trauma, Learning Your Erotic Language, and Unlocking True Pleasure.

List of ways to get intimacy back into the relationship

Switch up your tired routine.

If you want to revitalize your sex life, you can’t stick with the same old, same old. Try getting a little adventurous about when, where, and how you initiate sex. This type of renewed spontaneity will probably pulse sexual intimacy back into your relationship.

However, sometimes the opposite of spontaneity is the answer. Instead of ditching the routine altogether, schedule your sexual activity like anything else on the calendar. It allows both of you to mentally, physically, and emotionally prepare for intimacy. Plus, one partner doesn’t have to feel like they’re always begging for sex. This is a great start to bringing sex back into your life!

Learn more about incapable sex drives with Lipstick on the Rim in the episode Sex, Sex, & More Sex. And, explore the concept of scheduled sex with The Papaya Podcast in her sex therapy episode. There’s great info in both of these episodes!

Communicate about what excites you.

It’s no secret that men and women want different things when it comes to sex. Beyond that, every person, male or female, has different sexual preferences! So, make sure you communicate about what your partner does that you find attractive and sexually exciting.

This will prompt them to share what arouses them as well, and you can both ensure you’re serving the other sexually in the way they want. No more assuming and waiting for the big gestures—communicate what you want and need to happen on a regular basis!

Drop resentment and expectations.

When you want to restore physical intimacy, you have to clear away resentment and expectations. Don’t do this by demanding apologies and action from your partner . . . instead just drop it. Forgive and forget, so you have room for emotional connection again.

You can hear more about how expectations will kill your relationship with the Coupleish podcast hosts. Once you stop assuming malicious intent or selfishness on the part of your S.O., you can love them better and revive sexual attraction!

Do what you love to do together.

So often, we get caught up in our day-to-day lives and forget to enjoy each other’s company. Simply, we get burned out and let it not only affect our work and mental health, but our romantic relationships, too.

If you want to bring intimacy back to your relationship, start doing what you love to do together again! Maybe you once loved hiking together or playing board games. Perhaps you used to go to concerts and try new restaurants. Prioritize all these things again! When fun, playfulness, and joy return to your relationship, usually sex does too.

Seek to understand your partner.

As we mentioned, everyone has different expectations, barriers, and preferences when it comes to sex. Maybe early on sex was easy, and you didn’t need to take time to understand your partner’s likes and dislikes. But, you should take time to learn about all the ins and outs of their sexuality now.

The better you understand each other’s sexuality, the better you can serve one another. Plus, it’ll make sex a regular part of conversation, which should help extinguish any tension surrounding the subject. You can restore intimacy in your relationship by switching things up, communicating, and understanding each other better

You can restore intimacy in your relationship by switching things up, communicating, and understanding each other better.

Sex is integral to a healthy relationship. When your long-term relationship loses its spice, it’s time to get to the bottom of the issue and work towards a solution. If you’ve tried the above advice and haven’t seen much progress, there’s no shame in seeing a sex therapist or sexologist. You and your partner deserve the best sex life ever!

How To Be Independent In A Relationship

Being in a relationship makes you feel confident, excited, and fulfilled. Whether it’s old or new, being with another person who is compatible and loving can bring a whole new level of meaning to your life. However, what happens when your relationship becomes everything to you?

It’s not uncommon for people to become so attached to their significant other that they lose sight of themselves. They’re tied to their partner in a way that’s unhealthy and problematic. This can lead to a lot of pain during the relationship . . . and after.

So, today, we’re discussing how to be independent in a relationship. It’s best for your mental health, self-esteem, and relationship if each of you maintains your own identity and holds fast to your individual values. So, here’s how to be yourself even when you’re romantically or emotionally linked to another person

How To Be Independent In A Relationship

Two independent people with autonomy being united is one of the hallmarks of a healthy relationship. However, when falling in love, it can be really easy to let your whole world revolve around your S.O.

Soon, you can become dependent, insecure, and isolated. When this happens, it can mark the downfall of your relationship and your mental health. So, you need to maintain your independence even when your tummy is full of butterflies!

What does it mean to be independent in a relationship

What Does It Mean To Be Independent In A Relationship?

When you’re independent in a romantic relationship, it means that you stay the main character of your own life! You won’t become a side character to support the growth, passions, and emotions of your partner exclusively. You stay focused on your path while sharing the joy of life with another person. Of course, that’s a bit abstract, so we’ll list some practical ways of staying independent later in the post.

Why being independent in a relationship is important

Why Being Independent In A Relationship Is Important

You never know if a relationship is forever. And, more than that, you never know if the bliss you feel right now in this relationship is forever. If you compromise your independence, that means compromising your boundaries, values, and goals. Usually, it leaves you with reduced self-worth and no sense of confidence without your partner’s approval and affection.

Without independence, you can find yourself totally without a sense of self after a few months or years in your relationship. This turns your happy relationship into a totally dreadful experience as you descend into a complete identity crisis. Plus, if the relationship ends, you’ll feel like you’re nothing without the other person.

However, you are SO valuable as an individual. You should never be so connected to another that you lose your sense of independence and self-worth. If this is something you usually fall into, don’t worry. You can learn how to be independent in a relationship by listening to this advice from the Him & Her podcast and by practicing these tips below:

How to keep your independence in a relationship

How To Keep Your Independence In A Relationship:

Prioritize hobbies that are just yours.

Though having pastimes that you share with your partner can have its benefits, you definitely need to maintain your own hobbies and interests outside of your partner. Having these hobbies will give you a sense of purpose and individuality.

So, make sure you’re always scheduling time to engage in your passions. If you need ideas on how to spend this self-care time and what hobbies to try, listen to the episode of What We Said titled “20 Ways to Spend Time Alone.”

Reflect regularly on your core values.

Whenever you’re in a relationship, it’s a good idea to check in on your core values. It’s easy to little by little compromise your boundaries and beliefs to try to make a relationship work. This is never beneficial, and only leads to heartache, as podcast host Caroline Stanbury in this episode of Divorced Not Dead admits. So, stick to what you believe no matter what!

Hang out with your friends without your partner.

You have more relationships to maintain than just your boyfriend or girlfriend. Your friends and family are an integral part of your healthy relationship. Not only can they support your partnership, but they can identify red flags and help build you up as an individual. Though it’s definitely a good idea to see those you love with your S.O., spend time alone with your social group too.

Stay focused on your goals.

Even when you’re in a long term relationship, stay focused on your own goals. Just because you commit to another person, doesn’t mean you give up on your dream in favor of whatever they’re doing. A loving relationship involves mutual support for one another’s aspirations! So, hold onto your identity by never losing sight of your passions! (Learn more about this in this episode of the Him & Her podcast.)

Set and keep boundaries.

As you form a bond with someone, your boundaries must be clear. Communicate those to your significant other and don’t yield. If you ever feel pushed, take that as your sign to leave or push back, rather than to change your values. These boundaries will always remind you of your worth and help you maintain your independence!

Allow your S.O. to be independent too.

If you’re already a codependent person, you may be compromising your partner’s independence. You could be interfering with your partner’s happiness and individuality by demanding they always be with you, gain your approval, and validate you. Your S.O. needs independence too in order for you to have a healthy relationship.

So, if you feel like you might be the toxic one, don’t feel guilty. Get help from a therapist, or start taking steps to relinquish control and encourage your partner’s independence, while you cultivate your own individuality.

Always maintain your independence in a relationship by staying loyal to yourself.

When you start to lose who you are in a relationship, that’s a big red flag. If you’re in the early stages, act fast and start establishing your own identity again. However, if you’ve been in a relationship for years and you and your partner are completely co-dependent, consider seeing a couples or family therapist to restore your individuality.

How Long Should A Podcast Be?

When you sit down to plan your podcast, there are so many questions that come to mind. The original inspiration for starting your podcast probably came from a great topic idea or unique perspective, but there’s a lot more to a great podcast than just having something interesting to say. One question you have to ask yourself is, how long is it going to be?

This question might seem small, but it’s not something that can just work itself out. There is a clear correlation between the length of podcast episodes and their success. So, today, we’ll be discussing how long your podcast should be. We’ll break down the average length we typically see and explore what makes the most sense for your podcast. Let’s get into it:

What is the average length of a podcast episode

How Long Should A Podcast Be?

There is no quick answer to this question, but we can help you get there. Your podcast episodes should be long enough to feel worthwhile and cover your topics thoroughly. However, they need to be short enough to keep listeners engaged. Most popular shows are somewhere between 15 – 90 minutes long.

The Joe Rogan Experience, the top performing podcast worldwide, averages about 2.5 hours (150 minutes) per episode. However, not all popular shows have such a lengthy runtime. In fact, other wildly successful shows like Call Her Daddy and Up First have much different lengths. Call Her Daddy is around 45 minutes per episode, and Up First is only about 13 minutes.

Why such a difference? Well, to understand how long your podcast episodes need to be, you’ll have to get to know your genre, audience, format, and more to get a perfect number. We’ll take you through each factor, so you can make the best decision for your podcast show runtime. But first, what’s the average length of a podcast?

What Is The Average Length Of A Podcast?

The average length for a typical, modern podcast episode is 38 minutes. This sweet spot is a great jumping off point! Remember, though, this is just an average. Your podcast may take less time or more time to create something marketable and worthwhile!

list of factors to consider when planning episode length for a podcast

What To Consider When Planning Episode Length:

Value

First of all, how much time do you need to create something valuable to the listener? Depending on your niche, you may need more or less time to deliver something to your followers that benefits them in some way, whether it’s teaching them something new or inspiring them for the day ahead.

For instance, if you’re hosting a historical podcast like Summer of Gold, you’ll need at least 45 – 60 minutes to cover enough content to keep things interesting. However, if you’re doing a daily meditation podcast like Mind. Body. No Soul., anything longer than 20 minutes won’t be practical for your listeners.

So, ask yourself, how much time do you need to create quality content in every episode. That number will get you close to your ideal runtime.

Scope of Topic

Similar to the value, what is the scope of your topic? Is there a ton of content to cover that you’ll never hit it all no matter how long you run your show? Or, is there a limited amount of content opportunities? Make sure the topic size fits in terms of episode length and years running.

If you plan to do a mini-series like What’s Gaby Cooking . . . in Quarantine? or Get the F*ck Out of the Sun, go ahead and pack in the content within those lengthy episodes. However, if you want to do something long lasting, keep your episodes focused on one topic at a time and feel free to make the episodes shorter. The Career Contessa Podcast is a great example of a short podcast that sticks to one theme, shorter episodes, and has been running for a really long time because of it!

Format

What is your podcast format? There are a lot of different podcast formats, and each one has different time demands. Interview or panel style podcasts likely will take the most time, because you don’t hold full control over the discussion and length of the interview.

A monologue or narrative podcast gives you more control, and creating something more concise will be easier. However, when you dive into the world of education and investigative podcasts, you might find yourself running against the clock again.

Determine what’s normal for your podcast format and what your topic will demand. While you consider the other line items on this list, you’ll hopefully come to an accurate time estimate!

Audience Habits

Next, consider what your target audience is used to. Does your niche normally listen to longer episodes? Do they generally listen to podcasts on social media or on a dedicated streaming app? This is good to know! A news commentary or true crime podcast listener is used to a longer show than someone looking for celebrity gossip on the Facebook video page.

Do some research and explore your ideal community and understand what they’ve already accepted. You should try to stay within the normal time range your niche is used to.

Production Demands

What level of production does your podcast require? And how fast? For instance, a fiction podcast like Bone. Marry. Bury is going to require more production than an off-the-cuff vlog style show. However, you can record episodes of a fiction podcast in-advance, whereas a daily news podcast has to be fresh every day.

So, when you’re deciding on the length of your podcast, the demand of production MUST play a big part. If you don’t take this into consideration, you’ll find that your publishing schedule is totally burning you out. Ask yourself what’s practical, and reduce the length if the level of production is too much for your posting schedule.

Posting Schedule

Speaking of a posting schedule, how frequently are you planning on posting? Many podcasts are uploaded on a weekly basis. These podcasts are the ones that are generally 30 minutes or more. However, daily podcasts like Good Instincts run shorter episodes around 10-15 minutes, so they’re listeners don’t get content fatigue and so they, themselves, don’t get burned out by the demand.

Consistency

It’s important for your podcast to be consistent. The average podcast episode length for your whole catalog should be about the same. This way, listeners know what to expect and don’t feel cheated by something a fraction of the length or overwhelmed by something double the usual runtime.

Consider your topic and production demand and determine what makes the most sense. Then, try to fill up that time slot each day. If you’re a pop culture podcast like Not Skinny, But Not Fat or the Good Guys, you might find some topics take way less time to cover than others. When this happens, find more things to discuss that fit into the episode theme to keep the same length.

Keeping consistent episode lengths and a regular posting schedule has been shown to really help your podcast grow! This is what listeners are demanding from a high quality podcast, so don’t pass off this consideration too quickly. Every good podcast episode should have a similar runtime.

Ability

Lastly, what are your own limitations? Are you working a regular job while you record your podcast? Do you have unreliable equipment or guests? Or, are you just super nervous to take the plunge and stay self-disciplined with a weekly podcast?

The point is, don’t bite off more than you can chew. No matter the average length of your podcast type, your audience demands, or your production demands, record what you know is possible for you. This will ensure you can stay consistent, that you don’t lose motivation, and that you produce a quality product every time.

Your podcast should be between 15-90 minutes long based on your topics and limitations.

Your podcast should be between 15-90 minutes long based on your topics and limitations.

How To Leave Work At Work?

When you spend so many hours focusing on work, it’s hard to go home and push it all out of your mind. Pressing pause on your work to enjoy your personal life isn’t something that comes easily to everyone, especially in certain industries and working environments.

However, over 90% of people say they work over 50 hours a week, and most of them said they had poor work-life balance due to personal perfectionism, company culture, workload, or pressure from supervisors. Sure, you might be bringing in the big bucks, but working like this leads to burnout—plus, dissatisfaction at work AND home.

So, how do you stop it? What’s the key to setting boundaries but still being productive? That’s what we’re discussing today. Learn how to leave work at work and reclaim your home life below:

List of ways you can leave work at work

How To Leave Work At Work?

Keep your personal phone personal.

One of the hardest parts about maintaining work-life balance is the constant cell phone notifications. It starts small with a quick text or an email, and suddenly it becomes an expectation that you drop everything day or night to answer the phone and solve the problem.

This not only means work spills into your personal life, but it totally invades your social life! You start dreading doing anything on your own cell phone. Without your phone, you may start isolating from people and missing out on updates and opportunities to connect.

Respectfully, keep your phone for personal use only. Don’t link your work emails to your phone app and don’t give clients or co-workers your personal number. If you have to maintain some type of work communications on your phone, try using a third party app that you can snooze when you’re not at work.

Be productive at work and write down your accomplishments.

If you’re one of those people that feels like there just isn’t enough time in the day to get everything done, consider trying out some productivity hacks that can help you work smarter, not harder. There are lots of ways to maximize your time, stop procrastinating, and achieve more in your day

Things like time-batching, setting goals, and limiting distractions can really help you get important work done and get home on time. The Career Contessa has lots of great content on this, but this episode called “How to Be Productive By Harnessing Motivation” is a great place to start.

However, if you’re a part of that nearly 40% of workaholics that say their perfectionism is what keeps them working away well past clock out, you should take a different approach. Writing down each task you complete will help you fight that part of your brain that says you didn’t do enough. You can read more about how to identify and tackle toxic productivity HERE.

Tell your roommate or partner when to expect you home.

Next, you need an accountability partner. Creating good work-life balance means not only leaving work at work, but leaving work when you’re supposed to. It’s so easy to work just a few more minutes and then those few more minutes turn into a few more hours and, before you know it, you’ve skipped dinner, missed the new episode of your favorite show, and the only words you said to friends and family are “gonna be late.”

To help combat that, tell your roommate or partner (whoever you live with) what time they can expect you home every day. Not only will this give you your personal time that you so desperately need to decompress and recharge, but it’ll also make you more productive during the day. That end time will act as a daily deadline that’ll motivate you to stay focused and get your work done more efficiently.

Decompress with a podcast.

Speaking of decompressing . . . We’ve discussed how you need to physically leave the office to leave work at work. However, mentally leaving work at work is just as important. To do this, you need a daily habit that takes your brain from work to home.

Your commute home is the perfect time to make this transition, as you’re physically travelling from one place to another. Listening to podcasts is our favorite decompression tool! You can turn on an episode and be transported into another world or topic that occupies your mind with something other than your mounting to-do list. By the time you get home, your mind is pondering podcast episodes instead of projects!

You can browse Dear Media’s list of shows and find something that really connects with you. We’ve got topics covering everything from mental health and parenting to relationships and finances. If you work from home or need more ways to decompress, check out this list. And, to learn more about the importance of separating work and life, read this post

Good Morning Routine for Mental Health

No matter your mental health state, you can benefit from a good morning routine. Whether you’re just looking to reduce a little stress or you’re trying to overcome debilitating depression and anxiety, an intentional morning can be super healthy. It sets the rest of the day up for success and helps you control your mood, productivity, and more!

Before you dismiss the idea of adding ANOTHER thing to your plate, understand a healthy morning routine doesn’t have to take more than 15 minutes! It can be as short or as long as you want, because a successful morning routine is all about what you do, rather than how long you do it.

So, today we’re giving you an outline to start your own morning routine. Try this as a first step towards a more mindful and positive day:

Good Morning Routine for Mental Health

Let the light in.

If you can start your day basking in natural light, do it! It can reduce stress, fight off depression, and even help you sleep better at night. However, if you wake up too early in the morning to throw open those curtains and see the sun, consider getting a light therapy lamp. It can help charge you up for the morning and get you moving, and it’s even been found to combat seasonal affective disorder!

Avoid technology.

When your alarm clock goes off, DO NOT reach for your phone. It’s tempting to scroll through social media, check the news, or get started answering emails right away, but that’s not good for you! In fact, it has been shown to increase stress and make you less productive during the day. Instead, begin your day doing something meaningful and keep that phone on the nightstand a little longer!

Drink a glass of water.

We know . . . your morning habit right now is grabbing that cup of coffee. However, hold off on that morning joe for just a little while longer. Instead, drink a glass of water! (You could always dress it up with a lemon or lime wedge if you want a little more flavor.)

A glass of water in the morning improves metabolism, promotes healthy hair and skin, relieves heartburn and indigestion, and strengthens your immune system. It’s like giving your body the fuel it needs for the day! (It wasn’t caffeine that you needed after all!)

Plan your day.

If your morning is spent rushing around and flying into work, it’s easy to stay anxious and scattered throughout the rest of the day. When you do this, it’s hard to prioritize tasks and focus. At the end of the day, you’re left feeling unfulfilled and stressed. Instead, start planning out your day in the morning. This will help prime you for a productive day!

A bulleted list of items that make for a good morning routine for mental health

Exercise.

Time to get that blood flowing! Morning workouts can help with focus, metabolism, sleep, mood, appetite control, and energy. Don’t think you need to drive to a gym and pump iron for an hour either, you can begin your day with just a few minute workout to start, and then increase it as you see fit.

Try yoga, slow-weighted workouts, or a brisk run! (You can learn about other fitness trends to try in this episode of The Art of Being Well. And, if you want some wisdom from an amazing plus-size fitness expert, check out THIS Papaya Podcast episode!)

Eat a healthy breakfast.

We’ve always been told breakfast is the most important meal of the day, yet for so many of us, eating breakfast is snatching up a donut or bagel on your coffee run. A healthy breakfast can help boost energy and concentration right off the bat. Plus, it helps you keep your weight and appetite under control with fewer blood sugar swings. (Learn about more healthy food habits here with the Food Heaven podcast.)

Journal.

Journaling also has mental health benefits! It can help you manage anxiety, reduce stress, and cope with depression. You can journal about your day, write out positive affirmations, or note things you’re grateful for. Hopefully, after journaling, you have a naturally more positive and grateful attitude to carry with you through the whole day.

For journal help, The Dream Bigger Podcast has you covered. The episode titled “A 101 Guide on Journaling, Using Journaling for Manifestation, Journaling Prompts, and More” has the 411 on ALL things journaling. With the podcast host’s help, you’ll have plenty of tools to get your writing!

Meditate and practice deep breathing.

Finally, complete your morning routine with mediation with deep breaths. The process is great for handling anxiety and sets the tone for how you’ll respond to stressful situations you encounter. It can help you release negative emotions, lower blood pressure, focus on the present, and increase creativity! It’s the perfect way to prepare yourself for the chaos of the day.

For the best mediations, listen to the Mind. Body. No Soul podcast. Every week, you’ll be given a guided meditation that’s super approachable, even if you’re not a spiritual person. And, if you binge all that and still need more mediations, Dear Gabby has you covered with her own episode on guided meditations! Check it out!

15 Podcast Website Examples

People usually listen to podcasts on one of the big audio streaming platforms. Spotify, iHeartRadio, and Apple Podcasts are all popular spots to house a podcast. But, one place people don’t often listen to the latest episodes is on a podcast website! However, having a podcast website is still an important part of building a successful show.

Why, though? What is the purpose of a podcast website when there are SO many other places for your podcast to live. Today, we’ll explore all things podcast websites. We’ll discuss why they’re important and show you some great examples to draw inspiration from. Let’s get into it:

15 Podcast Website Examples

What is a Podcast Website?

A podcast website is a place for your entire podcast catalog to live. It’s a sort of homebase for your brand! It may include just your podcast archives, but many also have episode transcripts, blogs, digital content, and even merch catalogs! The website is where you can really connect with your loyal followers and bring in new ones.

Podcast websites are important, because it ensures your content is always backed-up and accessible. But, most importantly, a website optimizes your podcasts for search engines. When your website is search engine optimized (SEO) it’s more likely to draw in organic visitors!

If someone searches a topic you’ve covered in a podcast, it’s unlikely to show up on the search engine results pages (SERP) if the episode is only on one of the big podcast platforms. However, if it’s transcribed and part of a website, it could populate at the top of the SERPs in no time! New users will travel to your site, explore, and become new loyal listeners.

Lastly, podcast websites also provide a monetization opportunity. Of course, you could sell ad space on your website, but you could also sell digital products, merch, courses, consults, and event tickets! Your website can be the key to unlocking your true podcast earning potential.

We know what you’re thinking, “This wasn’t part of my business plan!” Don’t worry, you don’t have to reinvent the wheel to create a great podcast website. Below are 16 podcast website examples to inspire your own site:

Dear Gabby

Gabby Bernstein of the Dear Gabby podcast uses her website to promote her podcast and her brand overall. You can find her entire catalog of podcasts, and each episode has a dedicated written summary and a spot to put a future transcript. The summary is super SEO-friendly and will do a lot to promote your podcast! She also has free resources, books, and event listings to provide her listeners with tons of additional content.

Recovering from Reality

The Recovering from Reality podcast website highlights the latest podcast episodes and Alexis Haine’s newly released blog posts. For each podcast, she has a written hook, so organic searchers and long-time followers can find the perfect episode for them. Her website matches her podcast branding and includes courses, books, and merch to purchase for extra monetization opportunities!

The Blonde Files

Arielle Lorre’s website focuses on her name and overall brand, rather than on her podcast exclusively. This allows her to showcase all parts of her business and unlock a greater earning potential. However, her podcast is a HUGE part of her website. She has each podcast listed with a brief summary and all her affiliate links from the episode. Another big monetization opportunity there!

The Bitch Bible

The Bitch Bible has a really simple website that acts almost like a well-designed link tree. The podcast button sends you to Apple Podcasts. The shop icon sends users to the merch store site. And, the events tab takes you to the Live Nation website with all her tour dates! Each link takes you directly where you need to be to get Jackie Schimmel’s content. It doesn’t do a lot for SEO, but it tells fans where to get more Bitch Bible!

Food Heaven

A food podcast must have a place to store all its recipes! Food Heaven Made Easy’s website has recipes, a blog, and all their past podcast episodes. It’s a treasure trove of SEO content, with lots of opportunities to reach an organic audience looking for great recipes or cooking know-how.

Nicole Walters

Nicole Walters is much bigger than just her podcast! However, without a website, her listeners may not know that. Her website shows all the ways she helps her followers get their head in the game. She has tons of courses in addition to her podcast episodes. And, all those episodes are totally transcribed for maximum SEO benefit!

Real Pod

Victoria Garrick of Real Pod uses her website to market her overall brand. She doesn’t store her podcast on her website and there is no available audio player, however, she has links to both Apple Podcast and Spotify to listen in. She also highlights guests she’s had in past episodes as well as her speaking gigs!

One unique feature of her website is her “recommendations” section. There, she tells followers about her favorite self-help books and wellness Instagram influencers! It’s a cool way to connect with your listeners and show them you care about them.

The Art of Being Well

Dr. Will Cole is a natural healthcare practitioner who uses his podcast to reach the masses. He has a beautiful website that showcases his mission of natural healing. There’s a post for each podcast episode that has an integrated audio player and episode summary. Since he does so much more than just “The Art of Being Well” podcast, his home page highlights his consults, health guides, books, quizzes, shop, and more! This site is jam packed with great resources.

Freckled Foodie

Freckled Foodie & Friends has an aesthetically pleasing website with a color scheme that matches the podcast cover image. On her website, she has her full podcast directory organized by topic, which is very user friendly! The latest episodes and recipes are right there on the homepage too, making everything really accessible for her eager followers.

The Papaya Podcast

This website has fantastic web design from both a user-friendly standpoint and an aesthetic perspective! The Birds Papaya has crisp feminine colors that really grab a listener’s attention when they travel to the site. It showcases both the blog and podcast sides of this brand. You could spend all day reading blog posts and listening to episodes on the podcast player!

Trading Secrets

Jason Tartick knows his audience! He’s all about teaching his listeners about financial literacy and money strategy, so right on his homepage he has stock ticker scrolling across the top. He has a modern black and white color scheme that reinforces his professional vibe. AND, he continues illustrating his credibility and professionalism by giving a short resume and highlighting his book release on the home page.

His podcast “Trading Secrets” is a video podcast, so he has short clips of his show on the site, but otherwise he just provides links to watch or listen elsewhere! The website includes courses for listeners looking to dive deeper into the strategies expressed on “Trading Secrets.”

The Skinny Confidential Him & Her

The Skinny Confidential CEO Lauryn Bosstick actually has two podcasts produced by Dear Media: Him & Her and Get the F*ck Out of the Sun. Both podcasts and her website promote her larger lifestyle brand, which includes a blog, a shop, an affiliate marketing page, a YouTube channel, and even a collection of recipes!

The Career Contessa Podcast

The Career Contessa website design does SEO right! This website is well optimized for search engines, because the podcast pages include summaries, quality images, podcast players, AND full episode transcripts. We also love how the episodes are well-organized and the page has links to each podcast platform. It’s really user-friendly!

The site also provides a slew of additional resources discussed in the podcast. Digital content, blog posts, webinars, videos, books, newsletters, coaching, and more are all available on the site. And, since the website has the opportunity to bring in a lot of organic visitors, the extra content can promote the podcast and the podcast can promote the extra content. Win-win!

With Whit

Whitney Port’s website is super simple and acts as just a podcast hosting site. It’s branded, of course, and includes her podcast audio player right at the top of the screen. It plays the most recent episode automatically. To find more podcasts, you select the latest episode and can switch through in order or travel to the other podcast hosting platforms. It’s simple, but effective!

Soul on Fire

Soul on Fire is a podcast from The Balanced Blonde brand. The website emphasizes the spiritual nature of the podcast. As you scroll down, you see the latest blog posts and then a little lower is the podcast. As you keep going, you’ll find courses, books, merch, affiliate products, and digital downloads! This scroll-through style is really user-friendly, especially for mobile devices!

How to Decompress After Work

No matter the job you have, there is a level of pressure, stress, and burnout you carry with you from time to time. This doesn’t mean your job is bad, either! Even when you do meaningful work that you care about, it’s hard to leave work at work. Instead, you may accidentally you’ll bring parts of your job home with you, contributing to anxiety, sleeplessness, and mood swings.

In a positive work environment, usually the issue is a poor work-life balance. You’ve heard this before, but essentially it means you need to take more time to invest in your social life, hobbies, and wellness. Instead of doing those things after work, you’re jumping straight into housework, important phone calls, and heading to other commitments.

How do you stop the madness?!?! Well, decompressing after work is a great place to start! So, our post today is all about why it’s important to unwind after a hard day’s work. We’ll also share some easy ways to schedule in that relaxation after you clock out. Let’s do it:

How to Decompress After Work

Why is it important to unwind after work?

When you go from work right into a long to-do list, your body doesn’t really realize you’ve ever stopped working. Your stress levels don’t have time to regulate! So, after an exhausting day at work, you’re left feeling overwhelmed and unhappy—even when you’re out of the office and doing something as simple as laundry!

The anxiety you feel means you’re not present with your loved ones and you’re not investing positively in your physical and mental health. This is a big problem! And, it can be even worse if you work from home when your two worlds are so interconnected. In the long run, this can make you hate your job, and it can even worsen parts of your personal life.

The solution is simple. Your body needs time to release the tension by decompressing after work. When you do this, you create a clear distinction from where your job lives to where YOU live. If you do this, you won’t gain resentment for your job and your home will remain a sanctuary. It’s the perfect balance!

So, take time directly after work to do some quiet self-care. (Learn more about self-care here with the hosts of Being Bumo!) Cut through all the noise, and for just 10-60 minutes engage in little pleasures and healthy habits that make you happy. They don’t have to be productive. They don’t have to involve anyone else. And they certainly don’t have to be expensive. Do something just for you! Here are some great ideas:

10 Great Ways to Unwind After Work

Binge a podcast.

Do you have a commute home after work? This is the perfect time to unwind! Instead of clicking endlessly through the radio stations and thinking about what you have to do at work tomorrow, listen to a podcast!

You’ll get lost in the engaging episodes and totally release whatever you had going on at work. When you arrive home, you’ll be excited to ponder the podcast and NOT jump back into work stress. You could even continue binging the podcast as you get home and start cooking dinner or doing housework.

Not only are podcasts a great way to decompress after work, but they’re also the perfect way to invest in yourself, learn something new, or better your mental health. Here are some short podcasts you can binge after work:

+ The Dog that Changed Me

+ Get the F*ck Out of the Sun

+ Summer of Gold

+ Bone Marry Bury

Get crafty.

Getting in touch with your crafty side is another productive way to unwind after work. Being creative will help you exercise a different part of your brain, and it’s proven to help you destress. Crafting leaves you feeling more confident and totally fulfilled!

Just don’t put any expectations on it. Don’t worry about how your craft looks as a finished project—this is all just for fun! If you want to learn more about the benefits of crafting, listen to the episode of Caviar Dreams, Tuna Fish Budget called Crafty AF

Meditate.

Everyone knows meditating helps reduce stress levels, but so few of us actually do it! We don’t like to slow down long enough to do this mindful self-care practice. But, you have to be willing to take a timeout and invest in your mental health if you really want to make a change in your work-life balance.

We get that it’s hard! So, take a super approachable path to mediation with Jackie Schimmel on her podcast Mind Body No Soul. You can also check out the Dear Gabby episode 5 Minute Guided Meditation that Will Change Your Life. Both hosts will lead you through each mediation until you get your flow.

Read a book.

Another great way to relax after work is by reading a book. There are so many benefits to reading books, including improved concentration, vocabulary, sleep, and just general knowledge of the world. And, reading reduces stress too!

If you need a little motivation, read along with the Readheads Book Club. It’s a podcast-style book club where you can join in on the discussion and hear all about what the podcast hosts think of the story too. Or, if you just want some motivation to start reading, listen to ILYSM’s episode called How I Read 100+ Books in One Year

Listening to music while you read can help you create an immersive experience too. Sitting down with a book and a great playlist after work is the perfect way to reset, relax, and refocus on life outside of work.

Practice deep breathing.

Maybe you’re feeling like you just don’t have a lot of time for a lengthy decompression activity. That’s totally valid! When you have time for nothing else, just practice deep breathing. The Heal Podcast discusses the power of breathwork in this episode—and, spoiler alert, this simple practice packs some serious benefits!

In addition to relieving stress, deep breathing can reduce pain, stimulate detoxification, benefit immunity, increase energy, and even make your posture better. So, after work, close your eyes and take some deep breaths. It’s the least you can do for yourself.

Ways to unwind after work

Watch a little TV.

After a long day of productivity, there is no reason you can’t do something that’s just plain fun. Watching TV is relaxing and definitely decompressing, so pull up Netflix and watch an episode or two. (Just don’t get hooked and binge all night.) If you want some great recommendations, listen to the podcast Best of Both (formerly called The Snatchelor.)

Journal about your day and feelings.

Journaling is like meditation. We know it’s good for us, but so few of us actually do it! Practicing gratitude specifically while you journal can help you achieve a more positive outlook on your work and home life, which gives you deeper contentment and appreciation for your life. What better way to decompress?

For more ways to journal, listen to the episode of The Dream Bigger Podcast called “A 101 Guide on Journaling, Using Journaling for Manifestation, Journaling Prompts, and More,” It’s a great way to get started! And, if you want to listen to someone else’s journal, listen to the MOOD podcast where Lauren Elizabeth shares her daily feelings in an honest and hilarious way!

Cook or bake something fun.

You’ve got to make dinner, anyway. Why not make it an event? After a stressful day, pick out a fun recipe to try! Cooking not only saves money, but it engages all your senses in a way that brings you to the present and delivers all the good vibes! Find a great recipe on Food Heaven or What’s Gaby Cooking . . . in Quarantine? They’re both relatable food podcasts that give you more than just a dinner menu. You’ll love it.

Get moving.

If you really want to feel good, moving your body is a must. Whether you go on a walk, do a little yoga, or dance it out, moving your body is a productive way to shake out the stress, unwind, and prepare for a night away from work. For ideas on how to exercise, listen to this episode of The Art of Being Well where Dr. Will Cole discusses the latest wellness trends.

Have a glass of wine.

What’s the age-old unwinding tool? WINE! Having a glass of wine after work definitely signals to your brain that the long day is over. You could even enjoy your wine while doing another practice on this list, like listening to the Wine Face podcast.
